Scream and shhhhh....

I think the contrast between the way Harry frames Medicine and If I Could Fly is significant. They are just two of the songs on his 17-song setlist, but they have captured the attention of the fans and even the press (wherever the coverage my go from here). He must know exactly what the discussion has been around the meaning of Medicine. There are pages of headlines about it if you Google search it, for goodness sake - let alone the enormous amount of fandom reaction on social media - and yet he is saying “you may know the words” ?? You think, Harry? And he teases it further by saying “…some of you might not have heard this before, but if you happen to know the words…” Oh, we happen to know the words, alright. We have been scrutinising them closely (again, dozens of press articles). And if we do just happen to know the words? “please feel free to scream them at the top of your lungs”. We are free to scream them. Permission granted. And everyone does, including Harry (and his annunciation gets clearer too).

And then, on the B stage, a totally different tone. As a lone singer with his guitar, a pride flag hanging from his mic stand, he delivers a quiet, almost tremulous rendition of IICF, with it’s movingly altered notes, and when the fans scream into the pause he takes, he tells them ‘shhhhhh…shhhhhh”, he gestures with his hand…be quiet here, listen. x

He knows, too, how the crowd interprets this song, what it is about, who he wrote it for. That interpretation has been discussed by his fans for years, ever since we first heard it, ever since the response to the MITAM listening party.  

Whoever has whatever control over the various elements of Harry’s tour - the flags and suits and setlists - these artistic choices, in the moment, are Harry’s, and they do not happen in a vacuum. 

I think they are significant. I am listening.
