welcome back! this is spectacular news. i was recently talking to someone about a bell curve of overall fanfic quality as a sort of general observation - where the best things you'll read are either from groundbreaking media that challenges you in new ways that expand your awareness or how you think about things. or from dogshit terrible media that challenges you in new ways and forces you to consider what you dislike and how you'd do it better. and i think maybe that extends to the other ways people engage with media. i hope everyone can get their own very special dogshit media. if youre lucky, multiple.

I don't remember if this was mentioned in the fic but did Jian regrow the tooth he made into the talisman for higuruma or did he just lose one of his canines permanently??
he has it again! 'grew back' isn't quite the right terminology, since as a spirit jian is made of energy and it's more like the next time he took form he just had it back. the talisman binding stabilized the fang outside of his physical form, the same w/ other tools we've seen made from his true form's body. he's still got all of those parts, there's just other bits of himself in those same parts elsewhere. the only time he keeps an injury is if it becomes sort of ingrained into his image of himself.
I’m on my 5th reread of Playback and it’s so funny to me how much this fics meddled with my daily life. I can’t even LOOK at Naoya without remembering this fic and the sheer difference between canon and this fic. Like, yes that is babygirl, no I will not elaborate to anyone outside of the ao3 space.
Another funny thing is the way that during my first read of Playback I somehow missed the very BLATANT queer—not undertones—BELLS that were ringing. I was shipping EVERYONE together and was like, “Wow I’m so cringe but it’s just too good,” only to realize later that they were, in fact, all in some nightmarish polycule. It’s fantastic.
