the more i watch the borderlands 4 gamescom panel the more im confident ill like the game. their approach comes off more focused than BL3, doing fewer things but giving them more depth. the new planet concepts already have much better diversity. fewer but richer characters. less often but appropriately timed jokes. and i /think/ they acknowledged how the RPG stats undercut the actual game mechanics.
ive never shared my BL3 critique on here, but i'll say there are very real things that BL2 does better than its sequels. and yes that includes the gameplay. which isnt very popular to criticize so i really hope gearbox sifted through... but theyre artists so they probably share a lot of that critique anyways lol
i think... borderlands 4 will be good :)
enjoyed the gearbox PAX panel. a lot of good insight
-vault hunters are the HEROES, will feature in cutscenes and story is reactive to them
-focused cast, lots of new some old
-better paced jokes
-most visually diverse borderlands game they've worked on
-nice concept art
-using unused gameplay concepts (they referenced left handed guns, so I think they're talking about grappling hooks/jetpacks)
feels like what I wanted from BL3. Evolving storytelling and gameplay like what TPS did for 2. We'll see, but this gives me a lot of reason to look forward to what they're cooking.
another thing. I kinda love how less intense the values are in the concept art? it's a cool way to channel BL1 vibes while still being colorful.
also it's a good chance to make enemies/gameplay objects stand out. Like how TF2/Valorant keeps characters and maps at distinct values to keep gameplay readable
Here's a list of stuff they mentioned and talked about during the showcase today in case anyone missed it or wanted it written down!
Borderlands 4 concept art!!! A more 'tech' world is awaiting us.
