“Taikoubou… is here as well? A beast-hunting specialist… I wonder if he really did mistake me for someone else up until the very end. Though, I had a feeling that his intentions were truly pure. Trying to understand the enemy you’re tasked to defeat… seriously… this is why I hate humans.”
So it seems like Dark Koyanskaya has a similar philosophy to Barghest, as in: 'The strong only fights the strong, and don't need to fight the weak'.
The difference being that Barghest wants to protect the weak, and sees those weaker than her as beings that are in need of help but is also well-rounded enough to let them live their own lives. You won't die under her watch if you're weak, and if you're strong then you have an obligation to follow her example.
Dark Koyanskaya sees the weak as nothing more than pets that she can toy with and harrass as much as possible, and her only goal with focusing on fighting the strong is to make them 'weaker than her', so that they can also become their pets. You won't die under her if you're weak, but if you're strong then you'll be made weak, and become another animal in her cage.
Strangely enough, which 'Koyanskaya of Light' has no actual affection for humans and will gladly kill and slaughter them, 'Koyanskaya of Darkness' genuinely has affection for humans (since they're animals too) and therefore won't aim to kill them (torture and 'taming' isn't off the table, though).
It seems like Light Koyanskaya is an 'industrialist' who wants to constantly build and create weapons of destruction, while Dark Koyanskaya is a 'collector' who wants to own every living creature regardless of their perceived strength and status.
Mochizuki Jun The Case Study of Vanitas Anime da Vinci Interview - pt. 1 -
An interview with MochiJun about Vanitas was uploaded to Anime da Vinci, and while I’d seen a lot of partial translations, I haven’t spotted a full one. This is my attempt. Corrections and suggestions are gladly accepted. The link to the original is at ddnavi, appended with interview/808972/a/. Since the interview is pretty long, I’ll be breaking it up into three parts.
The opening paragraphs of the article are just the same summary/promotional lines from every other official Vanitas source, so I won’t bother translating them again.
To summarize its contents: Mochizuki talks about inspiration for Vanitas and her time in Paris, how she wants to make people want to go to Paris, and a little spoiler.
She conceived the character of “Vanitas” during her first trip to France…
- Please tell us the details of how The Case Study of Vanitas was born. What kind of idea created this work?
Mochizuki Jun: Aahh, how far should I go back… ahaha…? For my next work [after Pandora Hearts] I’d been thinking, “I want to draw either vampires or a school setting~” and I conceived the character of “Vanitas” during my first trip to France. While sightseeing in Mont Saint-Michel, I mused on drawing “the story of a single vampire who’d watched over an island for something like one hundred years.” Everything else about The Case Study of Vanitas came from that one idea, and the general forms of Vanitas and Noé were born there.
MJ: There were a ton of things I thought about doing for my new serialization after Pandora Hearts, like increasing the number of romance and battle elements. With regards to battle scenes… to be honest, when I was drawing Pandora Hearts, the head editor told me to cut down on them since “you kind of suck at this,” and I wanted to give up. I started thinking, though, like “I don’t draw them so of course they suck! If I drew them more, they’d be good!” and frantically studied to improve with every volume. I have to get way better at anatomy and the composition of fight scenes in comparison to my last work… is what I thought.

Mochizuki-sensei interview July 08
Hi there! It’s me again. There is a new interview with Mochizuki Jun about VNC, so I though it would be fun to share some untold background stories.
Mochizuki-sensei says that in the case of PandoraHearts, her fighting scenes were cut off firstly, because there were not so good, so she wanted to include and practice fight scenes in the new series. (Success) She wanted to draw an academy themed manga or a vampire one, when she visited Anime Expo in France and she got inspired. Also, she mentioned that as long as she remembers, ‘Interview with the vampire’ was the first vampire movie she was inpsired by. At first the concept was: Vanitas = Sherlock (vampire) Noe = Watson (human) But it was not interesting, it was too ordinary, so their position were changed and the concept greatly improved in a second, but that’s why Vanitas still has that sharpish high canine tooth. (I don’t know how they say in English :D) Also, someone said to her that Vanitas’ hair was weird so she cut it to bangs on the sides. Noe was supposed to be wearing glasses and he was the one with common sense. From Mochizuki-sensei’s perspective, Vanitas is someone who hates himself and a contrary person (we already knew that), Noe is an “outside adult, inside little girl” type.
Now there is an interesting part (for fans, it will be heartbreaking): Mochizuki-sensei mentioned that in PandoraHearts everyone who died accomplished a “rewarded death”, they got their spotlights and goals were completed, BUT in VNC she would like to draw death without reward or meaningless death as well. There was a question whether she has a plot in her head already, regarding the last scene of the first episode. Yes, where Noe has a monologue that he will kill Vanitas. She said that she has to decide beforehand a plot goal to be able to work on the manga, but it could be an ending or a turning point which the story has to pass by. So yeah, THAT scene can be a middle turning point as well.
Last, about the anime, she is looking forward to see the Roland fight scene to be animated. Ah, aaa, I forgot! Thanks to Hanae-san voice, Mochizuki-sensei remembered that Vanitas is only 18 years old. :D Noe became more sincere and more natural airhead thanks to Ishikawa-san’s voice.
The full interview is long, so I picked up only the main points. https://ddnavi.com/interview/808972/a/
I’m not used to write in English, so sorry in advance for the grammar mistakes.
Anyway I will simply not survive when this DomiJeanne gets animated
[Spoilers for VNC CH 52]
If it means Noé won’t get hurt anymore because of me…

Yep, I’m giving you an essay(?) about this woman and why I think she’s neat.
