“That sounds fantastic. I’ll meet you here at 5?” Al asked. They were to the steps of the home and Al turned to face Annabel once more. “Thank you again for a fantastic night. I’m glad I got the chance to meet you. Happy New Years,” They took Annabel’s hand and kissed her hand gently. 

annabel nodded in response. “ five sounds great, “ she smiled. she usually left her office around two on fridays anyway. more than enough time to spend with the kids and get ready. “ no, thank you. i had a great time. “ a blush came across annabel’s cheeks. she kissed al on the cheek before ducking inside the house.

“You and your sister don’t get along well, huh?” He shoveled in another mouth full of the popcorn. “Why is that? I don’t have any siblings.” 

Al shrugged. “It’s not that big of an issue. She just likes to act like my mother. Be glad you don’t have siblings.” They looked at the clock and grinned widely. “Yes! Only 10 more minutes left on this shift.”

annabel chuckled slightly and nodded. “ perhaps. how’s friday though? “ she added with a smile. it would be her first date since james, but she wasn’t filled with anxiety or guilt like she thought she would be. in fact, she was excited at the thought. 

“That sounds fantastic. I’ll meet you here at 5?” Al asked. They were to the steps of the home and Al turned to face Annabel once more. “Thank you again for a fantastic night. I’m glad I got the chance to meet you. Happy New Years,” They took Annabel’s hand and kissed her hand gently.

“Uhm,” Hiccup stuttered at the upset face. He should have lowered his voice instead of shrieking his worries out. “No? Yes? Maybe?” Why did his friend leave him alone in this situation. The jerk.

“I just, I wasn’t sure...” They looked down at the ground. “Because you were talking about a her... but..” Al stopped talking, feeling awkward with the conversation.

          ❝ DID I ASK YOU IF you wanted a room ?? i asked you if you wanted a bite to eat. two totally different things, might i add, ❞ he said. though his voice was stern, there was a playful lilt to it, as if the two had been friends for a long time ( far from the truth, the motel seemed to move on its own from city to city, hopefully, the motel would stay for good here ). ❝ the name’s demon. until i deem you worthy enough of my real name. you know, the whole … your name has magical properties and shouldn’t be given out lightly kind of thing. demon the motel owner. the motel owner demon !! take your pick. ❞

Al stopped and thought for a moment. He was right, they had just assumed he meant something about renting a room in the process. “Fair point. I’d quite enjoy some breakfast food, thanks for asking.” They listened as the man explained his philosophy on names. “Well then, I guess it’s a good thing that Al’s only a nickname. I’ll probably just go with D if I’m being honest.” Al took a moment to listen to the music. “This is interesting, what is it?”

annabel smiled softly as her house came into view. she wondered if the admiral set off the canon at midnight. she also wondered if the kids were still up. her thoughts stopped as al spoke. annabel smiled and blushed some. “ i would love to, “ she said happily. 

Al nodded with a grin. “Fantastic! When are you free? I feel like your schedule is probably busier than mine.” They were ecstatic at the thought of the date.

“What are you doing? We need her to LIKE us!”

“Uh, I hope you weren’t talking about me?” Al made a face.

annabel smiled and held onto al’s hand. their fingers laced together made her blush. she glanced down at her feet and began walking towards her family home. “ no, thank you. i really enjoyed myself, “ she said with a genuine smile. 

Al tried to hold back a frown as the two neared the lane. They knew that the house was nearby and that their time was coming to an end. “I’m glad you did. Would you want to, ah, maybe...” Al ran a hand through their hair again, “Go out sometime? Like on a date?”

          THE MUSIC WAS LOUD, BUT it didn’t bother the motel owner in the slightest. why would it ?? he was the one who requested it. he sat at the clerk’s desk, using a pair of pens to drum the beat in the air. he was singing along to the lyrics, in his own little world. when he heard the bell chime, a noise he’s learned to discern out of the loud music coming from the lounge of the motel, he looked up and gave a crooked grin. ❝ hey !! welcome to howl’s castle, how can i help ya today ?? we offer a free breakfast to our guests but what the hey, wanna share a bite ?? i’ll turn down the music if you’d like. ❞

Al looked around at the motel, unsure of the music. it was overwhelming them slightly, but that was normal to them. “Oh, I actually live in town but thank you. I was just coming to introduce myself. I’m Al.”

annabel grinned widely at that. she let her attention go back to the fireworks as they finished up, sitting closer to al than previously. a small frown drew upon her face as they ended. it was replaced pretty quickly as al offered their hand to the woman. “ thanks, ” she said, taking it as she stood up. “ 17 cherry tree lane. ”

Al instinctively laced their fingers through Annabel’s as the pair started walking. They knew where cherry tree lane was and turned to head that way. “Well thank you for letting me steal you away for the night.”

annabel’s cheeks went bright red. she was thankful for the cover of night to cover it up. this was the best new years she’d had in two years. “ it was, ” she said kindly with a smile. she leaned in and kissed al on the cheek, hoping to ease both their nerves. “ wanna walk home with me? ” annabel didn’t really want to go home, but knew she should.

Al breathed a small sigh of relief and grinned widely before blushing at the soft extra kiss on their cheek. It helped calm the 24-year-old down and they nodded. “I’d love to walk you home, Annabel.” The pair watched the last few fireworks before Al stood and offered their hand to annabel once more. “Where do you live?” they asked.

annabel shrugged slightly. she was too caught up in the fireworks to remember the conversation. flashes of green, gold and blue filled the air. she wondered if her own kids were up watching them. she knew she’d have to get home eventually. as she felt al’s lips upon hers, annabel stopped. her eyes widened and she hesitated for a moment. then a thought passed through her head - why was she holding back? it’s not what james would have wanted. annabel only held herself back out of guilt for her late husband, not because she didn’t want to. in fact, she most definitely did want to kiss al. it was hard to admit, but the moment she realized it, she cupped al’s cheek and kissed them back. “happy new year,” she smiled.

Al smiled in the kiss as Annabel kissed back. all of their momentary fears left their mind as the woman responded in kind and al felt at ease. for the first time in a long time, Al actually felt dazed, instead of just faking it. They couldn’t think straight. “I, ah, I hope that was ok.” Al ran a hand through their hair. It seemed as if Annabel did not mind, but Al couldn’t just assume.

annabel’s eyes gazed up to the sky as the fireworks began to pop. she grinned as the bright colors filled the night sky. without even thinking, she settled into the seat and scooted closer to al. it was weird. she was so caught up in the moment that her own past fears didn’t seem to matter. “ for what? “ she said, smiling as she tore her gaze away from the sky to look at al.

“Hm..?” Al had gotten distracted and couldn’t even remember what they were talking about. Their hand started to absentmindedly play with Annabel’s loose hair. Al turned their head to look down at Annabel. She really was beautiful. Al didn’t know what had come over them, but they definitely knew that they weren’t going to stop themselves from doing what they wanted at the moment. As the finale burst and the main clock in town began to ring, Al gave a half smile to Annabel. “Uh.. Happy New Years.” Al took a breath in and closed the rest of the space, placing a gentle kiss on the woman’s lips.

a smile spread on annabel’s face. she loved fireworks. they always seemed so magical and wonderful to her. she took al’s hand without hesitation and followed them. she blushed at the nickname and nodded. “ lead the way! “ annabel followed al to the bistro before sitting down. “ why thank you, “ she smiled, wondering where this newfound attitude came from. 

The fireworks began to burst in the sky and Al smiled as they saw the excitement in Annabel’s face. The colors reflected off of her smooth skin and they made her eyes sparkle. Al bit the inside of their cheek, knowing what they wanted to do at midnight. But would it be too much? Probably... “You’re quite welcome,” Al replied as they put their arm around Annabel again once both of them were situated in their chairs.

she nodded in response. “ they usually do. they don’t understand that it can be heartbreaking to not be understood, though. “ annabel hadn’t felt this free to talk about her brothers like this since james had passed. she loved her brothers, truly, but they didn’t seem to understand her. especially not after mary left when they were younger. “ oh yes please! “ she exclaimed with excitement. 

Al laughed at Annabel’s excitement. They finally took their arm off of her shoulders and offered her a hand instead. “This way, m’lady.” Al said with a quick wink. They had no idea where that had come from, but somehow it had felt right. They led the two of them toward a closed bistro with a small table out front. Al pulled out a chair for Annabel before sitting down next to her.

annabel smiled and nodded as al talked. “ good. i know family can seem a bit harsh. my own brothers mean well but we had our differences growing up. they usually mean well though. “ she wondered what was too much to say. annabel glanced around until she could set her eyes on one of the million clocks that seemed to surround the area. “ it’s 11:55, if i’m reading that correctly. “

They nodded in agreement. “You’re right. I’m sure Mathilda means well, too.” As Annabel told Al what time it was, they thought for a moment. “Would you like to find a place to watch the fireworks?” They asked, hoping that they weren’t being too forward.

After shoveling another delicious handful of popcorn into his mouth, Woody looked at them, “Why not both?” he chuckled at his own dumb rhetoric. “Its is very good though, thank you. So why do you spend so much time here, besides the popcorn obviously?”

“Valid point,” Al laughed. “Well, I work here for starters. So I’m here because if not they’ll fire me. But I’m also here all the time because that way I can escape my sister.” It wasn’t that they didn’t love their sister, she was just so overbearing. Al needed a break from her.
