Sort of vaguely off the back of your (excellent) post about what happens to the arts and to expression when you have forces of militarism and oppression in power, I was wondering about the Moira/Krailert convo early in the ep, when he says he never expected this day to come and she replies that she did - do you think she meant that in a general 'at some point all this secret recording will come in handy and the army's dirty laundry will be aired' way, or was she specifically referring to Krailert's own day of reckoning? Because I think I love the idea that Moira - who knows he's gay, who guesses he's Klairung, who provides him with a safe space to play the piano, who sees all those hidden sides of him - understood better than Krailert himself that at his core he was too gentle/kind/sincere/sensitive, too good to stay part of such a destructive, ruthless, corrupt machine forever. That she predicted the day would come when he'd be true to his own nature and stand up for what's right.
I think you are very right about Moira seeing something in Krailert! Something he himself had packed away and forgotten. Moira is portrayed as someone who knows people, sure its in part because she is spying on them, but also she's just good at reading people, and I definitely think she saw the potential in him to break the chains, because he is good and he does want betterment for their country (he's just backing the wrong path towards it), and he is someone who will never fit into those strict societal expectations, no matter how hard he tries.
I also think she meant it in a general sense. I think Moira is an optimist (in like a realist way) and someone who believes in change. She's been through a lot of change herself throughout her life, and doesn't strike me as a person who believe things to be static. I think she really believed/hoped for Krailert to be part of that change, but that it would happen regardless at some point.
In the same way, I think there's a double meaning to Krailert's words. I think he had lost all hope that things could be different, that those in power could be challenged, and that he certainly never thought he would be the one to do it! That he had gotten so used to keeping his head down, to follow orders to keep his people safe, he thought that was the way it would always be. Even when he started recording, and when he finally spoke up, I think he considered it a suicide mission, that someone higher up would cover it up, so used to those in power coming out on top, the way he's seen it so many times before. He seems so genuinely surprised that it actually sparked change and that he got out of there alive.
(Which makes his ending even more devastating, because he finally had gotten a taste of hope and freedom)
But yeah, Moira and Krailert's friendship is definitely an interesting one!
