I am saying this as a native New Yorker, SHOWS ARE ALSO FUCKING EXPENSIVE. But truly, I know so many people who are fans of shows that I’ve seen but they’re unable to because of their location or financial struggles. I do think that musicals should be more widespread and accessible, but saying that this doesn’t hurt the industry is a bit of a stretch. I mean, if you’ve already seen the professionally recorded video of the musical, why go see the show? It wouldn’t work as well as you think it would. And even if this was the case, add revenue wouldn’t bring in nearly as much money as they get doing live shows on broadway. I do believe that there should be a way for more people to get the theatrical experience that we do in New York, but by some means that wouldn’t hurt the show’s profit or turnout.
But people go to concerts for their favorite musical acts all the time. Even though they can watch their videos or listen to their music pretty much anytime anywhere.
Yeah, I watched my VHS of CATS to death as a teen and I had two different soundtracks and I STILL went to see it when it was touring near me THREE DIFFERENT GODDAMN TIMES. Having a nicely filmed version of the show, if you like the show, just increases the urge to go see the real thing when you can afford it!
There is nothing that compares to a live theatre experience. Just from the standpoint of sheer energy. So yes, people will still go to see live theatre. I have the recording of the last broadway performance of RENT and I’ll still go see it live when it’s near me. People who love theatre and who have the means to go will do it. This just helps people who can’t afford it.
I remember when MTV aired a Legally Blonde the Musical on TV and it was awesome.
Also it makes musicals accessible to people who physically CAN’T go see them. Professionally-shot videos can have subtitles. Live performances can’t. Professionally-shot videos can be paused if someone gets overwhelmed and starts screaming. A live performance will be disrupted if that happens.
Refusing to make musicals accessible to a wider range of people is a whole bunch of -isms put together and there’s no fucking excuse for it.
