Just so we're all on the same page with the writer's strike.
If during the strike, it's announced about AI generated shows. We are not watching them. Not even out of curiosity. Let them fail every AI generated show they try make.
The human voice can not be replaced by AI. Don't let them try.
This isn't likely to happen, but the threat of it will, and it's important to know the difference.
The studios can't make an "AI-Written" show without a human writer. This isn't because Chat-GPT isn't ready for a Sunday school play much less Prime Time, though that is true. This is because AI-generated content is public domain until modified, and under the US Copyright Office's current standards, modified very substantially.
Modifying raw output sufficiently to be copyrightable would require a writer, and the writers are on strike, so somebody's crossing that picket line if they do that. Without that kind of heavy rewriting, the studios wouldn't own the scripts of the material they were putting out, and their entire business model is built on IP monopolies even when such monopoly isn't required for their success.
The studios are going to threaten both the workers and the audiences with AI-generated scripts, but that threat has no teeth, because they were already planning it and that's a big part of why the strike happened.
The studios have dreams of AI-genned scripts being rewritten for pennies by temporary contract writers. This isn't a new impulse. Reality TV was a prototype, the constant farming of social media for unpaid content is another.
AI is a tool, and advancements in tool technology should benefit workers, not exploit them. If a writer wants to use an AI tool for part of their process, I have no problem with that. But a studio wants to use an AI to generate base concepts so no writer(s) are the "Creator" (in the "created by" in the credits sense) and then underpay freelancers to make the stuff tolerable? That's right out, in the same way using unpaid interns to generate the same material would be.
Sorry but this is hilarious
