something something about maekar being a fourth son, about him most likely being raised to believe that he is less than baelor or his other brothers. if the situation arose, he would have to put his life on the line for his brother. he is his brother's shield, his brother's wall, the one meant to take an arrow for the chest. and then he internalizes that, and in his own way acts as baelors protector. at ashford when dunk was spying on them, it was maekar who got up and approached dunk, putting himself between his brother and any potential danger. his whole life he has been his brothers shield, less than a spare.

so there is a shift when baelor sides with duncan at ashford. for maekar's whole life he has protected and has expected to die for baelor. and the one time he feel baelor should stand with him, baelor does not.

and sadly the one time maekar is not there to protect baelor, but instead fights him, bealor dies.
