OutKast to Reunite at Coachella?
Dreams (maybe) do come true.
Off the phenomenal "Saint Heron" compilation.
"Media cannot be limited to the album release date. It must be a 24/7, 365-day-a-year effort. Same with creativity." "Labels are no longer in the record business, they’re in the star business. How to maximize the revenue of an individual or band in as many media as possible, in as many ways as possible. Yes, while you were bitching about piracy, your whole business model disappeared." Exactly. The model is changing - the product is no longer simply the music itself. The smart ones are already pivoting - everyone else will be left in the dust.
Coming off a wave of strong buzz (and a $10 million box office take) - It looks like Woody Allen has another hit on his hands. Blue Jasmine is set to expand to 1,200 theaters this weekend - up from a current run on 229 screens. What is most remarkable is that this will be Woody Allen's widest film release ever.
With award buzz already stirring for Cate Blanchett - It's safe to mark this one down as a "Must See". I know I will definitely be catching it this weekend.
Fascinating new approach at interactive storytelling from Disney. The idea of participating in a story rather than being told a story is genius.
One of the most intriguing ways of utilizing social media (and implementing effective campaigns) is to utilize the digital realm to bring fans together and enable the initial conversations - but then to be able to implement real world "challenges" as well.
We spend the majority of our time on the go and with smartphones in hand - so why not keep us engaged and utilize that to the brands advantage?
It will be interesting to see where they take this from here - I would love to be able to participate in running one of these campaigns.
One of my all time favorite hip-hop records gets a re-tooling via emerging producer Preservation. The way this remix re-contextualizes the original is truly phenomenal. I highly recommend giving both this and the original LP - "The Ecstatic" a listen.

Say what you will about Jay-Z and his recent experiment with brand-sponsored music, but you can't deny his penchant for rule-breaking.
The RIAA announced today that it will change the rules to no longer require a 30 day wait on certifying an album Platinum/Gold (a wait based on the turn-around time to count Vinyl and CD sales). Meaning that in the eyes of the RIAA Jay-Z will be platinum from Day One.
So while it may take Billboard a few weeks (months?) to figure out how to best incorporate brand-sponsored content into the charts, Jay-Z has already accomplished one major industry change - all before even dropping the actual album.
Should we be surprised? After all.. he is a business. man.
Quasimoto - Yessir Whatever
Pitchfork is streaming the new Quasimoto LP "Yessir Whatever" via Pitchfork Advance. The alter-ego of the amazing Madlib - the Quasimoto project is again marked by both it's distinctive high-pitched vocals and stellar Madlib production.

The Smith Westerns first caught my eye back in the fall of 2011 after a decent (if not totally memorable) set as the opening act for the Arctic Monkeys in Nashville.
I would say that I respected them more than I liked them (if that makes any sense).
Fast forward to this April and I saw them once again at Coachella. Again, I was left with the same "eh" feeling. (Though in all fairness - This time it may have been partly due to the combination of scorching heat and iffy mixing).
While I continue to wrestle with my feelings towards the band - The new song (and lead track off the bands sophomore album) is undeniably a catchy tune. So give it a listen and form your own opinions. I look forward to watching the bands continued growth - albeit from a distance.
When Frank Ocean dropped his sprawling/epic/amazing "debut" (studio) single "Pyramids" - it was a defining statement. Essentially, Mr. Ocean was saying that he made it without radio and he would continue to make it without radio.
He would not pander, creativity would trump commerce.
It looks like Abel Tesfaye was taking notes.
With the debut single from The Weeknd - Abel has moved in a similar direction to that of Frank Ocean and dropped an 8 minute sprawling epic of his own. Now all that being said - does the song deliver?
Yes.
Amongst a dark moody production that is littered with piercing screams and thick synths, Abel does his thing and he does it damn well. The song grooves, and his vocals are better than ever. Earlier this week, he released the song in a teaser clip entitled "John Carpenter" - This song could soundtrack the darkest of Carpenters work and I really hope we are about to be hit with at an "Epic" mini-movie music video.
Towards the end of the song, Abel takes to repeating "this ain't nothing to relate to" and sure enough, we may not be able to relate, but it sure does feel good to try.
Chance The Rapper exists in some universe where Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar and Kanye West all got together and somehow ended up with an illegitimate love child. Hit www.chanceraps.com and download his new mix-tape Acid Rain.
This time next year, it'll be Chance who is receiving the critical acclaim that is currently raining down on Kendrick Lamar.
#AbSoul #MacMiller #Rap // New one from Ab-Soul aka one of the most promising new artists to hit the scene. With Kendrick getting all of the TDE love lately, it's good to hear that Soul is stepping up his game. For all we know, this time next year it'll be him getting all the spotlight.
Oh, and special shout to Mac Miller who with this and the Flying Lotus produced SDS is officially on a roll. 5/5

Today marks the 20th (I know what your thinking..only 20th!?) anniversary of the world wide web. As a result, the very first website has been restored to it's original web address and is available for your viewing pleasure (or horror, depending on how you look at it).
What's perhaps the most interesting about the whole thing, is that it gives a very raw look at the original intentions and dreams for the internet. The site provides the following explanation for those who back in 1993, would have been wondering just what this new "World Wide Web" was all about.
"The WorldWideWeb (W3) is a wide-area hypermedia information retrieval initiative aiming to give universal access to a large universe of documents."
Looking at that explanation, one can ascertain that we have certainly met the initial expectation of "document access". Some would even argue, that we have provided way to much access and in a manner that some find most illegal (..The Pirate Bay, Wikileaks.. and so the list could roll on and on). Also interesting, is that the internet has expanded beyond mere "document access" and moved to more of a social access tool.
To illustrate my point, let's talk Seinfeld.
Last night, I was watching an episode of Seinfeld where Kramer goes to the Cayman Islands in place of George (whom to his displeasure was warned for reasons unknown against going on the trip). When Kramer arrives back in town, he tells Jerry and George about the wild experience the trip provided him (for starters, witnessing the array Sports Illustrated swimsuit models lay beside him on a nude beach).
Now, I was struck by this scene as I watched last nights re-rerun. What exactly struck me as interesting? The fact that in today's age, Jerry and George would have known about the SI models in realtime. You bet that Kramer would have been tweeting, instagramming, and facebooking that hell out of that moment, or at the very least texting his friends about his fortune.
The idea that in todays world, one of our friends would experience such a moment and not tell us instantly, is shocking. Now would Kramer have enjoyed the moment as much, had he been looking at a screen and not the models? Well... that's a whole other can of worms for another day and another article.
What we can say for sure, is that the internet has transformed our world and given us not only "document access" but "social access" as well. So whatever your opinions of file-sharing, media streaming, cloud storage, social networking are, be sure to take a moment today and salute the wonder of human innovation that is the world wide web.
Put together a mix of #arcticmonkeys B-Sides. If you dig the band, give em a listen! #spotify #music
#socialmedia #foursquare // Foursquare is now drawing around 50 million users per month (!?) on it's website and as a result has gone back to the drawing boards and unveiled a vastly revamped business page. With Foursquare increasingly becoming the go to way of finding places to go, the move can only help increase it's dominance over the once reigning champ Yelp.
#daftpunk // The track hasn't even been out a week yet, and I already feel like it has been around for years. Daft Punk was able to lock into a timeless feel with the new single off the upcoming Random Access Memories and in doing so continue to drive the (astounding) level of excitement for the duos new record. Best to start memorizing this one now, y'all will be singing it in Indio come Coachella 2014. 5/5
Let me preface this by saying that I have never really listened to Mac Miller and based on what I have heard, I feel like this track may be the exception. Regardless. With FlyLo on the beat, the new Mac Miller track S.D.S locks you into a trance and doesn't let go. Post Captain Murphy FlyLo is determined to make his name in the hip hop world, and if this is any indication of what he can do for artists, than bring it on. 5/5
