A few times, my boyfriend has tied my arms with rope. It's fun, but not long after getting tied, my hands start to feel tingly and numb-ish. Even with different ways of tying my arms. It makes me freak out like there's going to be permanent nerve damage or something and that takes the fun out of it. Is there some degree of tingling/numbness that is ok and normal or is any at all a very bad thing? How can you tell the difference between ok and not ok? Or are we doing something incorrectly? Thank!

hey!  so here’s the deal.  there are two different things that can happen.  either circulation/blood tingles, or nerve tingles.  

blood tingles are okay for a certain amount of time - arms don’t last as long as legs generally, but it’s similar to a limb falling asleep.  you know when you wake up in the morning with your arm under you and it’s totally gone?  that limb probably had the blood cut off in some way for a while - same idea with rope.  blood tingles are “safer”.  nerve tingles however - not so safe.  

how can you tell the difference?  be VERY mindful of your body.  generally nerve tingles will either be from the ulnar or radial nerve - you will feel just your thumb going numb, or thumb and forefinger, or just your pinky or pinky and ring finger, etc.  blood tingles will make your whole hand feel numb at once (generally), and therein lies the difference.  

so basically just learn to pay attention to your body.  learn what the two sensations feel like and how they differ.  also - you can learn to put the rope in less “nerve-y” places.  for instance, i have to have the rope bands on my upper arms high always, never below my top red/black band tattoo.  lower than that and i know my nerves will be hit.  try labbing stuff out with your partner outside of a scene context.  put rope on, see how it feels - talk to each other.  take it off, try again, repeat.
