Today Marvel started the hype train on its merry way to screens and minds everywhere with the trailer for Captain America : Civil War, which hits theatres on May 6 2016. Not to be confused with the comic series of the same name, the movie adaptation of Civil War only shares two main similarities. The first being a contract of sorts that puts control over superheroes so they can’t run around with complete free will. The second is that the two sides are led by Cap on the “anti” side and by Tony Stark, a.k.a Iron Man, on the “pro” side. So I’m here to break some of said trailer down and make it easier to understand what is going on. Starting off with …
Location, Location, Location …
The easiest and quickest thing to talk about is, of course, the locations.
First and foremost, the location where Bucky is being held seems to be from the same scene as the police raid. Considering the police team are wearing vests that say “POLIZEI”, we can determine that this is Germany. To add to this, the airport scene contains vehicles which have the words “Flughafen Leipzig-Halle” which is an international airport in Schkeuditz, Germany.
This is the scene of a battle between Cap’s New Avengers and Tony Stark next to buddy Jim Rhodes, a.k.a War Machine, with possible help from cinematic new comer T’Challa, a.k.a Black Panther. Trailer spoiler – It doesn’t seem to end too well for Rhodes as his suit’s power core and mask are ripped away as well as the overall suit taking a fair bit of damage.
We see Cap drop kick yet another armed policeman off of a jeep as well as staring from a window at Bucky who seems to be on the run at this point possibly before the events of Germany, the trailer doesn’t make it clear. This is sunny Puerto Rico and quite obvious with the background building reading “Farmacia”. We also see that Bucky doesn’t have the luxury of a change of clothes .. how sad.
Of course we also have the Avengers’ headquarters. Which seems to have received a few face lifts since we last saw it. This location purely serves to provide a slap in the face to Cap and all superheroes as they are introduced to the Sokovia Accords. Basically a contract of sorts to provide a watchful eye over all superheroes.
We then have the generic downtown locations which will serve as the necessary location for conflict and mayhem, as per all action movies. Which brings us to a seemingly snowy location at the end of the trailer that serves as the literal punching grounds for Cap, Bucky and Stark. The teams are set in the scenes we see quite clearly. Which makes my job easier.
No great action movie is complete without conflict. What better conflict than two seemingly unstoppable forces ? One force being anti nanny is being led by Captain America. The super-soldier who was frozen in time and has demigod like abilities of speed, strength, agility and endurance. The other force is pro nanny and is led by Tony Stark. Super genius who happens to be wearing what looks like the Bleeding Edge armour for this movie. We will get to that particular point later. Two greater friends could not be pitted against each other.
Cap has the help of his New Avengers as well as old friend Bucky. If the casting is anything to go by, we will also have Vision back on our screens. Which is a massive advantage to Cap and could explain the gaping hole in War Machine’s chest where there should be an arc reactor but only if Vision is late to the fight. This side has many advantages including Scarlet Witch who can manipulate the minds of any who stand in their way; Bucky who is practically a lesser Captain America; Falcon who can fight either Iron Man or War Machine in the air and of course, Hawkeye, because every team needs someone who has a finite amount of arrows and no superpowers.
Sharon Carter, a.k.a Agent 13, who was a love interest for Cap in the comics returns but was his protector in Winter Soldier. Originally the younger sister to Peggy Carter, another love interest, she was reintroduced as her niece. After the events of Winter Soldier she enlisted in the CIA and could still be a possible ally to Captain America.
On the other side Stark has his good friend War Machine who is simply a watered down Iron Man with some heavy machine guns; every law enforcement agency on the planet in hunt of rogue superheroes and T’Challa who is an enhanced human just like Captain America and Bucky who also has an entire suit made of vibranium, the same indestructible material as Cap’s shield, considering the metal is native to Wakanda, T’Challa’s home. Ant-Man is also on the cast list and as the comics show, he is on Stark’s side.
Crossbones also returns for this movie and he was left in pretty rough shape at the end of Winter Soldier. Unofficially this means he is on Stark’s side.
General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross returns not only to hand the Sokovia Accords over to the superheroes seeing as he is the US Secretary of State but could also set up future movies to have a Red Hulk. Now I am pretty certain this guy is simply just anti superhero. He is recognised as a villain but will quite obviously play an anti-hero for the sake of helping Stark. What is great about this is that a possible end credits scene could introduce Red Hulk .. or Spiderman.
Lastly we have Black Widow who seems to be on neither side. We see her talking to Captain America in the trailer telling him to stay out of it which get’s the response from Cap that she could arrest him, but we also see her inside a hanger at the airport as it goes boom telling him that he knows what is going to happen and questions if he really wants to punch his way out of it but we don’t see her face off against anyone. It seems that her conscience is weighing heavily.
Not only does the movie focus on a main villain who we have yet to be introduced to according to the official synopsis, friendship comes into question.
This movie has two plot lines that combine. The greater line is that Sokovia happened and that was a major incident. Not only did Stark create the sentient android that caused the mayhem, he also created the Iron Legion who banded together under control to aid Ultron in nearly eradicating all human life as we know it. Both of these related actions would cause Stark to be pro Sokovia Accords as he may still view it has his fault, which it actually is. It was his lust for knowledge that created Ultron in the first place.
This event showed the world just what people like Captain America and Iron Man are capable of. While events like the Battle of New York, which involved Manhattan being invaded by the Chitauri army under the control of the god Loki, and Malekith’s near destruction of London showed the destructive forces that exist, it was the heroes that fixed the situation at hand. With Sokovia, the heroes were the original evil. Stark agrees with the people, stating that without restraint they are no better than the villains.
As rogue heroes, both Falcon and Captain America have their equipment confiscated. We see this in the trailer but it is unclear whether this is early on in the movie or not. What is clear is that at this point Stark had tried to reason with Cap and get him to agree to the Sokovia Accords.
The second story line is that Bucky is a wanted man. It appears that he is being blamed for the explosion we see and is also wanted for obviously being The Winter Soldier in the first place. Essentially he could be seen as a war criminal if all the blame from the events of the last Captain America movie are put on him.
The previously mentioned T’Challa is also known as the Black Panther. In a scene we see him running after Bucky and being pursued by Captain America. This tells us that indeed Bucky is being blamed from the explosion as it seemed to involve politicians. It is very likely T’Challa knew someone at that meeting, possibly someone very close. With this addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe we have a human superhero who is on par with both Cap and Bucky, which is why we see all three at seemingly equal distances running at seemingly equal superhuman speeds.
Captain America will go to the end of the world for his dear friend. It is no surprise that T’Challa is not in sight when we see Iron Man face off against the old American heroes in what looks like a bunker. Cap needed the help of Vision to beat Stark in the comic event as the suit of armour Stark wore was especially tuned to fight Captain America as it knew all of his punches and moves before even he knew. With the information about the introduction of the Bleeding Edge armour, Cap will definitely need the help of his friend and possibly need to fight dirty or find a home advantage.
Finding the home advantage.
This movie puts two of the strongest superheroes against each other, so there will need to be dirty fighting or some advantages to use against each other. While Captain America has the help of Winter Soldier, this will not be enough and while Stark has his allies, it also will not be enough.
The reason why even two superhuman soldiers could be very small in the grand scheme of things when it comes to Iron Man enemies, is because of the MARK MLVI armour. It resembles the Bleeding Edge armour, but could take some of the abilities of the Extremis armour instead. The latter was used in the comic event and Stark revealed that it had recorded every punch Captain America ever threw and knew his next move before even he did. If it takes power design from the BE armour, it will have multiple repulsors to power the suit, ultimately making it more powerful than any human sized suit in the series to date.
Even with a suit of armour that knew Cap better than even himself, Stark had one flaw that would render his armour useless. His power core. Considering Rhodes is missing his very own reactor at the end of the airport fight scene, it brings the comic event to mind. Vision only appears in one single frame in the entire seven volume event. The only reason he does appear is to reach through the back of Stark’s armour and through the power source, rendering it completely useless. Cap nearly kills Stark right away.
Then there is the ability that both Cap and Bucky have of superhuman speed. T’Challa is key to catching both on foot and in places that neither Stark nor War Machine can go in their suits. T’Challa’s very own suit is made from vibranium which means it will stand up to the impact blow from Cap’s shield and even Bucky’s arm. His claws are razor sharp and a formidable weapon making close quarters combat tricky for any adversary. Along with a rather stunning suit, he has heightened capabilities beyond the superhuman physical feats. He has senses that match and beat Spiderman at the best of times making it near impossible to sneak up on him. In the comics Iron Man had to use the Plastic Ghost armour to sneak up on him and that suit had tech to make it incredibly silent including tanks of CO2 to make Stark’s breathing silent.
Captain America also has insight from the inside. Black Widow seems to be giving Cap pointers on whether to stay out of the fight or not. While she may be pro nanny, that doesn’t mean she won’t help out an old friend. That’s the thing about a civil war. You put two enemies of the same kind against each other and neither side is seen as the true victor as you may lost casualties who were once your neighbours. Both Stark and Black Widow show that while they are fighting for the greater good, it may not be that simple on their conscience fighting their comrades. On the flip side, Black Widow could also be of help to Stark as she will know more about what Cap’s intentions are.
It is unclear which side will triumph but it is safe to say it is the pro Sokovia Accords side but not without great loss. They will lose the trust of their friends and fellow Avengers for a time and we may see a rift in the team that may never repair itself; Stark’s tech might come under investigation yet again; there may be a death of a dear friend if they choose to do so; or we may lose a character for a time until they are needed.
It is obvious that the pro side must win. For superheroes to continue to be allowed do what they want without protest and for them to even seen as heroes to the people, the Sokovia Accords must be agreed upon.
