independent, selective, mutuals only roleplay blog for avatar aang from the franchise of avatar: the last airbender. originally established in 2020 as @twinkltoes. beloved by rune.
based on: the 2005 cartoon, the comics (somewhat) and the 2026 avatar aang movie. non-affiliated with any of the live-action adaptations or legend of korra series. AU, OC & very crossover friendly.
this is also a sideblog! all follows, likes & asks will come from my hub blog @novanovellas. (you don't need to be following it to interact with this one!)
personals / non-roleplay blogs: this is not a fandom blog. please do not reblog my posts, or you will be blocked. you can like my posts and send asks if you want, but i don't want my stuff being shared outside RP spaces.
⚠️ all my blogs support dead-dove and are 21+, i do not consent to interacting with minors! ⚠️
[ general rules. ][ headcanons. ][ character studies. ][ muse playlist. ]
following themes of. . . insurmountable grief & the affects of genocide, children of war, ptsd & survivors guilt, found family, healing from ancient wounds, forgiveness & preservation, all life is sacred, the way is to be whimsy, & holding onto joy & spiritual values.
aang's main-canon universe will be broken up into three parts.
verse one: pre ~ during the events of the 2005 show (age 13-14)
verse two: during events of the comics ~ late adolescence (age 15-19)
verse three: early-adulthood ~ before/during/after events of the 2026 movie (age 20-30)
i will default to writing verse three or late verse two as i prefer to write adult muses, but am always open to entertaining verse one as flashbacks / alternative plots.
i haven't seen korra, not sure if/when i will. i'm open to interacting with korra muses, i'll just need some context. (fair warning that I'm a bit picky about continuity stuff so if I turn something down, I promise it's nothing personal.)
on ships: kataang is my otp and will usually default to canon, but there is no pressure for katara rpers to do the same! i'm happy to have them remain besties ♡ (in verses where he isn't dating katara, he will just see her platonically!) i'm also very open-minded to shipping and would love the chance to explore other pairings with aang.
regarding nsfw: it's not really a priority for me, but if it does come up it'll be thrown under a read-more and tagged as 'usft cw' or 'suggestive cw'. for obvious reasons, anything nsfw related will be kept strictly to verse three. (i don't know if i see myself writing full on smut, but i may post headcanons / rb art, and be open to discussing stuff in DMs.)
duplicates: i'm usually very duplicate friendly and love duplicate interactions, but i do need time to build up confidence in my own portrayal of a muse first. for that reason, i'll be avoiding following duplicates back for the time being as i am still dusting off the old headcanons.
i won't be putting up with any character hate / slander. this goes as a general thing for all the characters but especially in aang's case. people are free to dislike him as a character, but i don't really see any reason for us to interact if that's the case.
Name: Avatar Aang.
Age: Verse dependent.
Gender: Unspokenly Genderflux / Genderfluid.
Pronouns: He/Him mostly, but sometimes She/Her or They/Them.
Sexuality: Pan.
Species: Human.
Race: Air nomad / Air Nation.
Morality: Chaotic good pacifist.
Appearance: Resembles the visage of someone Southeastern Asian / Tibetan. Fair skin & rounded features with dark eyes and a shaved head, has light blue arrow tattoos decorating his body. Muscular and lean, short as a kid — full grown he stands at 6’3’’.
Clothes: Typically wears orange, yellow and red colored robes that resemble the likeness of Tibetan & Buddhist monks with accenting wooden prayer beads, disks and tassels.
Personality: Fun-loving, joyful, and a bit of an air-head (no pun intended.) Aang is generally a kind and warm person who wishes to live his life care-free. He can be a bit of a recluse sometimes, getting easily fixated on things important to him.
Being the last of the air-nomads while simultaneously the current Avatar, he often finds himself caught in a bind between having to utilize his abilities to maintain balance over the other nations and being the only person that can keep the air bender values alive.
As a pacifist, Aang will always look for ways to settle conflicts peacefully and refuses to kill. He can be a little hot-headed and impulsive sometimes under certain circumstances, though generally maintains a level-mind in most situations. If pushed too far, he can come dangerously close to breaking his pacifistic oath.
Aang didn’t know his parents, his upbringing was very much it takes a village at the Southern Air Temple — though the closest thing to a father figure he had would be his mentor Monk Gyatso.
As a young child he was inherently gifted at airbending, quickly surpassing other children his age in the art, being the youngest airbender to ever receive the ceremonial tattoos resembling his mastery over the element. He didn’t know he was the next avatar until it was brought to his attention by higher ranking monks, a premature revaluation forced into action by the threat of the Fire Nation on the horizon. At first, he didn’t know what to really think of it. But quickly he began to view this status as a bad thing, when the other airbender children stopped including him in games with the argument it wouldn’t be fair anymore. Saddened over this, Aang spent most of his final days solemnly training with his mentor, Monk Gyatso, who did his best to shield the child from the harsh reality being the next avatar would bring.
With the rising Fire Nation threat, the elders condemned Gyatso for shielding Aang and ordered him to be separated from his mentor and sent to another temple to train where he would be kept in secrecy and free of any sentimental distractions. Having overheard this, Aang was frightened and confused, so he left a note for his mentor before leaving the Southern Air Temple on his bison Appa. Had he only stayed, he might of left with Gyatso at his side. This event would lead to Aang being caught in a treacherous storm in southern hemisphere waters, where he would nearly drown if not for his avatar state activating prematurely and sealing him and his bison away in the ice.
For a hundred years, the avatar lay dormant while the rest of the world suffered at the hands of the hands of the Fire Nation, with the Air Nomads disappearing in an unspeakable complete genocide. He would awake in the arms of a water tribe girl, with her brother hovering over her shoulder. The three would go on to become world-renown heroes alongside some friends made along the way, ending the hundred year war and the Fire Nation’s oppressive regime and begin restoring balance to the four… three nations.
She squinted her sightless eyes to the ground. That didn't answer anything . ❝ Got it. Eating bugs when no one is watching. I see . It does give enough proteins , if you eat a lot. ❞
❝ I have questions && i wont shut about it. How the heck twinkle toes get beefy , when the only thing he eats is leaves && grass. What kind of avatar mumbo jumbo is that. ❞
"i couldn't really sleep either," she says with a shake of her head as she comes up behind him, looping one arm around his waist as the other lays on him diagonally so she can place a hand over his heart. katara had done her best to blink herself awake once she she couldn't feel his warmth beside her on the bed anymore; it wasn't true that something was keeping her up, too. but she hates to keep aang alone with his thoughts late at night and she knows she can deal with whatever drowsiness would seep into her later in the day.
softly, she asks, "did you dream about the storm again?"
His sleep depravity wants to object, though feeling his wife's weight lean against him instinctively made the Avatar relax. He couldn't ever stay tense when Katara was there, she had been there every step of the way since the day he woke from that iceberg. Naturally, it was comforting. Hands rising to clasp hers, Aang lets his eyes fall shut as he stands like that for a moment, just drinking in the waterbender's warmth and leaning into her embrace. It was almost enough to make him forget the dreamscape visions that had chased him awake in the first place.
❝ ..I think so? ❞ after a moment, the airbender quietly responds, his eyes cracking open again to stare out over the city. When he thinks back to what woke him, all Aang can really remember is the taste of freezing salt water in his mouth, and his tendons alit with electricity. ❝ I don't know, it's.. blurry. This one was just a bunch of feelings. ❞
❝ You know, if you put in a different variation of your name, you get a different result... ❞ He took the quiz again, and well. We'll just stick to the first one.
@fiheir said ; The fire nation doesn't want her. Despite being the oldest, due to his empathic heart, Zuko was considered the weak link, the heir only by pecking order. Her death brought many of her father's loyalists a sigh of relief. Azula was just like Ozai and her reign would be as glorious and violent as his. Zee tells herself that it's for the best that she's dead and forgotten, but... But Azula, ever so slowly changing for the better under the guidance of their uncle can't teach the avatar firebending, a skill he needs while also pretending to be Ozai's ever loyal right hand.
Zee didn't plan on becoming the avatar's teacher either, but as a wayward ambush led to Zee using bending techniques to prevent the avatar from getting roasted alive, the avatar has been following her around like a lost puppy, repeatedly requesting lessons. Metal fan softly taps against Aang's chest as she emits a heavy sigh. It seems Aang has finally worn her down. "Fine. I'll teach you firebending. But no questions about my past. I left the fire nation for a reason." (Kyoshi AU <3)
a warrior of kyoshi.
❝ You WILL? GREAT!! ❞ cue the young Avatar giving a little cheer, his fist in the air as he leapt like ten feet. Finally, he could learn firebending! This was so exciting, it meant he was one step closer to actualizing his destiny! Aang always thought the firebenders of the west were just so cool... and now he gets to learn too!! The irony in this, the avatar had no idea just who was going to teach him. He doesn't remember this kyoshi warrior from the team's island visit... But that's okay! It meant everything to the airbender that she was willing to teach him!
Gently floating back down, the Avatar's hands are balled into fists as he leaned closer to the firebending warrior, on his tippy toes. ❝ How did you do that fireball back there? Oh! Are you gonna teach me how to do flying propulsions like some of those REALLY good firebenders can do? Wait, no I wanna learn how to breathe fire first— ❞ yap yap yap yap yap...
Aang is really good at navigating his grief. I'm happy he's the type of person who chooses to try to make the most of things, despite everything he's lost. It's really meaningful to still be kind and empathetic to others, even when you have every reason not to be... but man, it's hard too. He can be joyous and happy, and eventually he can let go of the past - there will always be that little tug.
● — || 𝐎𝐇 . 𝐇𝐄'𝐒 𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐃 . ❝ Oh , okay , so it's okay when you say it because it's
[ [ funny ] ] when you're annoying , sometimes . So , it's funny when [ [ everyone ] ] is annoying , right ? ❞
The biggest, saddest, most puppy-dog pout you can imagine. Then he lets his arms fall to his sides, and gives the waterbender the most remorseful bow anyone has ever seen.
❝ You know what? You're right, I'm being stupid. I'm sorry Katara, I don't think you're annoying.. ❞
I started rewatching ATLA again yesterday at work and a small detail in the first couple of episodes that I always really loved was the subtle ways Aang utilizes his airbending, almost in a way that seems unconscious / second nature. Such as using it to reorient himself, adjust his sitting position or stand up - snatching his staff back out of Sokka's hand, or just the way he gently floats down from places? I can't remember if they kept that little detail in the later episodes since it's been a minute since i've done an analyzing watch, (plus i think those little details were added to really emphasize in the first couple episodes how different his abilities were / unlike any living person has seen)
either way Aang definitely still utilizes his airbending like that.
