A moment from Dune where Duke Leto stands and watches the sunrise. While I was drawing this, my sketchbook gave up on life (never buy a €3 sketchbook) and literally tore apart, but to my surprise, Leto survived ( ironic af)

Always intuitively imagined the tleilaxu culture to be a mix of eurochristian and aztec culture, only to realise how obvious it actually is in the books without being explicitly stated.
Soundwise first of all, “tleilax” sounds very much like Nahuatl, to my very amateur mind anyway, not to mention the “axolotl” tanks and the mention of pyramids on their planet at some point in the books. Their relationship to the concepts of life and death was also very much a mix of Christian and religious Aztec philosophy to me, and the way they treated women seemed especially Christian.
Anywayy, yet another example of how much of an intelligent, cultured and subtle writer F. Herbert was. Forever fascinated with his work.
(my bene tleilax inspiration collage if you even care)
I want to say that I really don’t understand why modern science fiction often looks so bland. I don’t like this tendency toward realism in a genre that is literally about aliens and space travel. In my opinion, that’s exactly the point of science fiction that within this genre you can create any kind of visual imagination or even visual madness.
And about aliens…
It feels very strange when people portray completely different forms of life as basically humans with a different skin color, with a single religion, language, nature, and traditions for an entire planet. It’s as if those who do this forget about our own Earth.

Dune fandom is such a jail. I don’t understand how it’s possible to write so little and yet so much at the same time… anyway, here are some sketches with Paul, Chani, and Feyd
