“I woke early so I slipped down here to read… I’m not in your spot am I?”

The beta looked like he was going to reply. Then a volleyball soared through the air, smacking Corey upside the head from the park’s sand field across the way. 

“Hey head’s-” Dare trailed off. It was already too late.

“Oh…I’m not…” Tracy started, just looking. “I’m not a bartender, or one of the waitresses. But I can, um, give it to one of the waitresses for you,” she offered. “I’m a….” she paused for a second. “I’m a dancer,” she said. Stripper was almost a better word, except she wasn’t getting fully naked. At least not yet. The most she had done was take her top off and did what a job told her to do-dance.

“Do that.” Dare said, giving the other woman a more contemplative once-over. Pretty, limited by a severe lack of appreciation of good customer service, but pretty. Maybe she was new. It wasn’t like Kai to handle sub-par employees. “Well, sweetheart, if you can’t get me a new drink, show me what you can do.”

“N-no, I don’t know who the person who hit me was… but they thought I was my brother.”

“Are you okay?” Dare asked, gently. Omegas were delicate things. Didn’t need one bursting into tears now. She offered to help keep him steady, trying to catch the scent of blood.  "Can you tell me what they looked like?”

From what Derek had heard, Dare was a party girl with not a care in the world, their paths never exactly crossing as their lives focused on very different things. After the shooting however, after seeing the desperation to find her father, the anger when she saw him hurt, he couldn’t disregard her invitation simply due to her reputation. It was why he’d answered her call, why he agreed to meet, why he was interested in what she had to say–she wasn’t as careless as she seemed. Besides, just like Dare had revealed to him then, Derek thought there was more to the shooting than someone being mad about an Omega running for Mayor.

“And what are these reasons?”

“The Navarres have been pursuing this investigation. It’ll come as no surprise that we have more incentive than most to get to the bottom of this.” Her father was expected to make a full recovery, but their Pack Alpha was out for blood, furious that her mate had been harmed. 

“Fundamentally, the attack on Ms. White makes no sense. As insulting as she was to the system, she was never a threat. Without any pack supporting her, she wouldn’t have won. There was no reason to target her, and this is more than some hate crime.”

“Dare?” Elena frowned as she sat opposite her friend at the table, genuine concern across her features. She nodded for her to carry on talking, and once she was finished, she didn’t answer at first. “And what reason do you think that? The omega was hardly irrelevant, she was one running for a position of power. What more could it possibly be?”

“She was running for mayor as much as a chimpanzee could,” Dare said pointedly. “Killing her accomplished nothing. She had no support from any local pack and the flimsiest campaign platform. She would have lost anyway. Besides... we both know there are far less messy ways to politically destroy someone. This entire ordeal reeks of foul play.”

Tracy walked out of the club, her hair still styled in curls and her makeup still on her face. Her heels clicked against Sinema’s floor as she tied the loose robe and headed towards a secluded area. It was only her second week on the job, and it was almost tiring. But it got her money, and she wouldn’t deny that it was kind of fun. She cleared her throat as she turning around, tucking hair behind her ear. “Can I help you with something?” Tracy asked as she saw a figure in the same area.

Dare was draped across a sofa booth, in a relatively quiet corner of the VIP area. Kai’s club was a sanctuary, a place she knew prying eyes wouldn’t dare disturb her, but it was connected enough to the pulse of the city that Dare could let herself drift without losing herself completely. 

“A refill,” she ordered, holding up her glass for another whiskey sour, head tilted back, just enough to make scrutinizing the omega even easier. “Wat kind of entertainment are you?”

“I appreciate that you were willing to meet with me on such short notice, and I understand this isn’t the sort of social call you’d normally get from me.” Dare said, but her smile was strained and the joke felt more perfunctory than charming. She carried herself differently, her posture more assertive, gaze steady. Her reputation had a habit of preceding her, but today, she refused to let it. “I want you to hear me out. This isn’t a matter I take lightly, and I have reason to believe that there’s more to this then the death of one irrelevant omega.”

Kai laughs and shakes her head seeing her friend pout then kiss her fingertip. “I respect you too much to tie you to me. I want someone I can control, or at the least subtly bid my will and make my pack stronger then either dispose of them or just cheat on them with a harem of betas and omegas.”

“Hm. It’s only cheating half the time if you have betas and omegas.” Dare said, mock-considering. “Oh baby, you’re ruthless, but that’s what makes you so much fun.”

“I do agree, I’m almost happy someone took out that Omega who was making a fool out of themselves. As if they were ever going to be elected.

“It’s a mockery to the entire system. She got what she deserved, but not like this. Those bastards have to be found.”

Derek looked Adair over when she didn’t answer his question, concluding she didn’t have any severe injuries, deciding to focus on what the female obviously was more preoccupied with. “Was he with you?” he asked, looking around for the pack Alpha. People were still getting out of the Center, but security was already standing by the doors, ordering everyone to get out and not allowing anyone back in. Their best bet was to look through the multitude of people standing behind the emergency vehicles that had parked at the bottom of the steps, Derek grabbing Adair by the wrist and leading her down. “Come on.”

It was hard to say who was pulling who. The closer they got to the emergency vehicles, the faster Dare was, the curves of her ears sharpening, claws twitching through the end of her hands. By the time she spotted her father’s security team, he was being wheeled into an ambulance on a stretcher. Someone must have already alerted the Navarre Pack Alpha about her mate’s injury.

It hadn’t been a direct attack, just a dangerous encounter with a stray silver bullet, but the ambulance was already preparing to drive away. Time was of the essence. Dare watched them go, he features ashen and heart beating too loud. She felt far too cold.

“The omega’s dead, isn’t she?” She asked slowly, trying to focus on the chatter around them, ignoring how her own pulse was threatening to drown it out. “This is all because of her.”

“I wasn’t here, so I’ll have to take your word for it.” She shrugged, though it would’ve put her name on the map had she actually been able to tame the omega in question. “Still, at least now I can prevent it ever happening again.”

“A socially aware woman is so hot.” Dare said, wraggling her eyebrows before she linked her arm with Elena. “Come on, let me take you out of this dreary place, and show you around. I might even drive by the omega clinic for shits and giggles.”

“So the only person we lost was an Omega?” He upped his brows. “I get there important an all but there shouldn’t have even been an Omega running to become mayor. What a joke.”

“That wasn’t a loss.” Dare sneered, feeling more vindictive than usual. “The people who were hurt in the attack were a loss.” Omegas weren’t people.

“Omega’s these days are just so insufferable, you’d think they’d know better than to run off with an Alphas child.”

“What?! Are you serious?” Dare asked, utterly horrified. It wasn’t that she didn’t believe Dimitri, rather she didn’t believe someone could be so cruel. “What happened?!”

Wrapping his arms around her waist, Otto hugged Dare back. He always wondered if maybe his vies came to light, if she would be the one to drag him off to some reform camp. Its not like he had any family that would and Isaac wouldn’t. For now he pushed the thought aside and nodded. “I missed you too, Dare. You and Isaac are pretty much why I came back.” Ottto admitted as he took his friends hand once they parted.

“Well, you’re stuck with us.” She said, bumping against him as she pulled away. Hopefully that would be enough for now.

Isaac let out a slow breath and set his arm over Dare’s shoulders, pulling her into his side amiably.  “Yeah, and vice versa.”  He grinned at Dare’s declaration, perfectly willing to go along with it.  “Sure, whatever you want, Dare.”
