character development questions

text | alex & zoey
Zoey: You think you're hilarious but you're not.
Zoey: Just answer a phone call every now and then and I won't have to worry so much about you.
Alex: I’m only this way for you, you should know.
Alex: I’m sorry for worrying you. I promise that I’m okay. Busy but okay.
Alex: how are you?
text | alex & zoey
Zoey: Do you answers calls or even listen to your voicemails anymore? Or is it just me that you choose to ignore.
Zoey: I swear, if there was ever an emergency I would do better to yell into the void than get a call back from you.
Zoey: And no, I'm not being needy.
Zoey: But I would like a text back to let me know that you're still alive or if I need to send someone around to poke your body with a stick.
Alex: hello, you’ve reached the voicemail box of Alexander Hazelton, recently deceased. Your connection to the hereafter is tenuous at best. Please try again later.
deanbailleres:
Dean’s eyes squinted at the sun as he followed Alex to a random spot, grateful they weren’t smack dab in the middle of a sweaty crowd. Holding his basket of nachos, he turned to look towards the parade. “I’d think ex-boyfriends have some rights,” he mused, picking at a chip with a jalapeno on it before putting it in his mouth, crunching as his teeth chewed. “Appropriate. I’m the last person who would’ve lectured you on appropriate,” Dean exhaled, an amused laugh escaping. “But yeah, kinda wish I retired earlier, but it is what it is. It helps with my job now, though. I don’t think I’d know what to do otherwise,” he cleared his throat. He’d completed a degree in engineering, and it’d helped immensely, but he didn’t know if it was what he wanted to do. Dean often wondered if he would ever know. “What about you? How’s teaching the young minds of today? Probably requires a certain level of patience.”
Life was funny sometimes. Unexpected things happened, but somehow they seemed to work out. Alex wasn’t sure that he believed in Fate. He, for sure, believed that current decisions influenced future paths, even if the smallest ones. The butterfly effect in as many words. He was nearly convinced that all paths led to an individual’s true destination, regardless of how circuitous those paths were. It was just difficult to know that destination in the midst of it all. “Do you ever regret it,” he asked, though he wasn’t sure what kind of answer he expected in response. “Enlisting so young, I mean. Just kind of seems like a big decision for a kid to make.” Like finding yourself in love and committing to a relationship at the age of eighteen.
Heat crept up Alex’s neck at the thought of it. “Hmm... it’s definitely a calling,” he replied vaguely as he settled the bowl of chips on his outstretched legs. “Honestly, I’m not really into teaching. Especially not the intro classes. Most people take those to fulfill elective credits and couldn’t care less about the subject content. I can’t complain about the graduate students, but if I had it my way, I’d be out there in the field, unearthing secrets of long lost civilizations.” He scooped a few of the nachos up and shoved them in his mouth, a half smile on his face when he realized that he probably looked a bit uncultured. “You forget all about eating like an adult when you’re raising a kid,” he explained. “So, how about you? In a perfect world, what would your life look like?”
set: november 14th, afternoon location: myriad cafe availability: closed | @alexhazeltons
It had been awhile she hadn’t seen Alex. She needed something less complicated than encountering Castor while going through a walk with Loki, and then everything Zakary had thrown at her about himself. She just needed to visit someone that didn’t have a baggage to place over her shoulders. Focusing on caring and on everyone elses’ issues wasn’t on her plans and yet, there she was: worrying about Zakary, worrying about her past. She sighed, thankful that she had Alex number and texting him to meet her at the address she sent: the Myriad Cafe.
She was there before him, focused on her phone for a second before she finally noticed that familiar figure. Waving at him, she tried to share a response that should be noticed as a nonchalant comment, or merely her teasing him about how little they had seen each other lately. “And you’re alive, that’s great. I was starting to forget your face. And you are so good looking that it’s almost sinful.”
Charlie was the kind of friend that Alexander could count on to not change. Whenever they spent time together, they discussed books that they were currently reading or ones that they were thinking about reading. It was simple, always expected. Outside of that, they barely saw one another. So, when the text message came asking to hang out, Alex was more than a little surprised, though he was happy to oblige.
It took no time at all for Alex to recognize the familiar waving figure. With a small wave of his hand, Alex moved in the direction of the table she’d been selected. He’d been on the verge of apologizing for running a few minutes late -- the byproduct of having a young child, he was convinced -- when her words registered. “Thanks,” Alex mumbled, an embarrassed smile on his face. He was sure that he was blushing. “It’s good to see you alive and well too.”

🍰 🎠 📚
get to know my character.
🍰 - What is their favorite type of dessert or sweet?
Pineapple upside down cake.
🎠 - Your character is at the carnival. What kinds of rides or games do they check out to entertain themselves?
You know those dumb games that involve throwing the rings or fishing in order to win fish? Yeah, those. Also rides like the pirate ship or alien invasion that are thrill seeking without involving being too far off the ground because Mr. Redwood over here has a minor fear of heights.
📚 - Does your character read?
If Alex could spend the rest of his life reading, he would.
🍺😈😂
get to know my character.
🍺 - Cheers! What is your character’s favorite alcoholic beverage? What was the last thing they got smashed off of?
Alex isn’t much of a drinker to be quite honest. He’s much too responsible to get wasted drunk. That, and the fact that he worries way too much to be able to actually lose control... but yeah, when he’s drinking, he’s a simple man. A beer works fine. He’s drinking more for the social aspect rather than the taste.
😈 - What’s your character’s favorite cuss word?
“Frog.” He’s a dad, okay? No cursing around the mini.
😂 - Your character is moved to tears. What’s a kindness that another showed to them in the past?
Honestly? Alex is a simple guy. His love languages are words of affirmation and quality time. So, tell him that he’s doing a good job of raising his kid and spend some time with him. It’s enough.
🚼, 📚, 💢, 😇
get to know my character.
🚼 - Does your character have or want kids?
Alex is the father of one child; his daughter Mira, currently 6, almost 7, is the absolute light of his life. In his eyes, she’s the most perfect child on the planet -- she’s curious, bright, empathetic, and generally all of the things a parent could want in a child. I think a few things go into Alex’s view of Mira -- the fact that he wasn’t present for her birth since he was out of the country on a research trip, and the fact that he’s been his primary and sole caregiver for a few years now. She’s the most important person in his life and he would give anything to see her live a happy, healthy, and fulfilled life, whatever that may mean for her. That being said, Alex can’t imagine the possibility of more kids. If he were to marry someone who has kids or wants kids, he’d gladly accept them no questions ask, but actively pursuing the idea of more children is not something that Alex is currently doing. There are simply too many things about Mira’s experiences and his lack of experiences that worry him (re: puberty as well as the fact that he’s human while she’s a half witch). So, while he’s well aware that he’d be a phenomenal father to another child, he doesn’t see it in the cards for him right now.
📚 - Does your character read?
If Alex could spend the rest of his life reading, he would.
💢 - What frustrates your character more than anything?
Not having the knowledge required for any given situation. This could be in the classroom when a student asks a question, -- it sends him deep into research mode so that he’s able to answer said question at a later date -- in parenting, or even in his love life. Alex is just so used to being able to being able to solve problems that when a situation arises that he can’t solve or that he has no expertise, he becomes frustrated.
😇 - What was your character’s last good deed?
Paid for the coffee for the person behind him in line at the cafe.
🌞🌜, 📚, ⌚
get to know my character.
🌞🌜 - Is your character an early bird or night owl? What makes them that way?
Night owl, by nature. Alex feels his most energetic in the evening. Unfortunately, given the fact that Mira is the exact opposite and he works a 9-5, he’s forced to be an early bird. He hates it.
📚 - Does your character read?
If Alex could spend the rest of his life reading, he would.
⌚ - Is your character punctual or procrastinator?
Alex, a procrastinator? There aren’t two less related things in existence.
Sahid wants to know 💋, Topher wants to know 😄, Raine wants to know 📼 , Zakary wants to know 🌎
get to know my character.
💋 - Your character was just kissed by someone they can’t stand. Why and how did it happen?
Stutter and sputter like the engine of a dying car simply because he wouldn’t have the words to explain what just happened. Also, blush. Because it’s what he does.
😄 - What has ever made your character laugh so hard that they almost passed out?
Alex has these fits of laughter every now and then. Trouble is that the thing he’s laughing at is never as funny as he thinks it is. So, let’s be honest, it was probably some nerdy joke or the other.
📼 - If an interrogation tape emerged regarding a recent interview with your character, what are they being questioned for?
Eating the last cookie and forgetting to throw the container away. Oops. He’s not perfect, he’s just a human.
🌎 - If money were no object, where would they live and what would they do with their life? (Ex: entrepreneur, playboy, philanthropist, etc)
What he’s doing now. He absolutely loves anthropology. Though he’d prefer to be doing more traveling and on the ground researching than being in a classroom teaching. Teaching is great, but there’s nothing quite like being there at the moment of discovery. As for where he’d live: Egypt.

😒 🍰 💒
get to know my character.
😒 - “Ugh! Not him/her/them/it again.” How does your character react to annoying people?
He has absolutely no poker face; so if Alex is annoyed with you, you can bet that it’ll be written all over his face. He’s a nice guy though, so chances are he won’t act on the annoyance. Unless, of course, the person in question is being ridiculously obnoxious, in which case he’ll either call them out on it or remove himself from the situation.
🍰 - What is their favorite type of dessert or sweet?
Pineapple upside down cake.
💒 - Does your character want marriage or a lifelong commitment?
Yes and no? He loves the idea of being fully committed to a person. He loves having someone to rely on, to come home to, to do the romantic things with. But he’s been married before, and it didn’t work out. The idea of a lifelong commitment is one that Alex is hesitant about because he knows that people change and drift apart from one another and that’s a natural part of life. So, for Alex, a “for now” commitment is more than enough. If he’s in a relationship with someone, he hopes that they would feel comfortable enough to be open and honest should the relationship come to its natural end. The last thing he’d want is to be stuck in something that no longer serves all involved because he doesn’t want to hate a person he once loved. Then, he has to consider the impact that a relationship would have on Mira, which is why he’s so hesitant to bring anyone home. So, yeah, it’s complicated.

Listening to Alex clearly gush over his daughter was sweet. She was happy he was happy. “Nothing wrong with being biased,” she chuckled. “She is your kid. I’d be more concerned if you weren’t in complete awe of her.” It was like listening to James talk about Maya. And mostly it just made her happy to see parents actually enjoy being parents. A small smile appeared on her face, trying not to feel awkward about the comment. “Oh…” she uttered out softly. “No, I mean, it’s fine.” Elizabeth didn’t feel like she deserved the concern though. “Thank you, Alex. To be honest, if we were having this conversation a year ago, I don’t think I could say I was doing all that well…” It felt like a weird thing to admit when they weren’t close anymore, but she had lost him as a friend before because of all her hiding. Pausing, she took a sip of her coffee. “For what it’s worth, I’m glad you’ve been doing well all this time too.”
Alex nodded. He wasn’t quite sure where the conversation was supposed to go now that they’d taken care of the formalities. They’d asked about one another’s current states, had expressed apologies for losing their friendship in the difficulties of life. Now where were they supposed to go? “I’ll be honest,” Alex began, fingers drumming out a beat on his thigh, “I’m not entirely sure where we go from here.” There was a slightly embarrassed twist to his lips as he coughed out a laugh. “I think it’s been so long since I’ve made new friends. Or reconnected with old friends, for that matter. Should I ask you about your favorite book? Or what you’re currently watching? Pretty sure talking about favorite foods is a dead end conversation.” The more the words tumbled out of him, the more embarrassed he felt to the point that he was sure he was blushing. “I ramble a lot when I’m embarrassed,” he admitted. “Sorry about that.”
