@alqu
Can we please please normalize subtitles?
Subtitles are:
1. A necessity for deaf people
2. REALLY helpful for those who are partially deaf, have APD (like me and my sister) or any other hearing problem
3. really helpful for those who can’t focus well, especially for those with ADD/ADHD (like me)
4. Is incredibly helpful for people learning a second language, or for bilingual people who can read better than they can hear
5. Even if you aren’t into learning the language, there are countless amazing foreign movies and songs you really can’t enjoy without subtitles!
6. Can help people (like my sister) who have reading comprehension
7. Can help when you’re having a party and you don’t want to pause every time someone wants to make a comment/joke
8. Can help when the characters in the show have a heavy accent (especially in period shows)
9. Let’s be honest subtitles can really add to the humor of the show! (”sobs mathematically”, “screeches loudly”, “angrily fixes bowtie”)
10. Can let people watch content without headphones, or in areas of loud noises.
11. Alternatively, If someone has sensitive hearing or is triggered by loud noises, they can turn the volume down low and still be able to enjoy the content
12. The last bit is VERY true for movies where they switch between soft speaking and LOUD BOOMING NOISES (I’m looking at you hunger games)
13. Very good for helping young kids recognize and associate words and learn to read faster!
14. Really good when you’re eating chips/crunchy candy and can’t hear the movie
15. IS A NECESSITY FOR DEAF PEOPLE!!!
I can’t even tell you how many of my friends made fun of me for needing subtitles, to the point of where I just don’t bother with them anymore. Asking for subtitles at an event is the scariest thing I can imagine. People often complain that it “gets in the way” of their movie. Watching shows (especially in loud areas or with people who talk a lot) is incredibly frustrating for me. People often think I’m stupid for not understanding a show or needing to rewind when someone talks. Most Youtube users don’t bother to create subtitles for their videos (and auto-generated subtitles are crap). I just wish people were nicer to people who need subtitles, and that they were more accessible on other platforms.
My mom is unilaterally deaf, but we’ve used subtitles since long before any hearing problems occurred. Sometimes the dialog-to-music ratio is off as fuck in the master, and subtitles help to balance that.
subtitles are also super helpful for autistic people! i have auditory processing disorder, so sometimes it’s like i hear everything a second or two after it’s said. subtitles are very helpful so i can read the dialogue while my ears catch up

nobody ever talks about how saying non-binary genders don’t exist is racist as fuck
How?
many many many indigenous cultures have historically included more than two genders and to say that those genders do not exist is to say that those cultural traditions are invalid, and that only the imperialist gender binary is correct. which is racism.

WESTERN
THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF CULTURES ACROSS THE WORLD WHO SEE GENDER AS A SPECTRUM OR OTHER FORM OUTSIDE OF TWO GENDERS

You’re in charge of assigning every child on Earth the monster under their bed. One child in particular has caused every monster assigned to him/her to quit. You decide to assign yourself.
Case: #273402 Status: Disastrous.
I stare at the file and realize I have no options, over the last 2 years every monster assigned to Charlotte Dower has quit, every last one. Her first monster; a giant goldfish-faced humanoid named Bubba, had been with her for four years, and then she wasn’t scared of him anymore. After that it was a string of different common, uncommon, and rare monsters… I even assigned a sentient sock monster to her. He came back crying! I look on my tablet, only one assignable monster left; myself. Field work has never been my cup of tea, but desperate times call for desperate measures. So at 8:03 pm, after Mrs. Gideon tucks in Charlotte and her little brother Daniel; I slither into the space beneath Charlotte’s bed. Across the room underneath Daniel’s crib is a rookie, Chico, a standard Creep kind of monster. I turn my attention to the bed above me, Charlotte is still awake but barely, I reach up over the bed and run an ice cold finger over her cheek, silence, so I do it again. “I’m not afraid of you monster!” She whispers, but her voice is shaking. I can see a small clock on the wall 8:14, a door somewhere in the house slams and there is an audible hitch of breath from above me. A few minutes go by I can hear Francis Gideon yelling at his wife. There are heavy footsteps on the stairs, and loud panting breaths, Charlotte scrambles off the bed and… She. CRAWLS. Under. The. Bed. With. Me. “Move. Over!” Charlotte hisses at me. I do. The door to the bedroom slams open and I smell the stench of human intoxicants before the man even steps inside. I know why Charlotte isn’t afraid of any of my monsters; she’s afraid of her own. Francis reaches a hand under the bed and I thrust my wrist into it, he starts to pull, I slither out. “What the…” I cut Francis’s next words off by unfolding to my full 12 foot height. Looming over the drunken man I caress my cold fingers down his face. “If you ever touch, scare, or harm my child again, I will find you, and I will do the same to you, for all eternity.” I promise to him. As Francis runs from the room he soils himself. I pull Charlotte from under the bed, tuck her back under her covers and kiss her forehead goodnight. “I’ll be back tomorrow night, sleep well darling.” Charlotte Dower is my child, I am the monster under her bed.
WELL GODAMN, WE HAVE OURSELVES A WINNER

People pretending to have disabilities they don’t is infuriating. I get that.
But stop with this “kids on this site are claiming to have mental illnesses which they clearly don’t and were never diagnosed as and are romanticizing it”
Yes, there are a lot of people under age on this website, especially teenagers, and statistically a huge percentage of them actually do have some sort of disability. It is strange to see so many people openly talking about having mental illness but that’s because the culture of this website is a relatively “safe space” for that. If it seems like there are overwhelmingly an unrealistic number of disabled people on this website you should consider this as the equivalent of the experiments that put binary people in a group and ask which gender is the minority.
Unless women were a very small percentage of the group both men and women perceive that the group was mostly made of women. When you never see people represented, a few of them standing together tends to seem like a pretty big deal.
And the reason we call “mentally ill” people “neurological divergent” is because mental illnesses are just a way to categorize different forms of neurological structures and performances.
You know who is really neurologically fucked up? People going through puberty.
It is incredibly hard to diagnose someone under the age of 25 correctly with a mental illness because their brain is still growing and their neurology is constantly changing. So-called symptoms are never the same across the board because these classifications/diagnosis are still a very faulty system and relatively new. No doctor could accurately confirm or deny someone’s diagnosis over some of their blog posts so you certainly can’t.
This website is also overwhelmingly female; even women with a very clear cut disabilities, even physical, have an extremely hard time getting diagnosed at all. Studies are always done on men, cis women involved in studies are documented during the point in their menstrual cycle where they are the most neurologically similar to cis men. Women are conditioned from a very young age to hide things we would consider symptoms of mental illness. Feminine traits and symptoms of mental illness often overlap, mostly because most diagnosis processes are still antiquated.
You know who has an even harder time getting diagnosed? People of color.
So unless someone asks, keep your opinion about their brains to yourself.
