hey guysss so unfortunately the rumors are true and im leaving the narrative. Buttt the good news is my absence will create such a gaping hole in your lives that it will become a sort of presence itself, and so in a way it will kind of be like i never left! But i am. Leaving just to be clear.

I am a bit embarrassed that it took me so long to put all this together, unfortunately I had developed a lot of learned shame around the topic of asking for money. I’ve wanted to post a clean copy of this for a while now. Below is the text as given in the War of the Jewels, but I’ve stripped it of Christopher Tolkien’s notes on dates, manuscripts, revisions, draft variants, etc.—NOT BECAUSE THOSE AREN’T SUPER INTERESTING, but I wanted to present this as like… a finished, readable story, which I actually think it more or less is. I’ve kept a few of the in-line notations where I think they help clarify the action and/or add casual interest (Tolkien’s waffling about Brethil’s sex-equality, for example) without interrupting the flow.

I’ve also attached a few of the most entertaining/standalone endnotes, mostly for my own reference.

“Nah, that’s gotta be me,” Bossuet chimed in. “Jehan swears they know everything, so if you want to be quizzed…”

“No thanks, I’m ready.” Joly took out his usual foil-wrapped sandwich. “Tried putting avocado in it this time.”

“You don’t even like avocado!”

“That’s the thing, Chetta. I just gotta try it again.”

“Girl.” Musichetta snorted. “Good fuckin luck.”

For those wondering about the fox. Grace has a subtle motif with this animal throughout the movie, but especially this shot where they pack this toy fox with his belongings on the Hail Mary.
