Dominicans say “cocolo.” It was originally used to identify the non latinx blacks or darker skin in general. Majority of the time, it is used as a slur to compare blacks, both non-spanish speaking and latinx. So if you hear (pronounced “co-co-low”) it, please don’t hold back.

I used to hang around alot of mexicans. And the word i learned was “Mayate” (Pronounced my-yah-teh). It literally translates to “n****r”. So if you hear it, pop the fuck off.

Yeah, my friend’s parents use to throw parties and this guy used to come up to me and be like “AYYE QUE PASO MAYATE” and laugh when he did it. And i used to dap him up and smile cuz i had no idea what it meant until my friend pulled me to the side and told me cuz he was gettin tired of that shit. They had to legit PRY me off this nigga the next time he said that shit. So yeah, Mayate or Mayata. (Thats pretty much the female version of it.)

One that I know is “pinacate.” It’s a black stink bug in Mexico and used as a term against Black folks and dark skinned non-Black folks. It’s pronounced (in Spanish) pee-nah-kah-teh.

mayate doesn’t literally translate to the n word, it comes from the aztec word mayatl, which translates to winged beetle.

it’s a dung eating black beetle. the first time i asked my mom about what it meant she looked shocked cuz my parents didn't talk like that. I heard it from the other chicanx kids on the block and they used it all casual cuz no one seemed to know the real definition. ii’m thankful my mom set me straight.

it is definitely a vulgar slur and anybody using that as “slang” need to learn real quick that its unacceptable or get knocked tf out...

I understand what you meant but I disagree with large parts of your post. Forcing people to identify with mestizaje is forcing people to identify with a history of trauma and rape. It also does not account for the fact that we were displaced, erased, and killed off via colonization. We did not have a choice in the matter. So while yes, experiences aren't the same, we can begin the decolonization process and identify with indigenous ways of being and knowing (not to excuse the Mexica movement)

I understand colonization was forced upon us, and as much as that hurts, we can’t erase it. By claiming to be indigenous when you’re not even familiar with indigenous customs & culture is disrespectful. And even if you educate yourself on indigenous cultures (which I think is amazing & try to do myself), mestizxs will never experience what indigenous people do, so don’t erase their experience by claiming their identity.

same struggle here, I know I have indigenous heritage de mexico but can't get specifics cuz I been stuck on this side til recently por mojada.

the way I was taught by my folks was that if u got native blood on native land its on you to uphold your responsibilities to the air u breathe and the water you walk on.

being mestizo is of course an entirely different experience than growing up on a rez or with living connections to your ancestry, but I've been welcomed by hella natives who understand the situations.. so many natives were stolen and adopted out to white families, forced off to boarding schools, been ripped from their heritage and can have a huge uphill battle to reclaim their roots.

my bad for the long ass post just I think about this heavily.. cuz I feel that what guides me is ancestral memory, and I'm always looking for the way to balance out honoring my indigenous heritage without false claiming aspects of native culture like it's mine. plus there's just so many folks who are in the same situation trynna figure it out a la misma vez
