She didn’t spend much time doing what a lot of other society girls did. For many pureblood young women, the main goals were to get married and move the family name forward, and Alessa was not interested in any of it. She spent her time learning about magical beasts, finding out which ones were a danger and taking them down when they were a threat. Alessandra knew that this was what her life was meant to be, stained red with the blood of beasts and warmed with the heat of battle. She liked the idea that this was going to be her future, that this was what was waiting instead of the icy-cold life of a perfect pureblood woman.
She was pushing this goal forward that afternoon, her stack of court cases abandoned for the moment as she studied and made notes in Newt Scamander’s book. She knew that she was going to end up falling in a very different position in terms of her opinion on putting down dangerous magical beasts, so she didn’t put much stock into his personal asides, but the information he had on different monsters was invaluable. Alessa was sitting in front of Fortescue’s with his book laid open in front of her, quizzing herself on the information within.
The idea of marriage was, frankly, the furthest thing from Alessandra’s mind these days. It was customary for the Avery matriarch to take their position at the age of 27—two short years from then, Alessa would be in charge of everything she had been training for since she could walk. Somehow, that wasn’t as comforting to her as she hoped it would be—she thought that she would start feeling ready by now, more like a leader, but she didn’t know how she was going to do it with the grace and elegance that her mother displayed.
A man seemed like the least likely solution to any of this—more of a complication than anything else—but Alessa trusted her mother, and her mother had gotten an arranged marriage to her father when she was 25, and they were the happiest couple she knew. Of course, among pureblood circles, the bar for that could be pretty low. That was the reason why she had even agreed to this dinner int he first place, and she had sat through it being as polite and charming and demure as her mother had told her to be. There was no need to show all her cards yet.
As was usual with these types of arrangements, by the time dinner was through, their parents meaningfully excused themselves, sherry in the lounge and cigars in the den, all very 1950s and passe. For all the power her mother held, she was surprisingly traditional about some things, and Alessa supposed this was one of them.
She didn’t particularly mind Cyril’s company. In fact, he’d been good company every now and again when they had seen each other at society functions, both of them at the same debutante ball (though Cyril had not been her escort, she had certainly noticed him) and always at the all the same flashy weddings. He was exactly what her parents wanted to see all through dinner, and it would have been easy to just believe what she saw, but she was a skeptical person at heart.
Alessa cocked her head to the side as she regarded him, the two of them shooed out of the house to walk around the quiet, wealthy neighborhood her parents resided in. “Now that we’re out of earshot of my mother, you really don’t need to bother with all that Alessandra nonsense. Alessa is fine.” Worried that she might fidget too much, she dropped her hands behind her back and linked her pinkies together. “Your turn to say something your parents might not want to hear,” she teased lightly.
okok it’s spike again and this is the last one (for now). you know the drill, more info under the cut!

> alessa was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. anything she wanted, she got. she barely had to cry before she had a crowd of people trying to fix whatever it was that had upset her so, even if it was nothing. she was spoiled, and she wore it well.
> the avery family has always turned to their women in order to carry their power forward. ever since alessa’s great, great grandmother, the avery family decided that the patriarchal structure that had nearly driven them to bankruptcy and ruin was no longer useful. they flipped the roles, and now they are back to being a highly respected pureblood family.
> alessa has two older brothers, but because she’s the only daughter, the power in the family is soon to transfer to her, where she’ll be referred to as the “matriarch” of the family and assume leadership
> for most families, aless is sure, it’s not so much of a ritualized inheritance, but the avery family has always stood on ceremony. on top of that, the avery family has maintained their influence not just because of their wealth or blood status—the avery family has a famous history of being monster hunters
> the matriarch of the family is a model for monster hunters to follow—the avery family holds influence in this community, and whatever the matriarch of the avery family does, the others follow.
> it’s a lot of pressure. alessa is fairly certain she’s up to the job.
> for now, however, her mother still occupies the position, and alessa can continue to study and train for the day she’ll assume the role. ever since hogwarts, she’s been a champion dueller—and she spends most weekends keeping her skills sharp. on top of that, it’s mandatory for all young women in their family to be skilled fighters, and alessa has passed all those tests with flying colors.
> when she’s not fulfilling obligations to her family, she’s working—a defense attorney for those unlucky few death eaters who get caught, alessa has become notorious for taking on clients at the wizengamot that even the most callous defense attorneys refuse to touch. she has a responsibility with her work, as well.
> in what little free time she gets, she’s constantly pushing the boundaries with her parents. her mother has been begging her to “settle down” and be a “proper young woman,” but alessa gets so little freedom elsewhere, she’ll take the inch she’s given and run a mile.
