Chapter 1: Beautiful
(A/N: some of the songs will be inner monologued at parts so there’s purposely no speech marks. Or some songs will be taken out fully.)
September first, 1930.
Dear diary,
I think im a good person, I believe theres good in everyone, but, here we are, first act of the night and I look around at these people around me, some ive known all my life, some since i started working. I look around and ask myself, what happened? I sigh, turning away from the mirror to tug on my cream flapper dress as I hear the folks chanting at the bar.
“Tart, slut, whore, floozy, hussy, doxy”
I inhale sharply adjusting the dress straps. We were so tiny, happy and shiny, playing tag and getting chased.
“Freak, jezbel, she-cat, scarlet”
Singing and clapping, laughing and napping, baking cookies and eating paste.
“Trashy, low-down, plain jane.”
Then we got bigger, that was the trigger, like a raid on chinatown. I turn to walk down the small corridor towards the side of the stage accidentally bumping into one of the musicians “oh! Sorry!” I quickly mutter out. Welcome to the show, this isnt my show, this is a catacomb. Hold your breath and count your days ill be out of here soon.
“Low-class”
Broadway will be paradise if im not gone too soon. But i know, i know life can be beautiful, i pray, i pray for a better way. If we changed back then, we could change again. We can be beautiful. I watch from the side as a drunk shoves past another patron. Just not today.
“Minx, slattern, vixen, Harlot, harlot, harlot”
Things will get better, ill be free of this fettor, as soon as the spotlight finds my face, wake from this haze, take center stage then i can escape this town. Dream of velvet-draped stages and orchestras ablaze.
“Watch this.” A voice says off to my side but i barely register it as i stare out into nothingness.
Fight the urge to light a match and set this dumpster fire ablaze- I get bumped into and fall to the floor.
“Oops, pardon me my dear” a rough voice says, not even asking for my hand before hoisting me back up put of nowhere.
“Lou Gray. Third year bartending and eighth year tripping dancers and being a pest” I accidentally mutter under my breath not realising i said it aloud.. until..
“What did you say to me tramp?” Lou sneers at me, holding my wrist tightly in a bruising grip.
“o-ow.. u-uhm nothing!” I laugh nervously giving him my best innocent look, he grumbles and throws my hand down walking off as i rub my wrist seeing the red mark encircled around it like a cuff.
But I know, I know, life can be beautiful. I pray, I pray, I pray For a better way. We were kind before. We can be kind once more. We can be beautiful...
I feel someone tap my shoulder and i swerve startled “Ah! Oh hey Nellie!” “Hey~!” She smiles at me. Nellie porter, my best friend since diapers, she has a huge heart, ‘round here thats not enough. “Still on for pictures t'night?”
“Yes sweets, youre on popcorn duty” i smile
“i got tickets to the jazz singer” she says happily, a laugh making its way into her words.
“oho again? You must have it memorised by now” i laugh with her
“what can i say? Im a sucker for a good talkie." she smiles at me before jumping at the sudden appearance of another male-
"Nellie Porker, if you wanna fit through that door lay off the pies at the diner"
Eddie Nolan, trumpet players son. Hes the brightest bulb at the speakeasy- which is kinda like calling bootleg gin classy.
I step between Eddie and Nellie "What is wrong with you?"
"Im sorry are you talking to me sweetheart?" Eddie pinches my cheek as Lou comes beside him I huff and slap his hand away.
"My friend Eddie's speakin' to ya sweetheart" Lou says, backing up eddie as if he needs it. Gods these two are unbareable.
"What gives you the right to pick on my friend?" I question, mind you its not a ladies place to question a man but i sha'nt let them pick on poor nellie, just because shes not slim like the rest of us. "Look at you- just a bandstand blowhard waitin' to flop, a future coat check boy begging for tips." I snap, making the others at stage-side turn to look towards us.
"Theres a pimple on your nose doll." he smirks, before turning away as everyone laughs. Damn this place to hell and back I swear as soon as I get the chance im out of here.
Dear diary, why?
"Why do they hate me?" a woman asks her gentleman at one table.
"Why dont I fight back?" a beat up young lad asks, leaning against the wall on the far side
"Why am I such a dolt?" Another asks, sat by himself glancing at a table of women, friends.
Why?
"Why wont he court me?" another woman asks herself, watching as the man she's with walks over to the mens room.
"Why did I wear this?" a man mutters as his fellow friends laugh at his choice in clothing.
"Why do I cry myself to sleep?" another man grumbles, this time the piano player.
Why?
"Somebody hug me, somebody fix me, somebody save me, send me a sign god, give me some hope here something to live for." multiple voices beg out from around the speakeasy, but then the door opens and in strolls three women.
Then there's the Beatrice's. They float above it all.
Three women in dresses step in, a red , a yellow and a green , all silk
Beatrice Holloway, her daddy's got shows, owns half the marquees.
Holloway in the yellow waves at a group of men off to her side.
Beatrice Lang, programs the paybill, no spark of her own, but her mother brought the gowns.
Lang in the green pulls out her compact mirror, dabbing on a bit of powder onto her face.
Beatrice Monroe, the almighty, she's a legend in the spotlight.
Monroe in the red winks and blows kisses at Lou and Eddie, Lou behind the bar and Eddie sat on the stool swirling some bourbon like he's the kingpin. He's not.
The Beatrices are pure satin, never shaken, never scorned, I would give anything to be like that.
"I'd like to be their fella." one man, a scruffy one clearly works hard labour on the daily, ladies like the Beatrices wouldn't come ten foot within his radius.
"That would be beautiful" I murmur
"If I sat among them, fellas wouldn't look away" a woman, green with envy sighs dreamily.
"So beautiful.." another woman says softly
"I would like them to be nicer..." Nellie says hopefully beside me, I pat her shoulder
"That would be beautiful." I say smiling softly at her.
"I'd nab a Beatrice, lock her in a cellar and let the mice have their fun." the regular drunkard says making all of us sigh and glare at him, the Beatrice's giving him scornful looks.
The beatrices go up to the bar, Lang orders first;
"I'll have a pink Lady." Lang orders, clicking her fingers at Lou, Monroe scoffs at her friend.
"Grow up Beatrice, Pink Lady's for girls!" she huffs, folding her arms
"Beatrice, what you need is a real tonic." Holloway jumps on into the conversation too, both of them mocking Lang. They begin walking off, Lou being too infaturated with the women doesn even notice them not paying, until the speakeasy manager, Vincent "Vinny" Moreau, calls them out on it.
"Beatrice, Beatrice and Beatrice, maybe the music drowned out the cash register, but your tab's still due." He says gruffly, folding his tattooed arms.
"Beatrice says she's parched, we're just lending her a hand" Monroe says, clearly thinking her charm would work. It didn't.
"Not without a coin you're not. a night behind the bar," Vinny grunts.
"You act like you don't know who we are!"
"I'm more important then anyone in this joint!"
"You can't tell us what to do we own the marquees!" The girls start arguing, shouting over each other to get their point across. Its now or never, if I'm going to at least get the tiniest shot of their recognition I have to act now.
I pat Nellies shoulder before springing forward in my flapper dress, I quickly walk over, my heels banging against the wood panelling of the floor. "Excuse me, Vinny? I can pay off their tab its fine." Vinny glances me up and down, running a hand down his face and sighing muttering something under his breath.
"You sure girl?" he asks, knowing at this point, I'm completely sure, I have what he likes to call a golden heart, willing to put myself out to help anyone. He also knows that I don't pay my tabs. This is because I was orphaned when I was younger, I was one of his old men's daughters, my mother had died after giving birth to me so my father who worked under Vinny back when he ran the streets did his best to look after me, until he got stabbed and so Vinny took me in and raised me as his own.
I nod and he moves off to scold Lou for dazing when he should be taking coin.
Monroe looks me up and down "That was excellent persuasion, who are you?"
"(Y/N).. Moreau... I need a favour.. if you'd entertain it." I say hastily, pushing my hair behind my ear.
"A favour, what favour?" she hums
"May I join number, even for a beat? if people see you share the spotlight, they'll know I'm worthy.." I say sheepishly, I cant throw away my one shot at getting the recognition I need. The women laugh but I jump in "Before you answer, im a local here, I can get you anything you need without paying" I quickly say.
"What about tobacco?" Lang asks before being cut off by Monroe.
"Hold your tounge Beatrice." Monroe scolds.
"Sorry Beatrice.." Lang murmurs
"For a scrappy little nobody, you've got a face made for the spotlight..." Monroe says, tilting my face in her hands.
"And a balanced face, split it down the middle, id have a perfect pair- precision counts my dear." Holloway says, taking my face in her hands now, using one hand to split my face down the middle, looking me over.
"Honestly, a few inches off would polish the picture." Lang snarks, pinching at my waist.
"And you know, you know, you know? this could be beautiful, mascara maybe some lipstick, and we're on our way, get this girl some blush and Beatrice I need your brush, lets make her beautiful~" Monroe sings softly
"Lets make her beautiful~"
"Lets make her beautiful~" The other two women harmonise along side her
"Make her beautiful~ okay?" Monroe asks looking me up and down.
"Okay!" I say maybe a bit too excitedly, she pulls me into the dressing room with the other two tailing us, through the door we can hear a bar brawl starting to break out;
"Get along oddball" I can hear a man sneer as the beatrice's start gathering makeup from their purses and from the drawers from the rickety vanity, Holloway looking through the dresses on the rail.
"I dont want trouble" a higher voice calls out to the other man, another man nonetheless but obviously not used to confrontation, a newer patron.
"Tonight you'll meet your end" I hear Eddie call out, one always to encourage fights, get in a few himself even. While the women flutter about me the man being taunted mustve been pushed into some ladies.
"Stay back you bounder, mind your hands varmint!" the women scowl
"What have I done to earn their spite?" the poor man grumbles as the girls usher me towards the stage now dressed in a blue dress and painted with makeup. "who could survive this? I cant escape this, I think im dying"
"Who's that with beatrice?" the women call out
"(Y/N)?" Nellie calls out looking at me
"(Y/N)?" the crowd calls
"And you know you know you know, life can be beautiful! You hope you dream you pray, and you get your way! Ask me how it feels, strutting like sin on heels! My god its beautiful!" I belt out as Monroe stands beside me on stage.
"Beautiful!" she harmonises
"I might be beautiful!" I sing, my gaze falling around the room, catching the eye of someone i've never seen here before, I tilt my head as the man, caramel tinted skin, leg folded over the other, soft-looking chestnut coloured hair and gooey brown eyes that hide behind round-rimmed eye glasses wearing a white shirt, red waist coat with a black bowtie, black pants and shoes and a sinister smile.
"And when you're beautiful, Its a beautiful goshdarn day!" I end, stringing out the last vocal until I couldn't breathe anymore. I stand in silence for a moment before everyone applauds us, I smile and turn to Monroe who gives a slight nod and smile.
I turn to Monroe and thank her "Beatrice, thank you for sharing the spotlight with me. singing with you, its like the music finally knows me."
She turns her nose up with a smug smile and a scoff "Well with a voice like yours you might actually get somewhere." She says before I step down.
"That was amazing (Y/N)!" Nellie squeals girlishly at me as she comes up to me "I knew you we're a great singer but now so does everyone else!"
"Aww thanks doll, come lets get a drink." I smile, I glance back at the suspicious man at the back of the room, He stands and gives me a slight nod before leaving.
But for some reason.. deep down.. I dont think this will be the last time we'll see eachother.
Welp thats finally chapter 1 done, it was alot harder then I thought it would to alter the lyrics etc. but i did it. sorry if it seems kinda short? it was just a first chapter and we will get an official meeting between alastor and (y/n) soon I promise. Thank you for reading :3
