niche post for me and the small handful of people who understand my vision, but up til now I've been very conflicted about whether I think Al sees Vox as the living embodiment of everything wrong with men (predatory, entitled, comfortable abusing power but crumples like paper mache the moment you put him on the back foot) or as Basically A Woman, Really, I Mean Just Look At Him (high energy, incomprehensible, fundamentally nonthreatening but very entertainingly so). and I've decided that the real answer is that Al swings between both perspectives based on his mood with absolutely no in between and no acknowledgement at any given moment he has ever felt differently. and in this way it can be argued that Alastor was technically the first person ever to clock Vox's genderfluidity.

Too often there's a dichotomy drawn between getting an abortion and parenting but lots of people who get abortions want to parent! They just don't want to parent in this exact set of circumstances, right now. I want to see them cooing obnoxiously over baby clothes and setting up a hellish educational savings account and babyproofing their apartment and asking Stolas traumatizing questions about parenting and working through their fears mid battle and the abortion is a thirty second offhand flashback. One thing I love about Hazbin Hotel that I never see discussed much, is how Charlie Morningstar is litteraly hells only second generation immigrant. All the Sinners, Lucifer, Lilith, the deadly sins were either born on earth or created in heaven. They're immigrants to hell who remember somewhere else. All the Hellborn species were created in Hell by the deadly sins and have no roots anywhere else. Charlie is neither. Its just another example of how she's so isolated and alone from even her closest friends and fammily. And also the way she extremely embodies second-generation immigrant tensions: feeling very proud of her birth home while also glamorizing her ancestral homeland, even if it turns out to be not quite a great as she imagined it, and also being very over-eager to please and show how well she's integrated... even if she doesn't quite belong to either world.

Knowing the creator I can't see that as entirely accidental.

Fashion Plate 1: Habit à la française of embroidered silk, with flowers for an absent lover: zinnia (I mourn your absence. Yellow: daily remembrance. Magenta: lasting affection), aster (patience), ivy (fidelity) and Indian jasmine (attachment). Alastor is Creole & not necessarily a mixed biracial

Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine, especially as a mixed person and one from a background where these distinctions are more easily recognised. I hope more people get that Creole =/= mixed race as we understand it today. Alastor couldddd be “mixed race”, as in the biracial product of two diversely monoracially identified parents, but he most likely is straight up Louisiana Creole or even Black mixed with Creole, given the race relations of his region and era.

Louisiana Creole, like South African Coloured, like ‘Latino’/Moreno (the racialised collective thought of as Mestizo, ‘Pardo’ & f.k.a. ‘Mulato’), is an ethnic group of multigenerationally multi-racially mixed people. Because of caste systems, these groups had their own status/esteem in society, and in such as in the cases of many French & Spanish colonies and South Africa – their own communities.

Jim Crow was based on the ‘one-drop rule’ (one drop of African blood = Black), meaning that Creoles of Colour were politically umbrellaed with the rest of the African diaspora. During slavery in Louisiana, Creoles of Colour had a notable slaver class, for example. This kind of nuanced caste system, more akin to elsewhere in the colonial Americas was made literally “black and white” by the Anglo-American policy of Jim Crow.

In Louisiana particularly, Jim Crow was a change from Code Noir, the French laws around interracial relations. Just to paint the picture, in 1803, America takes Louisiana, formerly French colony, from a few decades of Spanish rule. Jim Crow laws come around in response to the abolition of slavery in the late 19th century to maintain white supremacy. Between the Americanisation of Louisiana and the codification of Jim Crow, attitudes and policies shift over the decades from the attitude of tiered racialised hierarchy to a binary racialised hierarchy. Slavery, of course, does the bulk of the segregation until abolition.

Within this code, while relations between black men and white women (very charged topic, to this day) were forbidden, white men still did take on black/black-mixed women as common wives (not legal). There were customs around it, called plaçage. And these relationships would result in the children of these relationships being born free, which as I understand it, is the main foundation of this Creoles of Colour becoming a distinct ethnic group from say, the children of slavers assaulting their slaves, and those children being born into slavery anyway. So Creoles had a lot of legal privileges that black slaves did not, most commonly intermarried amongst themselves, continuing a free Creole lineage, and did so freely.

Under Spanish rule, race relations in Louisiana were more flexible, as was the case in other Spanish colonies. But you have to remember that culture is a very powerful thing, so it’s not suddenly off to the races. However, black people getting bought out of or buying themselves out of slavery into freedom was more common, and this growing black community were able to do business and such. And interracial marriage was legal.

By the 1810s, that’s all done and dusted. The American way is anti-miscegenation. The American way is separate. And one day they tack on “but equal” to doll it up, but that’s obviously never been the reality.

So coming to Jim Crow, unlike during South African apartheid where Coloureds were treated as a distinct category, Creoles of Colour were classed as Black.

Alastor was born in Jim Crow and died in it. Most likely, there hasn’t been a white person in his family in generations. Legally, there wouldn’t be. But with this rundown, I hope you get what I mean when I say whether or not that’s the case would have absolutely no bearing on him being Creole.

As always, headcanon what you like, but I keep seeing this idea that Alastor’s relationship with his parents MUST be dictated by a racial complex. The reality is that he very likely is not the child of a monoracial white person. Creole to the bone or part black & part Creole are most likely.

But that doesn’t mean he has to have a good relationship with his father or have a present father; he can have fatherless behaviour/energy on his own merits hahahahaha

I’ve done some research to fill in my blanks here, I didn’t know all this off the dome, and I encourage everyone to do their own!!! I probably fucked something up as always hahahaha. But the coat of my island’s national arms says “out of many, one people”, and it’s something that really goes for all the African diaspora ethnic groups in the Americas. Our ethnicities are made distinct by our history, we have our own communities and cultures. And as someone who is also individually biracial/bi-ethnic on top of that, it really is not the same experience whatsoever 😅

There are similarities between us, but we’re different, like siblings from the same mother. That’s why Africa is the ‘motherland’ 🤎

Of the Overlords whose portfolios we don't know much about yet; I think it would be fun if Zestial used to be an information broker. Before Hell was a surveillance state and the regular exterminations winnowed down the population he could find any relative or old enemy (or at least ascertain if they were in hell or not). He's got that spider theming and the implication is that he's stepped back from power recently, which would make sense if his specialty became more or less obsolete with internet messaging boards. Of course technology isn't quite as pervasive as the Vees would like it to be, and some people don't want to be found. So he still takes a few retirement-jobs now and then.

Maestro, on the other hand, I imagine running a very boring import-export business that has nothing to do with opera. That's just a hobby.

The thing about Alastor and sex crimes is that he thinks they're cringe. It's embarrassing for everyone involved. For him, this is like going about life wearing full Joker cosplay. Fundamentally unserious behavior. Deeply unfortunate for everyone around you, but he's not morally opposed to it! He is maybe going to mock you about it though, quite possibly in a public venue.

Technically speaking, poisonedapple could still be radioapple. Just very, terribly toxic. Include some entrapment and well-intentioned “be friends!!” along with forced societal politeness, a dash of Lu’s inability to recognize boundaries, Al’s refusal to enforce his own boundaries, and you could get some seriously nasty misunderstanding soup.

Kind of like WFLT actually, but without the genuine affection and compassion that eventually rights the wrongs.

What I am reading into this ask (and perhaps this is wrong but it's what I'm reading into it) is some kind of circumstance where (1) Alastor starts being (enforced) nicer to Lucifer so as not to seriously fuck himself over w/r/t Charlie, the hotel, and his deal, (2) Lucifer misinterprets it in a very different and very unique direction, and (3) we end up in some sort of evil cursed one sided fake dating scenario.

I like it. Let me expand.

I think under point (2), the thing that would be very reasonable for Lucifer to misinterpret would be Alastor not being willing to just fuck off in the first place. Like, logically, if this big scary Overlord actually had a problem with Lucifer, he wouldn't be afraid of being kicked out of Charlie's hotel. He'd just leave. To all appearances, it's never been that serious to Alastor -- at best it's a weird hobby, or he's like cosplaying an peculiar Patron of old -- so why would he both stick around in the face of Charlie trying to make him be a nicer person and change his whole attitude towards Lucifer on a time? Why would he do that?

Well. Maybe he would do that if he didn't "hate" Lucifer in the first place, and he actually just felt very strongly about him in a not-very-demonic not-very-scary not-very-appropriate-for-a-terrible-Overlord way?

Basically Lucifer develops the read on Alastor that some r*dioapple shippers have about canon: that this is how Alastor behaves with an infatuation or a crush.

And, y'know. Lucifer is kind of lonely. He's kind of really lonely, actually.

So after Alastor starts being (enforced, mandatory) polite and noncombative with Lucifer, Lucifer turns around and starts being (earnest, well-intentioned) more solicitous and kinder to Alastor. Pretty much the only way he knows how to do that is by Creating And Giving Things, however, which Alastor is going to interpret as a transparently insincere effort to buy his tolerance, and which he will therefore have disdain for immediately.

But he can't openly disdain Lucifer, because Charlie will have a problem with that.
