A guide to meditation and visualization
Meditation and visualization are two very important tools that hone your sense of self as well as your sense of the world around you. While they can be practiced and developed individually, I’ve found that they go hand in hand and that to train one is to train the other. Meditation can help you become more in tune with your body and senses, while visualization helps keep your imagination active while helping protect and revitalize your mind, spirit and body. Both meditation and visualization require practice and dedication but once they’ve become a part of your routine, you’ll soon wonder how you did without them. Every week I’ll be bringing you a new exercise (or exercises) to help you develop these skills. I’ll be starting with the basics and slowly moving my way up to harder things, so if you have questions in the meantime, don’t hesitate to ask!
Meditation Exercise 1
* Read through all of the steps before attempting this. Meditation isn’t something you can do while constantly distracted by something else. On that note, please turn off your cellphone or put it somewhere else. No television, phones, or computer. Just quiet. *
Step 1: Find somewhere comfortable and quiet. It can be outside or inside as long as there is a minimum of noise.
Step 2: Make yourself comfortable. You can be standing, sitting, kneeling, or lying down, as long as you’re comfortable and won’t have to move around for five to ten minutes. When I first began meditation, I knelt with my bum resting on my feet, palms up on my knees. You have to find out which position you find more natural.
Step 3: Alright, now down to the actual meditation.
Now, you can either leave your eyes open or you can close them. I’m a bit of an oddball so while I find it easier to leave my eyes open, you will probably want to close them.
Step 4: Relax. Loosen your muscles. Start to really feel your breaths as you inhale and exhale. I don’t mean that you should make them deeper – just become aware of your actions. Feel the air moving in and out of your diaphragm. Feel the air entering and leaving your body. Let your thoughts leave you. Like you loosened your muscles, loosen your mind and let it remain relaxed. If a thought enters, don’t chase it out. Instead, let it float around before it disappears. Both your body and mind should be relaxed.
Step 5: Slowly open your eyes (if they were closed) and become aware of your surroundings. Continue with your steady breathing as you awaken from your meditative state.
There you are! You’ve just meditated. It might be difficult to focus at first, but you should make an effort to meditate every day. Perhaps in the beginning it will only be for five minutes, but as time goes on it can extend to longer periods of time. For those of you who would like to begin my regimen of meditation and visualization – I do expect you to do this exercise every day. For this first week, I expect at least five minutes a day from you. I know that you can do it, because I managed it and I was quite possibly the most unmotivated person EVER at the time.
When you become more comfortable with meditation, you could begin extending the amount of time that you take to accomplish it. Join me again next week for the first guide on visualization. Meditation is key to learning visualization so don’t forget to practice! Let me know how your meditation progresses, and if there is anything that you need help with or that I should clarify.
Blessed be,
Daniella
Deity of the Day: Kali
Kali is a Hindu goddess who is often regarded as the "dark mother" and is goddess of time, change, and death. The root of her name Kal is the word for time in sanskirt. She is not associated with physical human death, but death of demons and egos. Many times, those not comprehending her many roles in life call Kali the goddess of destruction. She destroys only to recreate, as in to make way for better things. She is seen to destroy sin, ignorance, and decay. She is equated to the night and is the consort of Shiva. Without her, Shiva would not have the energy to act and she could not exist without him; symbolizing the male and female prospects we see in every part of Wicca. In the Hinduism, all gods and goddesses are a part of Devi, and Kali is seen as the most ferocious and compassionate because she provides liberation to her children. Pictures of Kali usually depict her with a garland of skulls and dismembered arms, which is to symbolize the ego separate of the body. She holds a sword and a freshly severed head. She is also seen standing on top of Shiva, who has white skin while she has black or dark blue. Some pictures are supposed to depict her as "scary," because it is belief that a person attached to their ego will be unreceptive to her and see her as fearsome. People with spiritual practice will see the illusion removed and perceive her with uncomprehending love. Kali's arms represent the circle of creation and destruction.
Kali is seen as the goddess of time, death, illusions, the first chakra, clear sight, unworldliness, freedom and liberation, prosperity, success, agriculture, good over evil, enlightenment, fear, and the cycle of birth and death. Pray to her if you need an illusion lifted or revealed, knowledge, enlightenment, liberation, success, prosperity, anything dealing with time, if you need to forgive other's wrongdoings, the first chakra healed, or if you need selflessness. The colors to use with her are red and black. She is said to dwell at cremation grounds (or cemeteries). Things to offer Kali are plain and simple gifts, such a pure wine or unelaborate cooking, fruit flowers and fragrances. She is also said to likes reverence through prayer, ritual, and invocation. The best time to work with her is on a new moon, especially in October or November.
Kali is associated with the first chakra. She associated with these chakra stones: hematite, black obsidian, black tourmaline, red zincite, garnet, and Smoky quartz.
Smoky quartz helps with dissipating negativity, balancing the energies of mind and body, and meditation. It is a protective and grounding stone, and enhances dream awareness and channeling abilities. It is also said to help with depression, and is mildly relaxing. The corresponding zodiac signs are Capricorn and Sagittarius. In Hindu, all goddesses are ultimately one thing: Devi. She is seen to take different forms as the goddesses to convey different traits. Kali first manifested when Parvati/Durga furrowed her brows in anger when the demon, Daruka, threatened the gods. She jumped out and put an end to Daruka, and is considered an aspect of Parvati. When she started killed two demons, she drained the blood from their bodies. She became so overjoyed and drunk off of this, she began to dance. She continued dancing, and destroying everything in her wake, not realizing this. She danced and destroyed, until she realized Lord Shiva had thrown himself under her feet. Astonished she slowed her dancing, but it is believed she will not forever. It is believed that when she continues her dance, the world will end. Other sources say Parvati, in the form of Kali, set out to kill the millions of duplicates of Raktabija on the battlefield, when none of the gods could kill them. Kali then appeared, with red eyes, dark complexion, gaunt features, unbound hair, and sharp teeth. She provoked fear in the demons. She ordered the gods to kill Raktabija, while she covered the ground with her tongue to prevent the bloodshed from making other duplicates. She was so overjoyed that they had defeated the demon, that she began her dance of death over the body of the demons. Her husband, Lord Shiva, saw the destruction she was doing, and threw himself among the bodies of the demons to prevent her from doing more. When she realized she was dancing on the body of her husband, her tongue hung out of her astonished mouth in sorrow and surprise. She became stunned in this position, and is pictured like this. sources: http://www.dollsofindia.com/kali.htm http://www.goddess.ws/kali.html http://hinduism.about.com/od/hindugoddesses/a/makali.htm http://www.orderwhitemoon.org/goddess/kali/Kali.html http://www.bestcrystals.com/chakra~1.html

Deity of the Day: Frigg/Frigga
Frigga is a Norse Goddess. She is the wife of Odin, and ruler over love, birth, marriage, destiny, and the sky. She weaves the sky and fates, and is considered responsible for the fertility of crops (due to the rain and sun from the sky). She is considered the "All mother." She is a "seer"; she knows fates, but does not change the course of them. She gave birth to Baldr (alternately called Balder), Hodor, and in some texts Wecta. She has many stepchildren: Thor, Hermóðr, Heimdallur, Týr, Bragi,Víðarr, Váli, and Skjöldu. Her attendants, Hlin, Gna, and Fulla, are seen as a part of Frigga. She took part in the Wild Hunt and was the only one allowed to sit on the High Seat other than Odin. Her name translates to "wife," "beloved," or "the loving." She is sometimes depicted as in a chariot pulled by cats. She is seen as alike Freya, but not the same.
Frigga is considered the queen of the heavens, the goddess of birth and motherhood, renewal, love, and housework. Some myths say she has the ability to see futures, but not reveal them; others say she cannot reveal them. Call upon her for help with prophecies, any sky work, healing, inspiration, strength, fertility, love, renewal, marriage, household management, transition into the afterlife, motherhood, and domestic arts.
The best day to work with her is a waxing moon and Friday; it is named after her. Her element is water and the colors she is associated with are blue, white, and aqua. She is strongest at Yule. Things to offer her are falcon and hawk feathers, jewels, rose, sandalwood, myrtle, and wine. The New Year is also quite powerful/special for her. Plants associated with her are mistletoe, birch, mugwort, mint, rose, tansy, and Valerian. Gems associated with her are amber, moonstone, silver, rose quartz, emerald and gold.
Sacred animals to Frigga are the Cat, Hawk, and Falcon. Cats have long been associated with magick and witches, starting in Egypt. They are known to be common familiars and are said to be very in tune with the super natural. They may be messenger for you, protectors, or just there to guide you in magickal practice.
Frigga is married to Odin and the mother of Baldr.
New year's eve is considered to be when she labored to give birth to Baldr, and he was considered one of the most beloved gods because he was so pleasant and "radiant." Frigga foresaw his death, and she loved Baldr greatly, so she decided to try to prevent his death. She made an oath on every thing not to hurt Baldr, but she overlooked the mistletoe because it seemed insignificant. They threw and shot harmful things at him, but he was invincible to these. Loki knew Frigga overlooked the mistletoe. He fashioned a poison dart made of the plant, and gave it to Baldr's brother, Hodor. Hodor shot it at Baldr, not knowing. It struck him in the heart. Frigga mourned so deeply that the plant took pity and grew milky white berries formed from her tears. In another version Baldr is brought back to life, and is so overjoyed that she reverses the curse she had placed on the plant; making it a symbol of love and peace. Winner of the Tarot Deck:
Congratulations Violetwine! Your tarot deck will be mailed ASAP! Thanks to everyone who played! Your support is greatly appreciated. Blessed Be~
Hi! Great Blog. Recently I have been very interested in learning more about Wicca and the more obscure deities and beliefs of the world. I was wondering what sources you, and other sites like you, take your information from. Specifically information on such subjects as alchemy (I'm curious because i saw your "The seven lords (alchemy)" post) and Wiccan deities. Keep on posting!
Amber:Thank you! The source we used for the alchemy was an angel magick book, that touched onto alchemy. For the Wiccan deities, I use many sources on the internet and some friends' books. I want to make sure the information is correct, so I compare all of them. I try to include the most inclusive and correct sources at the end of all deity posts for people who want more information. Thanks for the support! If you have any more questions or requests for a certain deity or branch of wicca, just ask!Blessed be!
James:
Ah! As Amber said, the Seven Lords post I made was information I got from a book that has a few sections that delve into alchemy and things related. Personally, I prefer more the sources from books to online, but when I look for information over the internet about a subject, so be it divination, spells or just some beginners information (I myself am still fairly new to everything!) I do the same as with Amber and cross-reference the sites I visit to ensure the information I've gathered is alike or similar, then I know better that it's more likely true.
Hope you liked the post! I intend to continue the Seven Lords to better get my foot into the blog. Before I just helped with information gathering and opinions. :)
Broaden your horizons, be sure to stop by your local library and see what texts they have to offer, accompany that with some online studies of your own and you'll be set!
Best of wishes and blessed be!. :)

The Seven Lords(alchemy): The Sun, Lord of Light
The sun is the radiant heart of the solar system, without which there would be no life. The sun is vitality, the will to live, conciousness and spirit. As a planetary sphere, the sun's influence is bedign, but if overemphasized it can engender pride and self-centerdness. Without the cooling, moistening influence of the moon, it can be harsh, arid and burning. The sun rules the individual mind, energy and willpower. Physiologically it governs the heart, circulation and health.
- The sun is equated with gold; the ideal metal, which it evolves to perfection by its heat and transforming rays in the crucible of the Earth. - As the celestial consort of the moon, it is the masculine principle, the active, engendering seed, which alchemists refer to as the father of stone. - It's corrosponding chakra is anahata, the heart chakra.

Deity of the Day: Demeter
Demeter is a Greek goddess of the harvest and earth. She is also known as being the gift-giver. Demeter is also the goddess of planned society and fertility. She also presides over marriage, the sacred law and the cycle of life and death. She is said to have taught mankind the art of sowing and plowing plants, since they were nomadic. She held power over the prime substance to take care of mankind. She is usually depicted as a mature goddess with long golden locks of hair, usually seen carrying sheafs of wheat and/or a torch. Demeter is said to wield a golden sickle or a golden sword. She is the mother of Persephone, who goes to the underworld at the autumn equinox. Demeter holds power over the wheel of the year. She is the Goddess of the Earth and to farmers. Items to offer her are Honeycombs, unspun wool, unpressed grapes, and uncooked grains. The best day to work with her is Saturday and is strongest around Mabon. The colors to use with her are green, gold, brown, and blue-green. Call upon her for protection and anything involved with agriculture.
The associated animals with her are Mares (Demeter transforms into a mare) and Cranes. Horses are common in association with mythology and are many deity's companions, such as Odin and Epona. Horses are used in many rituals such as beltane and used to be used for divination. They are associated with death (in tarot) and fertility. Horses are also commonly used in protection magick. Hanging an iron horseshoe upside down against your home is said to protect your home from evil, and finding a horseshoe on the road is said to be powerful against disease. Cranes are associated with longevity and good fortune.
Demeter is the daughter of Chronus and Rhea(Cybele). She was a sibling to Zeus, Hestia, Posiedon, Hades and Hera. Posiedon desired her, so she fled to Arcadia, where she transformed into a mare. Posiedon was unable to find Demeter, so he transformed into a stallion and this resulted into Demeter having a talking horse, named Arion.
Demeter was outraged and hid in the caverns of Arcadia. Zeus convinced her to return, and she cleansed herself in the Ladon river. Zeus had a daughter with her named Persephone. She is depicted as being very devoted and loving to her daughter.
Persephone was playing outside, and picking flowers with her friends as a young girl. The flowers were not ordinary flowers and were set as a trap for a girl "as beautiful as a flower." It had one hundred fragrant blossoms. When she reached out to pick them, Hades roared forth with his chariot and kidnapped her before anyone noticed. Demeter could not find her child and was so sorrowed that she denied herself food, drink, and comfort for nine days. Hekate came to her on the tenth day and told her she had heard the voice, but had not seen the abduction. They asked Helios about this problem, as he sees all actions, and he confided that the blame was on Zeus and Hades. He told them to let it be, but Demeter did not want to.
Demeter took revenge by trying to tranform the son of Keleos and Metareina into an immortal. Before she could finalize it, they saw Demeter putting their son into a fireplace and Metareina recognized Demeter as the Goddess she was. She demanded a temple be built for her and Keleos gladly obliged. She took her brooding to the temple. The following year no seed sprouted from the ground. The mortals were to starve to death if her brooding did not lift. All the immortals came to Demeter and begged her to bring life to the earth, but she refused.
Zeus sent Hermes to the underworld to speak with Hades and Persephone. He suggested that her daughter be returned to her. Hades was filled with compassion for Demeter, but wanted to keep his bride. He allowed Persephone to leave, but gave her a pomegranate seed to eternally bind her to the underworld, so she would have to return soon.
In an attempt to keep the earth living, Zeus proposed that Persephone spend 2/3 of the year with her mother and 1/3 in the underworld with Hades. The earth swiftly gained vitality and crops, but everything was barren when her daughter had to leave her. This is mostly seen as the change in the seasons. There is life in spring, summer, and half of autumn, but none in winter. This is when Persephone is gone.
There is also a myth that since she has always had a feud with her brother Posiedon, that is why the sea is barren of crops.
