Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.
An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? It’s not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, it’s that most of us don’t have a way to do laundry in our own home.
Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We don’t hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I can’t eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I don’t have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.
What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, it’s that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.
Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. It’s not that you hate theme parks, it’s not like you’ve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. It’s just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.
I am glad this has made the rounds. Some people feel a dense misunderstanding or misinterpretation concerning gentrification, and I think it helps to hear a description/explanation of what gentrification is from those who are both affected by it and educated by the culture from which it hails. I and many others enjoy some of the delights of gentrification while simultaneously having their livelihoods threatened by it.
Back to my OG fantasy obsession . . . Dragons 🥰 (but obviously still WangXian, I’m not insane, I swear)
saw this cute pic of a raven making a heart, had to draw crowxian
(also a little extra of crowxian getting some cute aggression and having to nom on his shidi)
Before you are two magic buttons. Button A: you will never have to clean your kitchen again (dishes are automatically done; floor swept and mopped; etc). Button B: you will never have to clean your bathroom again (toilet & sink & tub/shower cleaned and sanitized; etc) Which button do you push?

If anyone wants to know what a leopard seal sounds like 🦷🩸
Leopard Seals are what happens when god needs a lizard and all he has is a mammal
leopard seal topic activated; i am so sorry to my long time followers who have seen me do this like ten times but i just can't help myself
OH MY GOD
That is a monster (respectful) If it was a lizard it would be a dragon.
They can be bigger than the biggest grizzly bears. They are about the size of a horse, just without the stilt legs. And their faces are hiding teeth like this (sorry it's kind of gross but it shows the teeth best)
Here's a leopard seal skull next to a horse skull
they can get as big as 12 feet and can weigh like 1,200 pounds. They can swim 35 miles an hour and eat only meat - regularly eating giant penguins that weigh more than 100 pounds each, and anything else they feel like they can kill. And they're pretty smart. Only an Orca is a more dangerous hunter in arctic waters, and even they usually leave a leopard seal alone.
A seal's closest land relative is a bear, and leopard seals will regularly hunt other seals, making this a bear that eats bears, but built for the ocean. You know, the terrifying ocean? A bear that lives there that eats the other bears that live there.
Leopard seals also sing to attract a mate.
Their diet is mostly krill, though yes they do eat penguins and other seals, which is why their teeth are like that, to filter the krill from the sea water.
Because they have no shearing teeth, leopard seals have to thrash their larger prey against the water in the same way that crocodilians do in order to tear off swallowable chunks.
Unlike most predators (including bears), leopard seals are curious about humans and, if you don't panic and act like prey when they approach, they'll switch from aggression to 'wtf even are you?' investigative behavior.
At least one leopard seal was observed seeming to mourn her dead pup.
While some leopard seals have been kept in captivity after being rescued from dangerous circumstances (and unable to be released for fear of possibly introducing illness into the wild population), like great white sharks they don't do well in captivity and have a shorter life span than their wild counterparts.
There has been a single human fatality from a leopard seal attack. Kirsty Brown, a researcher. It is believed that, due to her petite size, she was mistaken for a smaller prey seal.
It was also reported by the witnesses that the seal that killed Kirsty was 15 feet in length but there is no proof or confirmation of that so put it in the 'grain of salt' box.
Leopard seals are smart enough to be trained and clever enough to be stubborn about performing actions they have been trained to do.
Leopard seals are difficult for researchers to locate, can be very dangerous and aggressive if you eff up or catch them in a bad mood, and thus are difficult to study so we don't know nearly enough about them.
But they're awesome and are my favorite seal.
[Video description: Gritty is turning the crank on a flagpole to raise the Progress Pride Flag. He gesticulates angrily that the flag is not blowing in the wind, then gestures offscreen. The flag begins blowing. As Gritty begins raising the flag more, the camera pans out to show a man in a suit and sunglasses, looking like a stern Secret Service agent, is holding a leafblower that points at the flag. End description.]

Geological horror. You find a geode and crack it open and the crystal lining its walls is human blood that can't be genetically matched to anyone. You find a human skeleton but every one of the bones is made from rock, a rock that you know can't be whittled into those shapes. You find layers of clay and loam that sport ancient fossils at the top and the still-rotting corpses of modern animals at the bottom.
This reminds me of the blood river in Antarctica. For like a century scientists had no clue why this river looked like, acted like, and felt exactly like blood. Turns out it’s just really high in iron.
"Blood River in Antartica" yeah right there's no way a river looks like bl-
...nevermind
Blood Falls isn't just high in iron, it's the byproducts of extremophile bacteria that have been isolated under a glacier in a iron- and sulfur-rich anoxic brine for the past 5 million years.
