If you would report an undocumented immigrant to ICE you would have reported me to the Nazis and I donāt fucking trust you
A note:
I live in a state where you āhave toā report anyone you suspect of being undocumented (that wonderful hellhole of Arizona). Now in practice this law has fallen far short, thank goodness. But if you live in such a place and they start enforcing it, here is how you get around it:
Assume everyone who doesnāt speak English is visiting.
Never ask about their job, because if they tell you they work here then you know theyāre not visiting. You see them a lot for several weeks or months? Hm. Someone in the family must be ill. Thatās terribly tough. They always dress in old, ratty laborersā clothes? I feel you, my dude, I canāt afford new clothes either, and my dad has the fashion sense of an aardvark, so sometimes itās not even about āaffordingā them. They say theyāve been here for years? You must have misunderstood. Spanish isnāt your first language, after all. First and last name? It never came up, or you donāt recallāyou meet a lot of people.
And then, if youāre asked: no, you havenāt seen anyone residing illegally in the United States. Just people visiting.
Very good very important addition
Essentially, this is the civil society version of a work-to-rule strike.
Donāt do more than is expressly asked of you, and do what you are asked with such an intense attention to protocol that not asking you at all becomes more effective than even bothering.
In this case:
āHave you seen an illegal immigrant?ā
āCould you describe an illegal immigrant, officer?ā
*officer describes a person who is in the country without appropriate paperwork, or who has crossed the border illegally*
āNo, sir, I havenāt seen any illegal immigrant.ā
And this is correct. You have NOT seen an illegal immigrant, because you have no way of knowing if Jose Fulano is here legally or not. And since you canāt see his paperwork (or lack thereof), and did not personally see him cross the border illegally, you are only answering precisely the question asked.
Iām not American, and I have like, three followers, but this is important.
So, Iām a lawyer, who deals with immigration though does not specialize in it. But hereās the thing(s):Ā
1) Even someone whoās working could be here on a migrant (or other sort of) visa (hey, there are a few thousand per year, and *someone*ās got to get them, right?) or could be waiting for their case to resolve in immigration court, after having come to America to join a born or naturalized American family member.Ā
2) Even people who are working improperly could have come into the country legallyĀ ā and just overstayed their visa or be violating the conditions of their visa, and you have no idea what the niggly little regulations that govern that might be.Ā
3) If a law enforcement officer asks you about a neighbor/friend/etc., take this moment to remind them that, unlike them, you cannot ask a random person off the street for their ID and be entitled to a response.Ā
4) Even if someone has told youĀ that they are undocumented, you still donāt know, do you? Humans lie all the time. How could you know for sure? You canāt, because they canāt prove that they have a lack of papers. Just because you havenāt seen papers doesnāt mean they donāt exist!Ā
5) Donāt ever talk to cops in general. Why are you talking to a cop? Stop that, as soon as it is safe and feasible.Ā

A psa to my youngest followers:
- An older adult solely hanging with younger teens (Iām talking 25yo & 15yo) and who doesnāt seem to have any other adult friend is a red flag.
- An older adult talking to a younger teen and saying stuff likeĀ āyouāre the only one who understands meāĀ āIād hurt myself if you werenāt thereāĀ āYouāre my only friendā is a red flag.
- Someone (regardless of age) who constantly ends up in discourse & drama is a red flag.
- If youāre afraid to talk to your friend(s), if you feel like youāve got to tiptoe as to not set them off and get yelled at/ostracized/worse, thatās a red flag.
Please take care.
If you have an hour and a half to spare, please consider watching Seaspiracy on Netflix. It's an engaging documentary on the devastating and atrocious practices of the fishing industry across the globe that are killing our oceans and harming our own species in ways one wouldn't even think of.

You know maybe amatonormativity exists but it's hard to say that when I'm 90% sure gay people were not being encouraged to seek out relationships by the wider culture until maybe 2005-ish
what's amatonormativity?
A Tumblr-based sociological theory that boils down to "compulsory alloromanticism" but I've also seen it defined to include monogamy as another expectation under the header of amatonormativity
Amatonormativity is not tumblr based- it was not created on tumblr nor was it popularised on tumblr. Amatonormativity was not even coined by asexual people or with asexual people in mind exclusively.Ā
Amantonormativity was coined by feminist academic Elizabeth Brake in her bookĀ āMinimising Marriageā to refer to:
the assumptions that a central, exclusive, amorous relationship is normal for humans, in that it is a universally shared goal, and that such a relationship is normative, in that it should be aimed at in preference to other relationship types. (Source)
Amatornormativity doesnāt just affect asexual and aromantic people. Whilst itās often asexual and aromantic people you see talking about amatonormativity (because we become hyper aware of it due to how it affects us), it actually impacts the lives of people of all orientations, including LGBT+ people.
Amatonormativity in practice isā¦
The assumption that all single people are unhappy with their status and looking not to be single.
āComing of ageā milestones often revolving around romantic accomplishments (first kiss, first crush, first love, marriage, etc).
Non romantic partnerships (sexual or platonic) being looked down upon.
A sort of relationship hierarchy where marriage is at the top and everything else falls somewhere below it.
The expectation for romantic partners to be more important than jobs, hobbies or other commitments in a personās life. And the belief that people who choose to pursue the former are selfish.
People who are not seeking exclusive romantic relationships being seen as less mature, stable, trustworthy or settled.
The structuring of laws and society on the basis that eventually everyone will be in a committed romantic partnership (marriage).
The toxic idea of a āfriendzoneā (which of course, overlaps with misogyny), where friendship with a woman is seen as āsecond prizeā to a relationship with her.
People settling for someone theyāre not really happy with or compatible with just to fulfil the desire or expectation to have a partner.
Non-aromantic asexual people trying to normalise their orientation by saying they can still āfall in loveā or āhave relationshipsā ājust like anyone elseā.
Asexual people or people who donāt feel attraction to anyone feeling pressured to seek out and enter into relationships.
And much moreā¦
Violations of amatonormativity would include dining alone by choice, putting friendship above romance, bringing a friend to a formal event or attending alone, cohabiting with friends, or not searching for romance. (Source)
Also the way turning down a request for a date, while single, is often viewed as some sort of terrible insult instead of an analysis of poor compatibility.
Also the idea that itās wrong to break up with someone unless theyāve done something objectively terrible enough toĀ ādeserve itā rather than because the relationship isnāt doing anything for you.
It also encourages people to stay in abusive relationships because it pushes being in a relationship is the highest priority/being alone is terrible.
Also....
āI'm 90% sure gay people were not being encouraged to seek out relationships by the wider culture until maybe 2005-ishā
Yes.
Yes, they were.
They were encouraged to seek out heterosexual relationships.
You canāt uncoupleĀ Amantonormativity from Heteronormativity. One is built into the other.Ā Heteronormativity means there is one right way to have a life, and that way is being straight, is falling in love, being monogamous, is complying to certain standards of beauty, itās being white and thin and abled.Ā
ALL of those things go into the ideal norm that is oppressing ALL OF US. It doesnāt matter in WHICH way you stray from the heteronormative ideal --- if youāre polyamorous or if youāre gay or if you donāt fall in love or you love while disabled. ANY WAY you stray from it is punished.Ā
Amatonormativity is not justĀ āyou must fall in love.ā ItāsĀ āYou must fall in love in the right way with the right person.ā
So yes, amatonormativity is absolutely linked to heteronormativity.
And, as ace-and-ranty hinted, it is also linked to the supremacy of monogamy. Amatonormativity alsoĀ excludes all forms of polyamory.
It also has something to do with why gays successfully got gay marriage before they got, say, āfederal protection from discrimination in adoption casesā or āthe right to be gender nonconforming in public schoolā. People who think itās weird to see a man in a dress can still wrap their head around āhe wants to marry the man he lovesā because all you did was swap the expected pronouns.
Amatonormativity does pressure people into heteronormative relationships, but it also exists within the gay community and allies, to place a monogamous marriage to a same-sex partner above, say, a polyamorous polycule, or an asexual living with a queerplatonic friend.
You can see this everywhere in social economic (say hotel and travel packages for two) and even political structures as above. And once you see you cannot unsee
Tax statuses in the US are Single, Married filing jointly, Married filing separately, Ā Head of household, Qualifying widow(er) with dependent child. Being a single person living alone does not make you the Head of a household, fyi. You have to have a dependent or another person living with you to qualify for that status. Most of the tax breaks in the US system are for being married and/or having children. Meanwhile as of the last census more than 30% of US households are 1 person living alone.
The entire system is set up to prioritize long-term committed monogamous relationships.
Everyone whoās been talking to me knows iāve been working on this comic about wlws and cats for a while and iām so so happy itās finally here!!! :D
