𝖎𝖎  —  YOU’RE  MY  BROTHER .  IT  WAS          a  set  of  words  he  never  thought  he’d  here .  up  until  age  seven ,  he  didn’t  even  know  the  family  of  four  existed .  it  wasn’t  something  his  mother  ever  spoke  about .  it  was  almost  like  the  he  who  must  not  be  named .  it  was  cursed ,   &   when  his  mother  died ,  suddenly  it  was  the  only  thing  he  knew .  he  went  from  ignoring  this  whole  family  to  being  forced   into  a  house  with  them  constantly .  so  to  be  considered  family ,  in  just  six  months ,  was  something .          ❛   i  just  never  thought  i’d  have  a  sister , actually .   ❜          his  leo  issue  suddenly  gone  from  his  mind  at  this  realization .          ❛   i  didn’t  really  know  you  existed  for  a  while   &   then  when  i  did  i  never  figured  we’d  actually  say  any  words  to  you .   ❜   

alma gave him a soft smile, “that’s pretty fair. i mean, i can’t imagine what it was like to know about us. that must’ve been... pretty rough. and i’m sorry.” of course, she wasn't the reason any of it had happened, but she felt bad. and she felt like, as the oldest sibling, it was her job to try and help make up him feel more welcome. she hadn't been doing as much as she could have, “for what it’s worth, i’m glad we’re saying words to each other now. i mean, not glad about these specific words because this whole situation kind of sucks, but i’m glad we can talk.” her words were rushed and a little clumsy, but that was how the blonde was. she meant every word, “you don’t have to go through this stuff alone.” her voice was quiet, “i’m sure youve heard that a million times, but it’s true.”

 she’s done pretty well at not being too off when she saw exes ; hookups or actual significant others.  but that was when she was high as a kite and didn’t really care if she said something weird or something that had the potential to sting.  simply put  —  she’s not sure how to approach it while sober.  alma’s always been nice,  however,  and she supposes that makes it easier to deal with.   “yeah,  it’s been like … a month?  two?”   she’s not sure,  there’s probably been a few bits when she’s seen her between,   “i’ve been good.  ups,  downs.  you know,  whole shebang,  lots of crying involved.”   maybe too much honesty.   “you look good,  too.  you always did,  though.  what’ve you been up to?  stealing any hearts or some bullshit like that?”

alma shrugs, a soft grin on her face, “yeah, i guess so. but, time is fake, so, who really knows, right?” she listens to lisa, genuinely interested. she doesn't have any hard feelings- and she hopes the feeling is mutual, “lots of crying? good crying or bad crying? or both?” her eyebrows go up slightly and she searches the other’s face carefully- she’s never been the best with social cues, “everything ok?” she’s been asking people that question a lot lately it seems- maybe she’s projecting? she doesn't want to think about it too hard. she lets out  laugh, shaking her head in amusement, “well, thanks. but i’d say probably not. you know how i am when it comes to flirting.” words like hopeless and awkward came to mind, “so i guess more along the lines of ‘some ‘bullshit,’ but mostly the same old bullshit, you know? reading too much about cryptids, pining from afar. all the fun things.”

the blonde grins, mostly just happy that kat had agreed. there weren't many people that she thought would accompanying her on such a ‘crazy’ adventure. but she could always count on the other for some fun. it was nice. comforting. she especially needed fun lately, “and, anyway, i’ve done enough research that i’m pretty sure i could help us escape a bigfoot’s clutches. i have never used the skill in practice... but it shouldn't be that hard to translate into real life, right?” a mischievous look crosses her features, “well, i was hoping, like, now?”

𝖎𝖎  —  IT’S   OKAY   IF   ITS   NOT   FINE         .  he’d  heard  that  probably  two  hundred  times  in  the  last  eight  months  and  he  was  almost  sick  of  it .  too  many  people  had  said  that  about  his  mom  passing  and  he  was  sure  he  was  gonna  explode  on  one  of  them .  except  here   &   now  it  felt  different .  this  was  about  leo .  this  time ,  his  set  back  wasn’t  loosing  his  mother .  and  this  was  alma  ––  someone  he  never  ever  thought  he’d  have  to  speak  more  than  five  words  too .  it  felt  weird  and  strange  and  sisterly  &   damn  he  was  sure  he  was  feeling  things .        ❛   i  just  feel  stupid .   ❜        he  glanced  over  at  her  ––  the  word  family  triggering  a  gentle  reaction  out  of  him .        ❛   you  honestly  think  i’m  family ?   ❜  

“you’re not stupid. it’s human.” alma shrugged. everyone had fallen in love with someone they maybe shouldn't have- i mean, she was in love with one of her best friends and couldn't feel more stupid about it, so she sort of understood. as he continued, the blonde’s face fell slightly. she couldn’t imagine how he felt, having to join them in their house, having to try and figure out what this new life looked like, figuring out where he fit in a family that barely knew he existed just months ago. alma nodded, “of course. you’re my brother. i know everything is... messed up. but, still, i... i want you to know that i care about you. i want to try and be a good sister to you- which, i don’t even know if you want that and i would totally understand if you didn’t. but, either way, you’re my brother, syd, and you’re important to me.” she murmured, chewing at her bottom lip.

“If our chosen careers don’t work out for us, maybe we should open our own dessert bar. We’re clearly the authorities on it.” Despite how stupid the idea was, playing pretend for a minute brought a smile to her face. Owning some cute little dessert bar with her sister seemed like a dream - especially if they happened to get to sample the menu before it was finalised. “A shrine huh? Not so sure you should want that, our parents may dig out the embarrassing childhood photos to hang in your room if it was a shrine and those… Are best kept in some box hidden far away from where anyone could stumble upon it.” Not that she was ever too bothered about embarrassing pictures becoming public. Growing up with people taking pictures of her made her immune to it, which helped explain why her social medias were now filled with dumb photos she held no embarrassment about posting. “Thank you! I like to think I’m a genius, though… I think I only get that label if he actually agrees to go, and doesn’t just ask for a plane ticket somewhere by himself. I’d feel awful asking him to pay for it though… Gotta ask now, have you got anything amazing planned for summer?”

“Ours would be the best in Ashcroft- no, in the country!” Alma exclaimed, throwing her hands out dramatically, “We’d be rich.” She paused, “Well, we already are, but you get what I’m saying. We’d make a killing.” She grinned, “Well, at least we were cute- mostly. Seventh grade a dark time. I was too tall and too awkward- the perfect picture of grace. But, no, you’re right those pictures can stay hidden forever and ever.” Of course, they had lived their lives under a comer lens, every awkward stage, every fault. They were used to it. But it didn’t make seventh grade Alma any less embarrassing. Alma nodded at her sister, “Yeah... I’d like to hope he’d say yes, but I don't know. I wouldn't want to pressure him, you know what I mean?” She shrugged, “Dad can afford it.” And it’s not like he didn't owe them. What could she say? She was still bitter- she wasn't sure when she’d stop being bitter, “The usual. Looking around for cryptids, hanging out with Nora and Kat and everyone. Nothing super amazing, I guess. I just want to relax. I think I need it after this year.”

alma’s first instinct when she sees lisa isn’t to duck behind the nearest tree or run away- which for a lot of people, may be the first reaction upon seeing your ex. but, she and lisa aren't like that. their breakup wasn't nasty or bad and alma only wants good things for the other. genuinely. they just... didn't work out. so, when she sees her, the blonde gives her a lopsided, only slightly nervous smile and says, “lisa... hey.” she shoves her hands in the pockets of her sweatshirt, “how’ve you been? you look, uh, you look really good.” that’s what you said to exes you liked, right?

      “   I  TRY,   ”   SHE  FLIPPED  HER  hair  smugly,  a  small  laugh  spilling  from  her  lips  at  the  mention  of  her  being  a  genius.  it  was  something  she’d  heard  over  a  thousand  times  before,  but  when  it  came  from  alma  specifically   (   even  though  it  was  meant  as  a  joke,   )   there  was  no  doubting  she  had  felt  butterflies.  she  arched  an  eyebrow  at  the  idea  of  getting  married.  with  everything  going  on  in  her  life,  a  relationship,  let  alone  a  marriage,  seemed  almost  impossible  to  nora.   “   whe  —  if  we  do  get  married,  then  you  gotta  take  my  last  name  ‘cause  i  think  my  parents  would  rather  die  than  let  me  give  up  being  a  hammond.   ”

“i mean, at least one of us has to be smart. so thank god for you.” alma replied, an amused grin on her face. as the other continued, the blonde laughed, “alma joy hammond. hm. yeah, that flows. so, we’re good.” she couldn't deny that even the thought of that being her name sent a shockwave of emotion through her, “that wedding... it would be huge. our parents would freak the hell out.” she shook her head, “i don’t know if ashcroft could handle that insanity. it would be the event of the century. or we could just elope and really make everyone mad.”

‘ honestly ? ’ dylan grinned at the thought of it. a lockhart becoming a stripper — it could make headlines. ‘ why not ? the really good strippers are probably like, so ripped. ’ she said with a laugh. ‘ that’s genius. ’ dylan smiled coyly — most of their ghost hunting was, admittedly, pretty amateur. neither of them had the right equipment, and half the time one of them thought they heard something it was probably just hearing the other. ‘ i could probably just ask my dad to buy one, except i don’t really know how he feels about ghost hunting. ’

“but, like, you probably have to be a good dancer to be a stripper, right? that would be the one flaw.” there would be many flaws to that plan, but, whatever, “i’ve never been called a genius before, i feel honored.” alma laughed. then she grinned excitedly, “you really think he would? that would be sick!” the thought of julian sinclair purchasing ghost hunting equipment was very entertaining to her, “maybe just... ask for money for an undisclosed object then? or, like, food?” she asked, mind racing with ideas.

since he had nothing better to do, noah was practicing basketball in his driveway. he wasn’t- well, good. he was at least three inches shorter than anybody else on the team, and his work ethic wasn’t winning. still: the way the ball bounced off the backboard and hit him straight in the face? that was new. “ow, fuck!” he exclaimed, right before he realized that someone was on the sidewalk, and had definitely just seen that. “i’m- i’m not normally this bad. seriously,” he promised.

alma glanced up, quirking an eyebrow as she heard the boy shout. she turned to look at him, chuckling, “you got hit in the face, i’d say that’s a pretty good reason to say it.” she shrugged, “plus, i’m a lot of things, but i’m not a snitch.” plus, the only chandler she regularly spoke to was eli, and she was pretty sure he wouldn’t mind his brother’s language choice- just a hunch, “is your face ok, though?” most importantly.

alma tilted her head to the side, shrugging, “it’s ok if it’s not fine.” she chewed at her bottom lip for a moment, she usually just said the first thing that popped into her head, operating on impulse, but she wanted to be less abrasive about this. she swallowed, “if you’re upset then it does matter.” she paused, “and you can yell and call him a million names if you want. or you can cry if you want. literally whatever. this is a judgment free zone, promise.” the blonde let out a humorless chuckle then, “i’m a mess, i have no room to judge your reaction to a very public breakup. plus, you’re family. so you get even more leeway in the judgement department.”

They’d always had some differences in personalities, but the one thing they always seemed to agree on was dessert. Not that they ever had malicious disagreements, simply clashes in personality, which she was glad for - she couldn’t imagine fighting with her siblings. “Can they call themselves a dessert bar, if they don’t have mini cheesecakes?” She joked, scrunching up her nose. Pulling out her phone, she googled the name off the restaurant, setting it to pictures before handing the device to her sister. “I haven’t looked at the menu properly, but the pictures people posted already have me falling in love with the place.” Giggling at the comment about the rooms, she shook her head. “I’m not taking over your room, it’s your’s.” Even if Alma no longer lived at home, it was always going to be her’s, it wouldn’t feel right if it was anything else. “Sibling bonding trip?” She parroted, her tone increasing in excitement. She wasn’t sure if the others would go for it, especially Sydney, but the idea was something she loved. They did all need time to get to know Sydney, without the pressure of everything else. “Oh! What if we pass it off as a graduation trip? Lie and say we all got one, so why shouldn’t he? Because… Well… I feel bad for him. I want to make it as easy as possible for him to be around here, and who says no to a free holiday? I am trying to drag Sofia to Greece, but I could make time for both.”

“Oh, I would say a hard no. If there’s not mini cheesecake then they’ve lost all validity as a dessert bar. Truly. It’s law. We are the dessert judge, jury, and executioner.” She joked before she took Michaela’s phone, excitedly browsing the website and zooming in on pictures of beautiful desserts, “I think I see cheesecake- not all is lost!” She exclaimed dramatically. By now, she was sure her sister was used to her over-exaggerations and unnecessary dramatics. She grinned, laughing too, “Well, good, that would be soul-crushing. I want my room to be preserved as if it’s a shrine.” She wouldn't really mind if they needed her room for something, but their house was big enough that she doubted that would be necessary- there was plenty of room for a mini gym and a football memorabilia room. She nodded then, “Yeah! I think it would be fun.” She lifted an eyebrow, “Have a told you lately that you’re a genius? Because you’re a genius, Mich. That’s brilliant! And, like, I feel like Dad kinda of owes us one- and he definitely owes Syd one, so... It’s perfect. He’d probably pay for Greece too if you really want to go. Plus, it’s fun to keep your summer full. You could see a bunch of Europe this summer.”
