If we broaden it outside of television…I think Star Wars falls into this, at least the sequel trilogy. Maybe the MCU as well. And I can’t help but think of every band that’s ever complained that their fanbase is mostly women. 5 Seconds of Summer comes immediately to mind.
In general, most white male creators seem to have this massively entitled mindset where they want–and think they deserve–the time, attention, and enthusiasm that creative fandom (i.e. the side of fandom more dominated by women) is known for.
They want our eyes for ratings, our word-of-mouth for free publicity, our metas for social media buzz, and our spending power for merch and cons. But they don’t want us. And they don’t really want the responsibility of telling a story to a thoughtful, engaged audience, regardless of that audience’s demographic makeup. They just want to be praised for whatever schlock they cough up.
And like any other spoiled brat, they will break their toys before they share them.
It goes all the way to the top for kids shows. Toy sales will crash a show. Makes sense, but if those toys are gendered for boys instead of the female viewers, they won’t usually switch up the marketing and move them to the girl aisle. They cancel the show outright.
Mind you it is perfectly possible to make the switch in marketing, but execs would rather throw it all out than have something that doesn’t perform well with male viewers. For example the Rey merch was not expected to be popular, for some reason, there had to be public outcry to get merch of one of the main 3 protagonists. A PROTAGONIST. The fact that she wasn’t a huge part of the 1st launch says a lot already.
And what happened when female fans got too invested in the Sequel Trilogy? The entire writers room didn’t necessarily lash out, but they sure forgot how to behave.

OMG YES. I LOVED Sons of Anarchy, especially the women and then I got to season 6 and it was like - everything was just tossed in the trash? And like, why did Sutter hate that Tara drew tons of attention? That should have been a good thing! He should have been like “Hey folks, this girl’s getting us more viewers, let’s put her in more scenes!” It just doesn’t make sense to me. MEN don’t make sense to me.
The 100 too. I’ll never forget how Jason Rothenberg would attacked female fans on Twitter and mock them in interviews, and then post links to male fan discussions on Reddit to praise and thank them. In his goodbye letter to the show he SPECIFICALLY thanked Reddit and it was so disgusting.
Star Trek from TNG on was also a boy’s club, even though the TOS fans were mostly women. Women, in fact, who literally created modern fandom with their zines. But after TNG it was all, “Women don’t understand Star Trek, only smart men hur dur.”
(though it could probably start to make some sense if you follow the money past audience bases to maybe a couple of investors or like a rich patron … 🤔)
Stooooop I just wrote a masters thesis on this shit. Media creation and distribution is a means by which dominant power structures consolidate their hegemony. Dominantly situated creators get upset when the audience they attract isn’t the audience they wanted, because they view the whole creation and sharing of the fiction as an exercise to sustain kyriarchal conditions that benefit themselves. When the audience is Other, they see it as a failure of those efforts and lash out.
Simply, they’re trying to assert a particular worldview via fiction, and upon getting confronted with something else, begin foot stamping. It’s not just men wanting male attention and gatekeeping. It’s that the fiction in the first place was an attempt to curate dominance and whoopsie! they miscalculated.

By hockey standards, Shane is ancient. He feels it in his bones some days, an aching feeling that isn't quite pain, not anymore, not by his standards.
Four Cups for Montreal. He's nowhere close to that seven he promised himself, as a starry-eyed sixteen year old.
There's a lot of things he'd thought he'd have at sixteen, seventeen, that are just - beyond reach, now.
He should stretch more, he knows he should. But today...
He slides to a slow stop on his side of the red line, swallows heavily, taps his stick against the black shorts just to his right.
His opponent looks up, and Shane swallows. He looks older. Older than Shane remembers, even from their last matchup a few months ago. There's been rumors all year that he was going home, after this season. This might be the last time they line up across from each other at the dot.
"Hollander," he says, and Shane knows his smile doesn't meet his eyes.
"Rozanov."
Ilya Rozanov stares up at him from where he's stretching out his hips. His eyes dart, as they typically have in the last few years, to the corner where the Zamboni comes and goes - where the WAGs and their kids are often invited to stand at the glass and wave at their respective husbands and fathers. Shane knows what - who - he'll see over there, so he keeps his eyes firmly locked on the white sheen of light glancing off Ilya Rozanov's black helmet. Rozanov hums. "No farewell tour goodbyes," he intones after a moment.
"But you are ...?" He leaves it there. Last matchup between Montreal and Boston before Ilya Rozanov returns to finish off his career in the KHL. Harder to score, there. Shane has no fucking idea what the appeal is. He'd never told Shane in so many words that he hated Russia, but there's been an implication, once or twice or twenty times. But.
Well it's not like there's any incentive for him to stay, is there?
He's done everything he set out to do. Set a new record for goals scored, won a few Cups of his own, and he's - there are smile lines around his eyes and one of his side burns is streaked with gray.
Montreal has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and this may be the last time Shane ever tries to defend his impossible shot from the top of the circle.
"Elena's family misses the baby," Rozanov says, with a wry grin, and Shane's gaze can't help but shift to the corner, this time. Two heads of strikingly blonde, curly hair poke up above the boards, jumping to get a look at Cliff Marleau as he shoves pucks through a camera slot, and in Elena Rozanov's arms a third with just a tuft of soft looking hair poking out of a blanket. Shane watches Cliff wiggle his fingers at the baby. He remembers the complete PR turnaround Marleau had had the first time he'd been caught out in public with one of the Rozanov twins strapped to his chest in a baby bjorn.
Shane hadn't spoken a word to anyone for three days after he broke his phone screen with the force of slamming it to the kitchen counter.
"Russia is..." His gaze holds on Shane.
No matter how long it's been, Shane remembers the way those eyes had looked in dark hotel rooms with Ilya inside of him. His gaze is guarded, now. His is the face Shane knows best, with an expression on it now that Shane has never seen.
"...is home," Rozanov finishes, firm, even as he rolls his jaw.
Shane taps his stick against Rozanov's pads again. "Looking forward to kicking your ass one last time, then."
Rozanov smirks. It's almost exactly the one Shane has seen a hundred times before.
Almost.
"I would like to see you try."
When Shane skates away to finish off his warmup routine, Hayden isn't there to ask him what he and Rozanov were talking about. JJ isn't there in the locker room to talk shit about kicking Russian ass. He relaces his skates, and triple checks his stick tape, and he breathes, in and out, and murmurs unheard encouragement to a group of kids who won't be really good hockey players for at least a few more years.
Rozanov scores a natural hat trick and hits 1000 career goals on the second one.
Shane takes a puck to the back of his knee and spends the rest of the season watching games next to his mom on the couch in their cottage.
When Rozanov announces he's signed with a KHL team three days after getting bounced from the second round, Shane isn't particularly surprised.
He does stare at the blank Lily thread he hasn't deleted from three new phones, and then joins Rose for dinner because she's in town between shoots and wants to catch up on her gossip.

A lot of times in media when there is a depiction of an abusive household it’s almost always from the pov of the least favourite child, but Ilya was not the least favourite!
yeah between the two of them Ilya was the talented one who supported the family and gets special attention from important people (see: Svetlana’s dad) and managed to not get a drug addiction or get anyone pregnant. I know in my bones that all of Alexei’s conversations with their dad were along the lines of “you’re a coke addicted fuckup, why can’t you be more like Ilya?”
and yet Ilya’s whole job is to stand there in silence while his dad politely talks shit about him in front of other people, because being the favorite does not save you! if anything it made his dad come down harder on him every time he wasn’t perfect!
