Petto Magazine Cover

I’m back with another assignment which is to design a magazine cover. There are few elements that should be include during the process of designing the magazine cover, such as; masthead, main cover line, tagline, cover line, bar code, the focal point, selling line and date line.

Below is the sketch of my magazine cover, it make me easier to sketch the idea first on blank paper before design it later on Adobe Illustrator.

Before I design the magazine cover on Adobe Illustrator, I use Photoshop to crop and edit few images. The design execution process mainly done in Adobe Illustrator, where the typography, placing of picture and the choice of colors all done in AI.

From the sketches and the title above, I bet you already know the theme I choose for my magazine cover. Obviously, the theme that I choose is “Pet” magazine. To be honest with you guys, it quite hard for me to have a photo-shoot session with my cat because she doesn’t like to be held.

Raya with Upin & Ipin?

Hey everyone, 

It's almost the end of Ramadan and Eid is coming soon, so excited! 

In my previous art class, my lecturer challenged us to design Hari Raya photo in a creative way using Photoshop and include Upin and Ipin (one of the Malaysia famous cartoon character) in the photo. There’s certain requirement that we have to follow which is:

1. Crop Upin and Ipin 2. Add or crop your picture 3. Add or crop situational 'Hari Raya' images to background 3. Add at least 2 bubble talks, add text 4. Maintain image perspectives 5. Highlight interaction between images (at the very least)

I am not really familiar with Photoshop because I rarely use it, but here’s the result! 

Don’t be sad, even though we can’t celebrate Raya like how we used to, we still can video-call each other! Please practice social distancing everyone and stay safe!

My font poster!

In today’s post I’m going to share with you guys my font poster that I designed using Adobe Illustrator (Ai). Basically I use Bahnschrift Bold for the font and I choose soft color for my background. The first letter of my nickname ‘Q’ represent the focal point and the line on the right side become a divider between the number and alphabetical letter.

Typography: Favorite font?

I am not an expert in typography or whatnot but I believe everyone have their own go-to font that they like to use when designing. It is really hard for me to decide which font are my favorite because there’s tons of font available nowadays and it depends on the current project that I’m working on. Well, to answer my question above, I myself have my own favorite font which I used over and over again. Even though sometimes it always changing....

In today's post, I am going to share with you guys which font I prefer to use when designing.

Bodoni Font

The Bodoni font are created by Giambattista Bodoni. It was first designed in 1798 and is widely known as serif typefaces. The real reason I like this font is because in my opinion, it has the ‘feel’ of the old style and modern typeface. It just look neat even tough it was a serif type of font and look professional. This font also has a lot of style like bold, italic, condensed, light, semi-bold and many more variation to choose form. 

Due to the classic style, Bodoni font has been used in advertising this include the brand Elizabeth Arden, Giorgio Armani and Guerline. Bodoni font not only has been featured in many logos, but also the magazine publication such as Harper’s Baazar.

Calibri Font

Other than Bodoni font, Calibri is also include in my favorite font list, specifically calibri light. It was design by typographer Lucas De Groot in 2002. To be frank, I didn’t use calibri when designing, but I used it mostly for my assignment that required a lot of writing such as essay or report. San-serif font like calibri is just look neat and clean, it not only made text a lot more easier to read but also look professional to me.

That’s it all for this post, what I can conclude is that it is really hard to say which font is my favorite because it always change depending on the task that I’m currently doing.

Bad Typography?

Previous post I have already talked about the elements of design, in today's post I’m gonna share with all of you the unattractive font that used in print material. It is very hard to say which font are ugly and which are not. It really depend on the context and usage. In my point of view, it is subjective. However, there are few fonts that we should avoid using especially the “old-fashion” style one.

Here are few example of bad typography that I found around me:

From my perspective, the font is not attractive and the design looks boring. Perhaps,  the designer wanted to design something minimal? If the font are bold it may can look good on that packaging.

My second example is from the t-shirt that I borrowed from my friend few years ago (somehow it happened to be in my wardrobe). To be honest, I don’t know why they design this t-shirt using this font. It looks so old-fashion, maybe the designer should consider to use other cursive font instead of the one printed on the t-shirt.

My last example of bad typography is from a herbal tea box. I was so confuse when I first saw and read the word “Rooibos”. I thought the last letter was “g” but it turn out to be “s”. Font usage in any print or non-print material  should be readable and not making people confuse.

In short, as I said before not all font are ugly, perhaps it does not fit in the context or theme of certain design. But again, do not forget that there are font that you should avoid using because it may ruin your entire design.

What makes a good design?

The six elements of graphic design- Line, Shape, Size, Colour, Value, and Texture.

In my previous art class, I’ve learned about the elements of design. As a student, I’ve always needed to design posters, flyers, info-graphic, brochures and many more for my uni assignments. It makes me wonder, what are the elements of design that I need to follow to make sure I create a good design.

Understanding the elements of design will help you to create a good design that can make an impact on your audience or viewer.

This is the poster that I choose which contains the six elements of design.

1. LINE

The first element of the design is line. Line is a mark between one point to another point. The are various type of line which is a horizontal line, vertical, diagonal, broken, zigzag, wavy and et cetera. The line in the poster used to divide the two information given.

2. SHAPE

The second element of design is shape. The combination of height and width will make a shape. We all learned basic shape during middle school, which is square, rectangle, circle and triangle. The design in the poster that I have choose is circle, which indicates the shape of the moon.

3. SIZE

Size is how small or large something is. The bigger the size, it will attract more attention to it. The picture of hill in the desert, as shown above, is the largest object in the poster. 

4. COLOUR

As for the colour, it used to generate emotion, create visual interest and many more. RGB is used for digital while CMYK is used for printing. 

5. VALUE

Value is how light or dark certain area looks. The black shadow at the mountain in the picture above, it’s a great way to visualize value. Orange to black indicates that the day almost come to an end (sunset). 

6. TEXTURE

Texture relates to the look or feel of the surface. The poster has a grain effect for the surface.

In a nutshell, it is important to use these elements of design, to make sure we can create a good design and the work that we produce can help to deliver the message easily.

Good Packaging, Bad Packaging.

Product packaging design refers to the creation of the outer part of the products. These include the selection of wrapping material, color, font, and et cetera.

Does the product packaging matter?

Creativity is subjective and based on individual own preferences. I believe that having a good design of packaging is crucial. It is very important to consumers and the brand itself because the design of the product packaging can influence the purchasing decisions. I personally attracted more to minimalist product packaging and I will only buy the product if I think the packaging has a good outer design.

Outstanding packaging design and its function.

There is one product packaging that I currently attracted to which is the disposal butter packaging designed by Jeon  Yeongkeun. The packaging called Butter! Better!, comes with a knife made of paper material as a butter seal which makes it easy to scope and spread the butter evenly to a bread. In my point of view, this packaging is very convenient and made it easier for people who are going for a picnic. The knife design eliminates the need of having to carry cutlery around and it is also environmentally friendly.

Unnecessary packaging design.

On the other side, there is one packaging that I found which is hard for me to believe that it is real. The “anti-theft lunch bag” designed by  Sherwood Forlee seems ridiculous from my perspective. Transparent individually square sandwich bag covered with green patches that look like mold growing on both sides. The purpose was to keep the food safe so that no one steals it because it makes the food looks like it has gone bad.

As a matter of fact, I think placing your food in a food container would be a better idea instead of in a plastic ziplock which will harm the environment. It makes sense that people in your workplace are mature enough to think that taking other people's food is a bad thing ever to do. Anyhow, this is actually a great idea but in my opinion, this is just unnecessary to do so.

What is the meaning behind Henry Ford's advertising quotes?

Advertising is a key in order to have a successful business. Why it is important? Advertising helps a business to earn money by allowing more people to know and keep up to date about the products and services and thus resulting in more sales.

Henry Ford once said,

“A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time.”

Business people who stops advertising just to save money is just worthless. Quit promoting your products or services will make you spend less money, but end up definitely make you receive less revenue.

Why well-known brand still need to advertise?

A lot of people may wonder why does well-known brand such as McDonald, Coca Cola and Nike still advertise even though they are already established. This is probably because the brand need to keep informing new generation about their products. New generation of customer would probably have no idea about the products or services. Other than that, the competition may be increase, and other brand might taking your customer away unless if you keep reminding them how valuable your products or services is.
