I often see artists talking about how they feel guilty for “slacking off” by using tools and techniques that save time, especially when it comes to colouring and finishing, and there are a couple of big problems with that:

1. A more labour-intensive tool or technique doesn’t necessarily produce an objectively superior result. Sometimes the output of the easier technique is just as good. Hell, sometimes it’s better. Certainly, worthwhile art takes a whole lot of work, but the notion that a given work of art is superior because it was a huge pain in ass to produce is the value system of rich assholes who get off on the idea of people toiling for their pleasure. Don’t internalise it.

2. Even if the output of the easier technique isn’t quite as good in isolation, the time and effort you save by using it doesn’t just vanish. If, for example, you’ve got a colouring technique that’s 80% as good and takes 1/5th as long to do, that time savings will almost certainly improve other aspects of the work – either because you’re not being forced to skimp elsewhere in order to make time for the colouring, or simply because there’s less need to run yourself ragged to hit your deadlines, leading to fewer fatigue-induced fuckups.

The paradox of perfectionism is that pouring your heart and soul into every tiny little detail usually results in an inferior end product than if you’d just let things ride. Feeling guilty about using labour-saving tools and techniques in your art isn’t just it’s harmful to your emotional health, it’s based on a misunderstanding of why those tools exist: very often, slacking off results in better art.

Redesigning and restyling the PPG is always really fun. I actually do a new iteration once every few years as a design challenge to myself. This time I focused on the fact that they’re ‘casual superheroes’ with no secret identity, and tried to give them a sleek, cohesive, modern look that has a simple yet visually distinct quick-change from civilian mode to kick-butt mode. I’m very into minute variations in uniforms, too. I’m especially proud of the solution I came up with for how the girls would individually style their hair so it doesn’t get in their faces during fights.
