Just wanted to bring to your attention that the term whump was actually coined by the Stargate fandom specifically to describe making this guy suffer. He is the original Mr. Whump (no that's not his actual name). That's how torturable this guy is.

His parents get crushed to death right in front of him when he is a kid
He is forced to relive the memory of his parents death countless times
He dies and gets resurrected
His wife gets possessed
He fails to save her and she dies in his arms
He dies and gets resurrected again
He gets infected by a virus that makes him act crazy and gets put in an insane asylum
He dies and gets resurrected again
His ex gets possessed
He is exposed to a lethal dose of radiation
He dies and ascends to a higher plane, then gets kicked out of the higher plane and his memory is wiped
I have received all manner of threat, up to and beyond “I will play a flute carved from your femur,” and yet this is the first time I’ve felt truly threatened

It's a strange thing, when your friends are online.
I don't see your faces. Our relationship is nothing but words on a screen, punctuated by memes and emojis and gifs. But I hear your voices in the way you type. This one rambles about what she loves and this one is excitable and this one is often quiet but leaps into conversations with enthusiasm when she is invested in the topic and this one is slow to respond but always, inevitably does.
You say come, sit with me and nothing changes, we're both sitting alone in our rooms a thousand miles apart, and yet everything changes. I am curled up against you in some small way and we are apart-together and together-apart and it soothes the deep ache of loneliness for a little bit. You say my couch is always open for you to crash on despite the fact that I may never be in the area to do so and it is reassuring somehow. You say I am like you in not so many words and too many words and I tuck you under my wing in an attempt to shelter you from the cruelties that tore into me.
I can speak through words when my own voice stutters and dies. We offer small pieces of our lives to each other, snapshots of time caught in our screens. I am desperate for each and every one, hoarding them like a dragon does their hoard, more precious to me than gems or gold. I smile like an idiot every time I see a notification pop up on my phone, and perhaps this too is a kind of being in love.
You are all scattered miles apart from me and you are tucked into my pocket. I miss you every day that we are apart and yet somehow we are so rarely ever apart in a way that matters.
So.... I saw Project Hail Mary and I'm just... not sure about it.
MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD
I have listened to the audiobook (highly recommend if you haven't) and read the book probably 50x over the last 4 years including doing a relisten last week to prepare. I can finally say "I have a favorite book" and it's Project Hail Mary.
I think it's told perfectly and to refer to this tumblr screenshot that I found on Pinterest:
The same thing is true of the way Weir tells the story and builds the characters, especially Ryland...
I just didn't see that in the movie and I'm disappointed.
Obviously things were going to be cut and condensed, especially in the Earth flashbacks, and they were - most of that I didn't have a problem with. I don't see the point of renaming the army guy "Steve" to "Carl" but whatever. I also feel like we lost a of Stratt's character and there was definitely not enough Dimitri. We also didn't get enough of the crew, especially Dubois and Shapiro, it makes all 4 deaths less impactful and emotional.
I expected things like the Stratt courtroom scene, blowing up Antartica, and other "off location" scenes (like meetings with Dr. Lokken and Bob Redell) to be cut as well. That's fine.
I didn't expect them to cut an entire crisis/problem-solving situation by skipping the first Taumoeba outbreak and having to use the Beatles as engines and another tense non-zero gravity EVA.
I also didn't expect them to have Rocky save Ryland AND himself and then be "maybe dead" for that long... it really takes away from Ryland's character growth at that point.
Also the Stratt vs Grace "You're murdering me" scene was nowhere near as impactful as it should have been.
I didn't hate it. I'm just disappointed. Especially since The Martian did such a good job of explaining the science and sticking to the book. The music in The Martian also just felt more meshed in and fitting. I expected a music/montage over grace and rocky learning to communicate and building the chain (which the scale of is really lost).
I definitely need to see it a few more times to decide my final thoughts and I liked plenty of it.
They have never made a fictional charcter hotter than they did kevin ryan in the Wild Rover episode when he called on his friends. The calling on Javi, Beckett and Castle while telling everyone how badass they were. Like the way he said it was so hot
