Fan Fic: Unkindness of Friendship
After I said good bye to Hee Jun and his car pulled off, I headed back inside. Tears welled in my eyes but didn’t fall. He was my best friend, my brother and I am saddened that his journey ended this soon. What the heck am I going to do without him?
Elise was standing in the doorway holding the door open for me. Once I got inside she embraced me in her arms.
“I am so sorry Phil. I know how much he means to you. Don’t worry; everything will work out for him. He is and amazing and talented person. And don’t forget we have the summer tour.”
“I know, it’s just, dang I’m gonna miss that guy.”
“We all are love.” She said rubbing my shoulder. I looked over at Hannah, and if looks could kill, I would be dead twice. She was sitting on the couch starring at me from the far end of the room with her arms folded across her chest. Elise turned and caught her eye. She cleared her throat, dropped her hand from my shoulder, and gave a dry smile.
“If you need me I am here.” She headed over to the fridge and grabbed a water.
I walked over to Hannah and sat next to her. She rolled her eyes. “Hannah, what’s your problem?” I am the one who is supposed to be upset not you?”
“Oh Phillip, please you act like your best friend just died. Get over it he is just going to the hotel.” She sucked her teeth.
Jessica and Skylar looked at each other with wide eyes. They got up and joined Hollie and Josh who were holding a conversation. I heard Skylar say, “I think there is about to be an argument guys.” Hollie and Josh looked over at us. Josh said something but I couldn’t hear him. I turned back to Hannah. I could not believe she was acting like this. “You know Hannah, you don’t have to be so insensitive. Again what is your problem?”
“Why does Elise always have to touch you?’
“What?” I asked in disbelief.
“Every time I look up she has her hands on some part of your body Phillip.”
“That’s just ridiculous Hannah. She was giving me a hug. She is my friend.”
“Oh yeah, well tell your friend to keep her hands off of you.” She emphasized the word friend.
She stood up, grabbed her purse, and stormed out of the room. I let out a heavy sigh and shook my head. I placed my head in my hands and rested my hands on my lap. With the everyday stress of this competition, I do not need her insecurities added on. I felt someone plop onto the couch. I looked up and saw Colton.
“Man, what was that all about dude? What’s gotten into her.?”
“Man, I have no idea. She just freaked out because Elise and I hugged.” I shrugged my shoulders.
“Dude, I thought her head was about to do a 360 like the Exorcist.” He laughed hysterically.
I laughed also as I shoved his shoulder. “Shut up Colton.”
“No seriously, I was about to run out of the room.”
Elise headed over to us and placed her hand on my shoulder. “I’m sorry I got you in trouble Phil.” She sat on the arm of the couch. Her touch made me stiffen. I guess she noticed because she immediately removed her hand.
“Oh Elise, don’t worry about her. I’m sure she’s just a little stressed out.”
“A little?” Colton joked.
“Serious man, cut it out. Colton leave her alone.”
Elise touched my knee. “I don’t want to cause any problems between you and Hannah, so just let her know we are good friends.
There she goes again with the touching. I looked down at her hand on my knee and then up at her. Hannah’s outburst made me pay attention to every time Elise touched me. She slid down from off of the arm and was basically sitting on my lap. “Scoot over Phil.” She said wiggling her hips into the seat.
She pulled her phone out of her pocket and began to hum to the tune of “Stand by Me.” I starred at her in awe. Her voice was truly amazing. For the first time I saw her in a different light. She is absolutely beautiful. She closed her eyes as she got deeper into it and began to sing the words. She opened her eyes and stopped when she caught me looking.
“Please, don’t stop that sounds awesome.”
“No, for real, it was beautiful.”
I continued where she left off. “If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall.” She joined in. “And the mountain should crumble to the sea.” We sang in harmony.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and surrounded us. They began to clap their hands and tap their thighs or the table to make the beat. The rest of the group joined in around the second to last chorus.
I smiled as I looked at each individual in the room. Smiles were upon everyone’s face. It felt great to be among these guys. They really did know how to make a person feel better.
Before the last note was sung, Elise rested her head on my shoulder and sang “Stand by me”.
We applauded each other. When I looked up I saw Hannah standing in the doorway scowling at me, and shaking her head. Oooohhhs escaped everyone’s mouth followed by laughter. I stuck out my tongue and made the duck face at them. I jumped off the couch and ran after her as she jetted down the hall.
