✨ our man luke alvez for the character game thingy?? ✨
I fell in love with him IMMEDIATELY. Like record scratch, needle drop, the whole bar goes silent and you hear a pin drop, head turning WHO IS THAAAAAAAAAT. I already knew who Adam Rodriguez was so like I do admit I was already primed to like Luke, but he was just so likeable. He had a bit of that dark past going on with his Ooh I'm Mr Fugitive Hunter I Live For The Chase thing, but he was so silly and goofy at the same time. And of course his off the charts chemistry with Penelope and the way they interacted, I was like. This guy is a fucking KEEPER. I literally loved every second he was on screen and I felt like he brought a fresh new energy to the show.
STILL IN LOVE WITH HIM. He's been a semi-ignored character over the years so while we haven't gotten to know as much about Luke as other characters, we've gotten to know some. We've gotten to see how loyal and protective he is, we've gotten to hear some of his past and have found out that his fun and silly exterior is so hard-won after all he's seen and done in his time in the military. He was suicidal and depressed and now he has something to live for. He's just the most wonderful man. Like. When you think of a perfect man, it's him, it's Luke. He would do ANYTHING for the ones he cares about. He believes in justice but he also knows that sometimes you have to make justice happen. He works within the system because he wants it to be better, but he also knows the system fails a lot of the time. He has seen the worst of humanity so he is committed to preventing more harm coming to others as much as he can. He is an extremely skilled profiler, but he downplays it because he doesn't like to toot his own horn. In fact he routinely props up his coworkers and highlights their successes over his own, to the point where he gives others credit and himself none even though he should take some credit. He has ZERO ego. He only cares about other people. He is kind, he is soft and gentle with victims and people he cares about, but he has zero empathy for anyone who would hurt anyone else. But even with that, he understands when Penelope does, because he knows her nature. He knows PEOPLE. And that is one of his biggest strengths. UGHHH I LOVE HIMMM.
The scene where he said goodbye to Roxy was so, so incredible. I was crying like a baby. As of right now it's definitely become my favorite. I'll always have a soft spot for when he let Mr Scratch fall to his death, however. Kill that asshole, please and thank youuu. And also when he brought Penelope the squeaky cat - he has so many moments where he does stuff for Penelope but something about that moment in particular is such a favorite of mine. Because I just imagine him thinking about her, sad back at the BAU, and he goes into this random store to look for something to cheer her up and he finds this kitty and you know he squeezed it and it squeaked and he laughed while he did it, just imagining how it might light up her face.
Oh I have SO MANY ideas for stories hahaha. Some of them even partially written! Though they tend to be Garvez rather than Luke-focused because romance is my preferred subject. Mentioning Mr Scratch reminded me I have an AU fic where he kidnapped Luke instead of Emily 👀 I should finish that some day.
Luke is NOT a Derek clone, nor is the Luke/Penelope dynamic a "poor copy" or whatever of the Derek/Penelope dynamic. Luke and Derek have very different personalities, backgrounds, and character traits. The only thing that is similar is they are both tall buff dudes that handle a lot of the physical stuff on the team. (The fact that people think they are so similar based on this alone makes me wonder just how much they are actually paying attention to the characters.) And Garvez and Morcia could not be more different in how they are portrayed or handled. It's night and day.
GARVEZ. I can't even talk about it I'll explode. It actually changed the way I watch/enjoy/interact with the show. If you go back and look at my CM posts as I watched the show, before s12 I only made a handful of posts. I just counted.. season 1-11 I made 17 posts about CM. That's it. Once I hit s12e01, my posting took off like a rocket and it's largely due to Garvez.
Luke took women's studies classes in college :) I think he is a secret giant egghead and he loved college and also he loves women so taking women's studies classes was natural for him. My evidence: that time he dropped some knowledge about Native American women knowing how to 'get information' out of prisoners.
