Calling all fanfic writers!
I'm currently doing an extended project at my college, in which I have chosen to research if fanfiction should be considered a modern genre of literature.
If there are any fanfiction writers who would like to weigh in on this topic, I'd be grateful if you could message me so I can do a mini interview! Don't worry, anything included in my project will remain anonymous. Don't hesitate to message me if you're interested Thank you! <3

*upon the airing of GO Season 2*
Audience: Didn’t you have a flaming actor?
Neil Gaiman: Uh…
A: You did! He was flaming like anything. What happened to him?
NG: Erm…
A: Lost him already have you?
NG: …replaced him with foxes
A: You what?
NG: I replaced him with fennec foxes!
It won't let me post this without a comment.
Hello Mr. Gaiman! Question - Have you found it terribly difficult to transition from novel writing to screen writing? A common note I receive from my professor is that my action lines read too novelistic-ly (?). I’m generally new to any sort of writing class so it’s hard for me not to take his notes personally, though I know it’s for the betterment of myself as a screenwriter.
Playwrights and screenwriters use different techniques to get the stories told. J.M. Barrie’s plays are almost novels: the stage directions are there to evoke mood, and to give you backstory and insight into the characters. (I was at a production of Peter Pan which made the narrator a character, so what Barrie wrote could also be said to the audience.)
That being said, it’s more helpful to a crew and cast just to give them what’s important because they take things literally, that’s their job, and if you stop to muse on something someone in the art department may work for a week unnecessarily on something that you didn’t even realise you’d requested. And also producers tend to estimate a page at a minute of screen time. A page which you muse beautifully on but which doesn’t have much going on in the way of action and dialogue will confuse everyone and make the script appear much longer than it’s going to be.
All rules can broken, but it’s wisest to do it their way first.
A screenplay is a blueprint for a house, and a novel is the house itself. That's how I like to think about it, anyway.
You don't want to expend all your energy on elaborate words in a script. What you want it is to be direct. To the point. Matter of fact. Because it is crucial that you write something that the people working on said script can read and translate as directly as possible.
So it's not about pretty words (aside from the dialogue that'll be spoken); it's about being as direct as you can.
INT/EXT are directions that are important to multiple different departments. DAY/NIGHT are directions that are important to multiple different departments. Action lines help directors and actors and camera people figure out blocking, the length of takes and more. They help set designers and costumers figure out the layout of the scene. Etc.
The way your script is written matter much less than the way your script will be translated.
Quickest way to learn how to write a screenplay is to volunteer as an extra pair of hands - usually called a production assistant or PA - on a small production that'll let you read the script beforehand. Once you both read the script and see for yourself the process that goes into the translation of that script, you'll understand why it's absolutely crucial that you do not write your scripts like a novel but instead write them like something a cast and crew can take direction from.
