i genuinely believe that schools need to immediately expel students for using gen AI & blacklist them from any other program for at least five years, because i don’t want to fucking deal with these useless twerps being credentialed in any field whatsoever. these fucking people are going to be your lawyers. your healthcare professionals. these people who are too fucking dumb to read, who would rather blindly trust a glorified predictive text generator than spend five minutes studying or thinking on their own.
at this point, if you didn’t receive your credentials before 2020, it is infinitely safer for me to assume that your degree is hollow, your work is fake, and your knowledge nonexistent unless & until proven otherwise.
we are genuinely not mean enough about this.
there’s always someone getting huffy because THEIR braindead shortcut is justified, or shamelessly abusing the entire concept of disability accommodation to argue that substituting chatgpt for all independent thought & intellectual labor is a win for “accessibility.” we need to start shunning these people and bullying them out of public life, especially if they hold any position of responsibility.
#i asked a med student to look something up #(a time-honored method of clinical teaching) #and he typed it into chat gpt and turned his phone around to show me the answer
christ almighty. these people are going to be responsible for life or death decisions.
and they don’t have any fucking brains, because they have signed over all intellectual effort to chat gpt, so your life is in the hands of someone who can’t even be fucked to look up information from a verifiable source.
Complete disagree. I got into why but TLDR: I am completly against GenAI in studies AND work and op is right to be concerned, suggesting to penalise students with expulsion/shame and bullying these people is the complete wrong way to go about it, and we have other options.
I don't support chat gpt or anything gen AI and I understand wanting for it to be gone, but a punitive approach is not the answer. I also wanna say for the record I have never used generative AI, neither in my work nor when I was in school, and this is not a defense of it that shit sucks. I just think there are absolutely solutions to like ban chat gpt (the software) make the technology super incovenient or expensive to access, like it literally takes a huge amount of power to keep it running we could imagine a world where you can just shut that shit down.
In general I totally understand op's frustration and exasperation with ppl using it to study, I will say from my own experience in the work place it has been extremely dire to see it pushed forward massively including for stuff like health/policing/justice.
As to why students even use chat gpt and what ppl can do about it (outside of shutting that shit down) think it's interesting to look at why ppl plagiarize in the first place. It's a bit of a leap to think the use of AI arises from the same reason as ChatGPT but since op seems to want to treat the students the same way I think it's an okay leap to make (for the record I am also against kicking ppl out for plagiarism for the same reasons).
I found this study which is a lit review of the research done so far, I read a few other papers as well but ngl a lot of them use a really small sample size so I feel like an analysis of those is slightly more fool proof, you can access it here : Cheating and plagiarism in higher education institutions (HEIs): A literature review (a lit review is an overview of published litterature about the topic)
It outlines 5 reasons for plagiarism: individual, social, cultural, institutional, and technological factors
I m not gonna paraphrase the whole study but it sorts of what it says on the tin, individual can be from lack of motivation/management of workload or personality, social like classroom environment and such, cultural stuff like pressure/fear of failure/perfectionism etc, and technological is the access to technologies making it easier (like AI)
A lot of these are things the students suffer from, not cause. Issues with their environment, peers, cultural backgrounds or other. I'm not saying that ppl are destined to cheat, obviously we re all individuals, but I think we have a ton of other levers to try to pull (like for instance lowering the consequences of failure, decreasing competition, increasing time to do assignements and mentoring, easier convertion into other sectors etc) before we decide :yeah this shortcut someone tried to use, potentially to face the mounting pressures of school/uni (costs, time, employability, motivation etc) means that they no longer have access to education, surely this will not backfire.
Also: its implied but I'll say it aloud: your incentives to use Ai/plagiarise/engage in other academic dishonesty are much greater if you are marginalised, you will have less time to complete assignements, will lack proper support and ressources, there is inherently more consequences to failing a year and you are also in the first place more likely to be thought to be cheating or plagiarizing. Suggesting the removal from these ppl (hi it s me) from education is like making them pay twice: they are held to a much higher standard/require much more effort to compete with their peers, and this might directly produce their expulsion.
I think ppl understand that as like oh yippee that means that GenAI increases access and like no it s literally terrible bc stuff like writing papers/reading and understanding document has a point u will not be qualified to do ur job if u use it, but the issues with AI and its wide adoption are much more systemic (ie why is everyone encouraged to use ai all the time, why is academia and learning so hard to access and to stay into, why is getting a job so hard) than individual based, and a punitive solution that focuses on the individual is unlikely to work
Hi, looking for some illustration work at the moment, send me a message if you'd like some art for your project. You can also email me at [email protected] Thanks!
Thanks to everyone's support, we've officially made our final donation to the Middle East Children's Alliance of 4,437.34 USD! We really appreciate the funding for this project to donate SO MUCH to such a great cause.
Please see under the cut for our donation receipt. Once again, thank you to everyone who contributed to this project, whether as a creator or as a customer!
Anyway, the pet scams and the other scams weren't known to be scams because they "seemed like scams" or because they "looked weird". They were known to be scams because if you reverse-searched the images, you found them stolen from different social media platforms with conflicting stories.
The same is done extensively with every Gazan gofundme, and the ones that don't hold up to scrutiny aren't vetted. (For starters, the vetting process is much more involved than reverse image search.)
It's pitiful that people are crying "what happened to online safety and internet literacy?" and in the same breath saying "this is clearly a scam because they used emojis". That's the opposite of scam-busting.
By all means don't donate if you're nervous, but don't start claims of a "scam-ring" or that these are the same as the pet scammers because "the wording is off".
I don't have the words to describe to you how painful it is that my close friends whom I chat with in our mother tongue (in which they are much more eloquent than the asks that are machine translated for YOUR benefit) and fear for their lives constantly and cry at the footage they share with me - only for someone to slander them because, I don't know, you didn't like the tone of their messages.
