My read on the way back to uni. I have to read this for my literature in history module. So far I'm not liking it so much.

Review: Windwitch (Witchlands #2) by Susan Dennard
[Goodreads Link] [Amazon Link] [Book Depository Link]
“Yet only in death, could they understand life. And only in life, could they change the world.”
The epic sequel to fantasy novel Truthwitch, Windwitch picks up where the first book left off, diving deeper into all of the characters, the world, and throwing a wrench into everyones plans.
First off, let me just exclaim my love for these books. I love the characters, I love the world, I love the writing and the dialogue. Just. Everything.
I thought the first book had a brilliant cast of characters to follow and love, what I did not expect was an even more diverse cast of characters to be added to the group, explode onto the page, and steal my heart.
Plot:
Windwitch has a focus on Merrik, the Prince of Nubrevna, who is in a dark place and is searching for clues to connect his sister Vivia to an assassination attempt on his life. We also follow Isulet, Safi, Aeduan, and another character I wasn’t expecting to see POV from but absolutely LOVED, as they navigate dangerous territory. None of the characters are safe, but all of them have amazing side-characters they can rely on to help them through.
Writing:
I adored reading the first book, and really felt like Windwitch was a step up from that for a few reasons- the first being the expansion of the cast and how different each character is, and where they are in terms of their character development.
The expansion of the world and the mythos of it was incredibly interesting to me, as well. That’s what really makes a fantasy series and Windwitch had it in spades. Through the abundant cast of characters and their travels we get to explore the world, the creatures in it, the different cultures and terrains. It’s just so beautifully fleshed out.
The fantastic witty dialogue manages to break tension while the characters traverse life-threatening situations, and the life-threatening situations are many, but not so ridiculously often that you don’t feel like you can’t catch your breath. It’s a wonderful balance between “oh, shit” and “OH SHIT”.
General Comments:
Possibly one of my favourite things about this series is that instead of seeing:
“[the character] swore.”
we get gems like
“Weasels piss on you!”
and I’m not saying I laugh out loud every single time but I totally laugh out loud every single time.
I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I also feel like I can’t leave this information out of the review. When I said a diverse cast of characters burst onto the page, I wasn’t exaggerating. Dennard really stepped it up here. One of the characters is disfigured by burns almost beyond recognition. I don’t want to put a specific label on it, but there’s a potentially lesbian relationship being built. There’s a young trans boy. There are many POC. It’s incredibly refreshing to read.
So, please, if you haven’t picked up Truthwitch yet, I highly recommend you do, at the very least so you can enjoy Windwitch in all it’s wonderfulness.

This was a total cover buy lol and it was only like $3 so I had to get it! I’ve heard it’s kind of an odd book. Anyone read it? What did you think of it? #bookstagram #thevorrh
Favourite Books of 2016!
All of these books (with the exceptions of Vicious and Emmy & Oliver) came out in 2016. Honourable mentions to This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab which I didn’t include because there’s already 2 other Schwab books in this set, and My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows which I left out because it’s currently on loan to a friend.
Day 30: Just one word: Re-cap
I read 8 out of 9 of the books I chose to read for @ladybookmad’s #readthemargin challenge!! 💙 Including, Marie Rukoskis, The Winner’s Kiss and now i’m reading, The 100 by Kass Morgan!! 💜
If you could spend the holidays in any story, which setting would you pick? A snowy Narnia would be pretty, but I’d definitely pick Hogwarts 🎄
