❝ The older I get, the more I see how women are described as having gone mad, when what they’ve actually become is knowledgeable and powerful and fucking furious. ❞
Sirius feigned a gasp at the sight of the ice cream. “You’re almost as bad as me, you family traitor.” he teased. “Is it any good? Obviously nothing’s as good as Flo’s, but… is it any good?” he reached his hand out, obviously intent on trying some now that it was so close.
“Nah, I’m too young and handsome to be nostalgic. Give me at least five more years.” As a group of eleven or twelve year olds ran by, Sirius groaned. “Okay, maybe a little. Hogsmeade trips were the best.”
“Taste for yourself, it might be worth the horrendous title of traitor,” Alice gave him the rest of her ice cream, wiggling her eyebrows because the flavor she’d gotten, a simple Strawberry with both chunks of strawberry and strawberry sauce was amazing. “They were so much fun, you should become an Auror just to go on Hogsmeades trips. Because they were mega groovy going as an adult. Sure, I was responsible of you lot but going older, I think the nostalgia makes it a bit sweeter.”
The memories flooded Alice, it was an odd conversation to be having with Sirius ( only because the two of them were acting as if they were two old and greying seniors, when they both had so much life to live ), but it reminded her that the war had aged them both. Some memories that were only two years away for Sirius ( ten years away for Alice ), felt like lightyears away for her, if Sirius felt anything like did, he’d be able to relate. “It gets all snowy too, while London’s been all grey and muck. Cases have been piling up and I barely made it out of work today, I’m actually thinking of going back soon.”
@legatvm asked me to grab the book nearest to me ( a dance with dragons ), flip to a random page, and use the first line of dialogue I see as a starter ( meme. accepting. )
“I am ready.” Mary curled her fingers around her wand, watched her knuckles grow white under the strain and looked at Alice with intense focus. This was what she liked about her training — the actual training. Dueling with Alice, especially, was both a great learning experience and a whole lot of fun. There was plenty she didn’t like about working at the Ministry, though. She didn’t like being stuck in a place that made her feel unsafe and uncertain about everything, she didn’t like her boss, she didn’t like the paranoia that always lingered in her stomach. “To quote icon Pat Benatar: hit me with your best shot.”
“Fire awayyyyy,” Alice singsonged, though her expression stayed the same. It was imperative, between all the injustice, that Alice train Mary harder than she trained many of the people that had come and gone through the Auror Department’s halls. It was definite bias but she knew for Mary it was also SURVIVAL -- more than it was for some of them. Two people, a blood traitor and a muggleborn, both with targets on their backs for various reason -- on some days, fighting was all they had. Alice knew she had various cloaks of privilege that could shroud her at any time -- so when it came to training Mary she was spared nothing. It was hard to remember she was just nineteen sometimes.
Alice cast a stupefy towards Mary’s foot, “y’know lately I’ve been wishing I learned how to create spells because at this point, some of them are getting OLD, even to cast nonverbally.”
“Oh, God,” Marlene said, raising her hands up immediately, “don’t you dare say that! Last time you were bored we ended up in Berlin, Al.” Laughing, though, she easily made room for Alice - no small feat, given the layers of coat and scarf and hat and gloves Marlene had recently shed. “I haven’t even got one yet, see.” She gestured to the empty table. “What kind of terrible bartender works in this place, huh.”
The bar was plenty crowded, though, and Marlene was content to sit back and let Tom handle the customers before she went up to badger him for a free drink - she worked enough extra hours for him to deserve it. Settling into the old wooden seat, she cradled her chin in her hand and stared pointedly at her friend. “What the hell are you doing drinking here alone, huh? Wasting time before your mysterious “thing” to do?” She made darting sarcastic quotes in the air, grinning.
“I want to go back to Berlin,” Alice stated wistfully, a pout forming on her lips as she pushed her drink in the direction of Marlene, signaling for her to drink the rest of it. She certainly didn’t need the rest, what was the point of drinking on a night she had patrols with the Order? Pushing the drink closer to Marlene, she finally gave her a look, putting her arms up in surrender. “Well now if you take that you’ll be drinking and I won’t be alone,” it was a fair question Marlene asked, there were a many a number of places she could’ve been that night. While she had chosen to meet a contact here, she hadn’t needed to stay.
“Well, I cheated on my Uncle Florean ice cream wise and he just found out so I’m avoiding him, my flat’s too messy right now to deal with and I got off of work late, plus I had to come,” Alice pointed at the random group of old men having their argument. “I had to hear their argument. Reminds me of home a bit. In Galway. I really dunno, maybe I was waiting for you. All those years of Divination have gotten me LOCKED IN with my inner eye. That’s got to be it. Maybe we should start arguing with them.”
though the years had shaped him, james remained rather childlike in his actions. and this day was no exception to the rule. arms were wrapped around two pots, one contained a prickly cactus and the other a blooming flower. suave as ever, the young man made his way to alice’s front door, ringing with his elbow for he could not bare to set down his new and rather precious plants. patiently he waited for the door to swing open, and within moments a bright grin curled across his lips.
“LOOK ALICE!” his excitement was almost unbearable, “I got you a plant ! I even went ahead and named them for us.” without even giving the other the space to say hello, he pushed past them into alice’s home. “this one,” he lifted up the flower, “is called james, so you don’t forget how much you love me!” he paused and then lifted the other pot with the cactus inside, “this one is called alice, because it’s prickly like you and can never die in my care !”
Her day off had been a pressure cooker of anxiety, lack of sleep and planning for the Order. She’d gone on her daily run, sure, but it had done nothing to stop the intensity of thoughts rushing in her mind for hours on end. So, meticulously she worked, until it was James in front of her, as bright as the sun, giving her a warmth she had forgotten to kindle on her own. A smile BLOOMED on her features, a mix of relief and joy, “we’re a family of pricks, I do remember a younger James Potter who was an absolute prick himself but I’ll let it go, for now.”
Going to grab the cactus, Alice propped the other door open with her leg, hoping it would make it easier for James to come inside. Her home, the apartment above Fortescue’s that she’d kicked Florean out of her after she’d gotten her acceptance into the Auror Academy ( it had been a bet, if she got in, she’d get the apartment after graduation ), was littered with all sorts of plants. From Mr. Jenkins the small houseplant she’d had since her Hogwarts years, to Ziggy the long ivy who she’d gotten as a housewarming. It was more indication of how thoughtful James was, she was proud of the man he was turning into.
“I’m so glad we’ve got a cactus now though, thank you, James. What kind of flower is that though? I’m either way out of it or you’ve found an obscure plant I don’t know, which, is something you could easily do, I’m sure. Y’know, I’ve never had a plant named after me before and a plant named James? I’ll make sure to keep them FAR AWAY from each other because I know James can be a little mischievous for Alice’s taste.”
Sirius stood outside Honeydukes, slowly working on a licorice wand. He was supposed to meet up with Peter later on to just shoot the shit, really, but he had gotten a little stir crazy and decided to wander around Hogsmeade aimlessly while waiting. There was, of course, no better place to stop than the classic candy shop, where Sirius picked up a bag of his favorite treats and definitely didn’t for once feel a little too old among the usual Honeydukes crowd.
Mouth full of licorice, Sirius looked up just in time to see a familiar face walk by. “Oi!” he blurted out after them, pushing himself off the wall to catch up, “What’re you doing ‘round here?”
“Hiding out from Uncle Florean and cheating on the Fortescue name with some non Flo mandated ice cream,” she smiled, holding up the small tub of ice cream she was eating from. “He’s furious they’ve come out with ice creams now, even though it’s just the basic flavors, he’s absolutely furious and I’m living for it COMPLETELY.” Even though Hogsmeade was out of the way for Alice, after she’d heard about the new additions to their repertoire, she knew she had to try it for herself.
January was especially cold this year - Marlene experienced an odd sensation of double-vision, almost-deja vu, when she realised that exactly a year ago she had been at Hogwarts, where she had stayed, as usual, over Christmas. They had all been thinking forwards, to their NEWTs, to the flats they would live in, the jobs they would do. It was strange now to be looking back. Hissing to herself in irritation, she wrapped her coat and scarf closer around herself and glowered at every passing stranger. She knew the cold was making the tip of her nose go red; she hated winter. Ducking into the Leaky, she raised a hand in greeting to Tom and headed for an enclosed booth in the back right hand corner; she didn’t have a shift, and that meant she could have a drink with no guilt at all.
“I hate to say this, because the minute I do something’ll happen, but, I’m so bloody bored,” Alice sighed as she found Marlene at the table in the back. Plopping her backpack and jacket, she took the jack and coke she’d been nursing, making herself comfortable in the booth. “I’ve even resorted to drinking, DRINKING, blimey,” taking a sip, she surveyed the room. It was an automatic reaction nowadays, it had been since she’d graduated from the academy -- to scan her surroundings periodically for any trouble. Since it was the Leaky, there were some old men in a corner having a passionate argument, a few people huddled over some butterbeer and some harassing Tom at the bar. “But I can’t do anything too crazy I’ve got something to do later.”

[ AMANDA SEYFRIED ] • [ SHE/HER & THEY/THEM ] | is that [ ALICE FORTESCUE ] , the [ TWENTY-SEVEN ] years old [ SLYTHERIN ] alumnus , walking down diagon alley ? I heard that the last time they had their fortune read, they drew the [ THE HIGH PRIESTESS REVERSED ] , which seems [ UNLUCKY ] . hopefully they won’t come to any harm, considering their recent choice to ally themselves with [ THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX ] . they’ll probably be fine - I know they’re [ AMBITIOUS ] , though apparently they can also be [ COMPARTMENTALIZING ] . what’s the worst that could happen ?

CHARACTER INSPO: allison argent ( teen wolf ), parker ( leverage ), sara lance ( lot ), trish walker ( jessica jones ), clara oswald ( doctor who ), clarke griffin ( the 100, s1&2 of the 100 not any further thx ), margaery tyrell ( asoiaf & got ), sutton braddy ( the bold type ), gaby teller (tmfu )
PLOTS:
DUELING/SPARRING PARTNERS: Dueling and Martial Arts are two things Alice holds dear to her heart. She was a long standing member of the Dueling Club, becoming a captain in her 6th year. She was also Head Girl, and even if she doesn’t like you as a person, if you duel well, she’ll duel you. She loves learning different people’s styles, how they tick, how they duel so she can become more versatile & aware of her own dueling to become better at it. It would be amazing to have someone who would duel against her but also physically spar against her – in fact, I could easily see her teaching fellow Order members how to do both.
RIVALS: Maybe it’s been since school, maybe it’s now at the Ministry, maybe it’s between Order members, but there’s something about this person that brings out Alice’s competitive side. Maybe they’re two sides of the same coin, maybe they just hate each other’s guts, either way, it’s something that’s remained true throughout the years and while Alice hates it, she still engages!
ORDER CONTACTS: Maybe they’re not part of the Order yet and they support it, maybe they just give info here and there to Alice. Maybe they’re a double agent for the Order and Alice is their handler! Who knows!
PLANTING SEEDS IN A GARDEN YOU NEVER GET TO SEE: Gervais Fortescue’s murder was a shock to many, shaking the Auror department to the core. Alice is a legacy, comes from a legacy of Aurors in France, but it was Gervais’ work within Wizarding England ( then, his research spanning he globe ) that made him the monument he was. Some people think this is why Alice got into the Auror Academy, some people may see her father and not her when they look at her, maybe they hated her father and in turn, hate Alice. Maybe they’re disappointed in her father because he was a pureblood who decided to become a muggle sympathizer. Bonus points for anyone who wants to include a connection to Gervais’ research!
FELLOW LGBTQ PEOPLE: Maybe there are gay wizarding clubs, maybe they’ve gone to some of the muggles ones Alice has gone to, maybe they were in school with her and heard an offhand comment about Alice’s attraction to not just men, but really, girls and anyone else as well. Maybe, like some LGBT people, they just gravitated towards each other. Maybe they know her through her Uncle Florean, an iconic bi himself, who knows.
WORK FRIENDS: Work! Friends! Maybe they’re in different departments and met up through work, maybe they were in line at the same coffee shop going to work, something.
WE’RE NOT LOVERS, WE’RE JUST STRANGERS: There are many outlets that Alice uses and while Alice isn’t one to really crave crave sex, she is an escapist, using people as an escape on occasion. For whatever reason, Alice and this person had a thing going, maybe Alice found herself getting emotionally attached, maybe they were already friends who started this thing, but the fact remains – Alice is not looking to fall in love. Maybe she started to get feelings, and started to be colder, maybe your character did, maybe it’s not messy at all, maybe there’s potential for it, maybe they’re using each other for whatever reason – whether Alice suspects them of having information she needs vice versa. I would prefer this plot to be gay, to be honest! That’s why I brought the Halsey song into this!
DO I WANNA KNOW?: Two people who dance around each other, who know a deep truth about the other, but are afraid of taking the plunge. Whatever it is, the game of it all, has been a fun & tempting distraction. I don’t know a reason for this but we can make one! Could tie into rivals.
SMOKING/HERBOLOGY BUDDY: Self explanatory. Alice uses it to sometimes medicate herself like the usage of any other plant or potion! While she does usually like to stay Sober and Aware, she’s also increasingly aware of how helpful cannabis is to her. She prefers it to drinking so if your character is cool with having a smoke as opposed to having a drink, Alice is your person.
FRATERNITY, AMBITION, POWER: Open to ANY former members of Slytherin house. I’ve always imagined that they’ve had a strong Alumni network, even though Alice was not the most ‘traditional’ of Slytherins, she definitely one to look out for many that are more so like her. I see Alice being particularly active in this to really try to help rehab her houses image as well as just to be active in the house she loves so much.
