Gt July Day 7 — Dare

“Go on, then. I dare you!”

Charlie looked at his younger sister in utter bafflement. “What?” was all he could say at first. “What does that mean?”

Elisabeth’s round young face split into a grin. She rocked back and forth on the balls of her feet; whenever she wound up on tiptoes she, all of ten years old, was almost as tall as her eleven-year-old brother. “It’s a human thing!” she declared. “I saw it on the telly the other day. It’s like a game. You dare somebody to do something, and then they have to do it.”

Charlie’s brow furrowed, his mouth creasing into a frown. “That doesn’t sound like a very fun game. Why do you have to do it?”

Elisabeth shrugged. “Because it’s a dare. That’s just the rules.”

“Do you… take turns?”

“Charlie!” Elisabeth stopped bouncing so that she could huff at him in frustration. “It was just on a show, they didn’t explain it. Humans already know all about dares.”

Charlie’s frown was still locked in place. “I suppose.” He looked down at Elisabeth again and gauged the familiar type of excitement she was exuding. With a sigh, he said, “Alright then, I’ll play. What is it you want me to do?”

Elisabeth returned to her bouncing with renewed vigor, fists clenched in a silent cheer. “Yay! Alright, I dare you…” She looked around for inspiration, though whether or not she found any in their tidy little living room was anyone’s guess. “…to… erm… go take something off our human’s desk!” She beamed, pleased with her choice of dare.

“Adrian’s desk?” Charlie asked, just to clarify. Elisabeth nodded, eyes alight, but Charlie just sighed. “Elisabeth, it’s nearly four. He’ll be back from school any minute now.”

Elisabeth’s smile slid into a pout. “Well, then, you’d better hurry!”

“Elisabeth!” Charlie looked almost scandalized. “That’s really unsafe!”

“But you have to do it. That’s how dares work!”

“I’m not going to go get seen for a game, Elisabeth.”

She crossed her arms. “Fine. You have to do the dare tonight, then.”

That wasn’t going to work either. “You know our bedtime is earlier than his, don’t you? He’s 14, he’s even older than Amelia.”

“Ugh! Fine!” Elisabeth slumped in her chair, in a fine pique now. She kicked at the empty spool of thread that served as the base of their kitchen table. “Do it tomorrow, then, when he’s back at school. But you have to do it!”

“Alright,” Charlie agreed, giving her an apologetic smile. He got up and walked over to the kitchen cabinets; maybe a snack would cheer her up. “I’ll do your dare tomorrow. I promise.”

Rivals only ever makes me think of Pokémon, so of course I had to doodle something from the Pokémon AU. Sawyer thinks he and Colfax share a special, rivals bond. Colfax does not agree. They don’t even battle much. Calm down, Sawyer.

Inktober Day 12 – Shredded

With Charlie no longer making such a racket against the box, Colfax could focus more on the sound of tearing paper as he split a sheet into thinner and thinner strips. He paused when he was finished with part of a page, before setting the crumpled paper ribbons next to the mouse. He’d heard that mice could use all sorts of things to make little forts for themselves. “You may use those,” he said, “but only so long as you don’t make your nest here.”

Charlie’s face lit up as the thin shreds of paper were set next to him. “Thank you!” he said, really meaning it, and gathered up as much of the tangled, torn paper as he could.
