WANT
There’s been a shift though, hasn’t it? In the last, I’d say, five or six years where I think people wanted just visibility or representation. Now it’s not enough just be visible, you have to be vocal. And it’s not okay to be just represented in a tokenistic way. People want to be their unapologetic, full selves. I think that’s exciting. If you watch work like Michaela Cole’s TV show, (I MAY DESTROY YOU) blew my mind, inspired me so much on so many levels. It’s just unapologetically HER. Because she’s made it so personal, it contains within it this complexity that goes far beyond representation. It’s her presentation of her soul. And you’ve got an amazing piece of TV out of that. It does more in half an hour than most shows do in three. It’s groundbreaking as well to see black British life portrayed with that nuance on TV.
