looking at the huge blocks these buildings become make me feel ill. i think a lot about human social organization, and huge block buildings feel like such a physical manifestation of it. about who gets to live where, in what quality, over what area.
also that these huge blocks are basically privatizing a huge amount of space, both in the surrounding sidewalk area, and by creating real estate space in the air. and of course there’s going to be like 1, 2 doors for the whole thing, which is also weird to think about in terms of like, who can be your neighbor, or a passerby, by limiting that space of interaction to beyond a keycoded door. and the safety factor of not being able to let community form organically.
after a year in this city, i’m still regularly horrified, and yet used to my horror, of all the new construction sites, following the pattern of lot to hole in the ground to frame to building with unreal speed. cranes and other huge machinery, unthinkably deep and measured holes in the ground are regular. and also feel pretty helplessly swept up in it. like when i see all the amazon / techtoilet people waiting around denny for the bus that is already packed full, and they are in a crowd like 3 lines deep, it’s like watching the tide of history. like, so many things feel like an epitomizing anecdote about this time.
if i had time resources grants etc, it would be interesting to collect data on sites in neighborhoods, then see which and how many companies are contracted, and then something something about how many actual holding companies there are.
