Now that I’ve calmed down, I wanted to add something more to the discussion about the most recent chapter, and how it affected both Kaneki and Touka. 

I will go over both positive and negative reactions, and try to dig deeper and understand what ishida meant to portray with ch 125. So bear with me, and if you can’t be mature about it, please stay clear of my askbox. I don’t need your input. 

So, first of all let me start by saying something that’s surely going to piss off someone: TG isn’t about romance, it’s about the relationships you form with other people that shape you into the person you are. 

“Human relationship are chemical reactions. If you have a reaction, then you can never return to your previous state of being.“ 

This is particularly true for someone like Kaneki, whose most prominent feature is empathy. Once he empathizes with someone, he changes his behaviour accordingly. 

What I mean to say is, if you read the chapter through the lenses of romance, you’ll miss a lot of what Ishida meant to portray here. First of all, it was never a competition between Touka and Hide. It’s not about who Kaneki has feelings for. it’s about how he’s been influenced by these bonds. Let’s start by analising his relationship with Hide. Before Touka confessed her feelings to Kaneki, he only ever had one example of unconditional love, and that came from Hide. Though in Hide’s case it had never been addressed as romantic attraction, Hide’s friendship was very important to Kaneki, who up until he met him had never experienced a form of love which didn’t come with abuse. Hide’s friendship is important to Kaneki because Hide sees value in Kaneki’s life:

And this is important because Kaneki had driven that point home. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. 

this was said by the hallucination of Hide in Kaneki’s mind during the fight in Cochlea. It was all the more powerful because it came from Kaneki’s own mind. As a result, Kaneki subconsciously started putting Hide on a pedestal and his depression and lack of purpose in life made him even go as far as trying to emulate him through seeking an heroic death that would paint him as someone worth loving. Rescuing Hinami from Cochlea was his way to “go out with a bang”. He never meant to get out of it alive. 

Needless to say, this attitude of idolizing someone is, of course, unhealthy.

Now let’s see the relationship with Touka Kaneki has always had a soft spot for Touka. Even before he became Haise and made it explicit, he already had romantic feelings for her. You can see that in how he always treated her differently than the rest of his crew: he always left her behind and encouraged her to keep away from harm’s way. During the recent talk, he confessed that all along he was scared that she would go up and die somewhere without his knowledge, which was something he selfishly couldn’t bear. 

That’s where it becomes interesting: up until Touka confesses the very same thing about him, Kaneki didn’t even realize that his feelings for her were requited. This, paired with the newfound knowledge that his selfish behaviour has only hurt Touka more, culminated with character growth: here he asked Touka to stay at his side. That’s the important shift: for the very first time after he lost Hide, he finally realized that someone else loves him. Here, for the first time in a long while, he can find meaning in life instead of in death.  

Here’s what bothers me, though. Please bear with me a little longer. 

In her haste to keep true to her words to prevent him from pursuing death, imho Touka actually miscommunicated something very important. I personally get the vibe that instead of telling him “you need to live on for yourself because your life has meaning”, which is what you should tell a suicidal person, the message she let through was “you need to live on for me because I love you and I care about you.” Which is codependence on both sides. In other words, this chapter was a step forward because Kaneki got past his suicidal ideation, and two steps back because he went back to putting people on pedestals and living on for other people’s sake. Replacing a bad coping method with another. The good news about this is that he doesn’t seem to be actively seeking suicide yet, but the bad news is that now his happiness resides in Touka’s hands. Which, per se, wouldn’t be a bad thing if they weren’t so codependent. But if Touka (or her possible babies) were to get hurt (which is a given both for her recent cover art and for the birthday poem: see here and here), he would go back to blaming himself. 

Now, I wanted to make clear that, given how they made love before talking at length about their feelings and before a proper character develpment, this chapter wasn’t bad writing per se. It’s nothing different from what Kaneki and Touka did all their life. I even understand why they did it. I cannot blame Touka for trying her best to keep Kaneki from leaving her after she lost a great majority of her family, and I cannot blame Kaneki for not knowing what’s good for him after a lifetime of self-loathing or for not knowing how not to rush into a relationship after he basically had no healthy role models in his formative years. 

What’s really bad is romanticising this kind of dynamic. I’ve seen tons of people saying that this is character and relationship development for both of them when it’s clearly anything but. 

So, if this chapter wasn’t meant to be about a romantic subplot, what was it actually about?

Emotional vulnerability. 

Yes, that’s it. It’s that simple. That’s the real huge step forward. Not admitting their feelings for each other, because we didn’t need a sex scene to know that they loved each other. They already admitted it right before Mutsuki barged in. 

What’s new is these three panels in particular, imho:

First, Kaneki exposing his body, a literal patchwork of his dual nature, something he’s always been very sensitive and insecure about, for someone else to see. 

Secondly, his tears. Not so long ago, Hide described Kaneki as someone not very honest with his feelings. Someone who’s used to acting when he’s around other people. Here, though, he’s not wearing any masks.

Thirdly, just look at the emotional vulnerability he displays in front of Touka. Curled up in a fetal position, he lays with his head on Touka’s lap much like a kid taking a nap on their mother’s belly would. I don’t think that the maternal aura Touka has on in that last page is just a coincidence, and I refer both to a possible hint of Kaneki finally getting past his own issues with his mother figures, and of the possible future implications for the plot that center around Touka’s womb that have been going around lately. 

So, these were my two cents. I hope I won’t prompt another ship war, because as always this is just my opinion, which is personal, and should be respected as such even if you don’t share it.

I’d like to disagree on the codependency part.

Maybe that’s the way you got it, but I honestly don’t see how confessing makes it an automatic message about how the other person should live for you. I just don’t get it.

Not to mention they have barely had the time to done any talking besides the little bit we saw - remember, they have been in the middle of a war, and their talk was interrupted too. They haven’t even touched deeper issues as this one, but Touka has noticed signs of it here and there.

And EVEN then, not only has Touka stated more than once that she’d be happy if Kaneki never returned as long as he was happy, but she still made :re in case he returned.

The way I see it, for a suicidal person any reason to live is a valid one and it’s honestly awful to tell them otherwise, even when that reason to live is a person. It only becomes toxic when they don’t seek help, which became a problem for Kaneki when it came to Hide and it will keep being a problem with Touka unless he starts seeking help.

Hide becoming his reason to live wasn’t toxic per se (nor him seeing Hide as a hero, after all some people have someone whose behaviour or morals they want to follow… or well, it wasn’t until he tried to emulate his eroic death). It only became a problem when Kaneki didn’t get help, his problematic situation only made his mental health worse, and then Hide dying because Kaneki ate him (which is assumed until Ishida says otherwise) ended up with Kaneki wanting to die, actually working towards that goal and then losing his mind while being held captive.

Point is if Kaneki doesn’t get help then it might end up the way you say it, but for now I see no codependency from each other.

Hey. I’ll try to clear up. 

First of all, they did have time to talk, if they really wanted to. Kaneki simply refused to and ran away. Touka had made it clear that she wanted a word with Kaneki during their encounter in Cochlea, but Kaneki avoided that discussion for the whole duration of the month afterwards. Even admitting that he was doing so because he didn’t have the time or presence of mind, the point still stands that he was avoiding a confrontation with Touka specifically, because even after saving Akira he literally talked to everyone else before he confronted her. 

Miscommunication is an issue between them. They just don’t know how to tiptoe around each other yet. 

Now, a lot of people have been commenting this post and saying that Touka’s miscommunication in this chapter wasn’t intentional, and that she didn’t want to suggest he lives for her sake. And I agree. Touka is bad with words, and Kaneki is even worse at reading her. 

It is true that, as you and countless others have said, that Touka was ready to wait for him at :re until the end of time if it came to it, and that she didn’t want to make Haise get back his memories. 

The point is, Kaneki doesn’t know any of that, because she never told him. We know as readers, but he doesn’t. What he does know is this:

Both scenes center around how how Touka is not okay with his suicidal intent, and how much killing himself will make Touka upset, because Touka loves him and cares about him. 

Actually, no, that’s not true, either. In the second scene, by saying that the only one okay with suicide is Kaneki, Touka was actually trying to let him realize that everyone else around him was going to be affected by it. But putting a confession immediately after, not even giving Kaneki the time to digest this before anything else, she inevitably shifted his whole focus on the confession itself, as shown by his shocked expression of understanding:

Immediately after this realization, they were interrupted by Tsukiyama’s arrival, which again didn’t give Kaneki the time to digest the full extent of what Touka said. Is it Touka’s fault that Kaneki has yet to understand that he’s loved by everyone else too? No. She tried her best. 

What happens now though is that Kaneki knows that Touka loves him. Since he loves her too, this narrative is suggesting that he’s making her his reason to live. That’s what’s been bothering me, because even though in the end this will likely keep him from seeking death, it’s still an unhealthy way to approach his emptiness. Not to mention that it’s also unhealthy because it puts a huge burden on Touka’s own shoulders; a kind of responsibility that no one should have dropped on them so lightly. Just think about it: if anything were to happen to Touka just as it did back then to Hide, history would probably repeat itself, if Kaneki doesn’t undergo a proper character development first.

Also, allow me to disagree on what you said about Hide. Kaneki wasn’t living for Hide’s sake. He was barely postponing his death until the moment he could conveniently die the same way Hide (supposedly) did, by saving someone else.

He never found a proper purpose to live in Hide. It’s actually the opposite. He was planning his suicide “in style” all along, and thought of Hide even as he was enacting that plan:

Now, I didn’t mean to be catastrophic. This was just speculating territory. It’s not written in stone that Kaneki will never find out that there is other meaning to his life than loving and being loved by Touka. It’s not written in stone that he’ll go down a path of self-destruction if Touka gets hurt, either. It’s just a prediction based on Kaneki’s history of clinging to whatever unhealthy coping method he can easily get access to. I actually support Kaneki seeking help and generally reaching out to people and abandoning his lonely hero act. Why wouldn’t I? I’m a fan of happy Kaneki :)

Hide and Saiko: The Terrorists Who Don’t Do Anything

I’ve been suspecting it for a long time, but after this chapter it’s become quite clear.

Both characters are observant of the environment around them, and driven by simple and pure emotions of love. I don’t want to understate how genuine these emotions of love are.

It’s love in both cases, that is their greatest strength and their greatest weakness.

Unconditional love

What unites Tsukiyama, Touka, and Hide as the three aces is unquestionably their love of Kaneki. I see people saying that since Touka romantically loves him and Tsukiyama was romantically obsessed with him Hide’s love must be romantic too, but I don’t actually think that’s the case, though it could be. 

The word used apparently is the same word Saiko used to refer to both Urie in 112 (I have no idea if it’s romantic or platonic there but I lean towards platonic) and Mutsuki during the Rose Arc (which I think is platonic), and the word Akira used for Takizawa and Amon at the end of the first TG (which was probably romantic for both), which means it’s completely ambiguous and could be either. 

If it does turn out to be the case that this is romantic love, I’m fine with it. I actually think it doesn’t matter whether it’s platonic or romantic, because what unites our three aces–Touka, Tsukiyama, and Hide–is that they all love Kaneki unconditionally, regardless of the form that love takes. They’ve all seen Kaneki at his worst and still love him. Maybe Hide’s love is romantic. Maybe it’s not. I don’t think it ultimately matters which form it is. 

I’m also kind of tired of this idea that platonic love is somehow less powerful or less meaningful than romantic love. It’s not. Platonic love is just as beautiful and just as capable of helping someone grow and heal. Love will save Kaneki and whether it’s romantic or platonic won’t ultimately be the difference in saving him.

After unhealthy relationship, I finally got my sunshine back

This also kind of sounds like character hate, but I’m once again going to publish the ask instead of deleting it to prove a point. Pretty much any relationship in TG would be an unhealthy relationship at this point, because these characters are jumping into relationships before they are fully formed people.

Even if Hide had suddenly appeared and started making out with Kaneki in 124+125, the resulting relationship would have been just as unhealthy because this is how Kaneki treats his relationships with all people. 

Even when Hide was Kaneki’s voice, his lone friend and connection to the world Kaneki was distant to him at almost all times. He never showed Hide when he was upset, or never confided him when he was in trouble. When Kaneki became a half ghoul, he spends the entire manga abandoning Hide rather than telling him because that abandonment was preferable because at least he was in control rather than Hide rejecting him after learning the truth in a way that he cannot control. 

Kaneki even says so himself, that his emotions towards Hide were so strong that he wasn’t able to do anything. It literally brought him to a stopping point. Kaneki wanting to see Hide so bad whenever they’re apart, but also unable to bring himself to actually face him does that exactly sound like a healthy relationship?

Any relationship with Kaneki at this point would be plagued with the same unhealthiness and communication issues. I mean look at how Kaneki is pretty content to accept Tsukiyama’s blanket forgiveness for his own actions because it’s more convenient and avoids a real confrontation. Look at how Kaneki breaks down crying and talks about his own loneliness when Akira says something as simple as “I need to figure these things out for myself and not depend on you.” This is pretty much how Kaneki acts with anybody, it’s not a Touken Specific thing. 

Avoidance and non-communication are pretty much his default settings.

To be more specific about Hide and Kaneki as well as Hide and Touka, the main reason that Kaneki is an absolute failure as a healthy pick for a relationship is because he runs almost 100% on his emotions.

It’s what makes me think he is a terrible king, can only really function as a figurehead because Kaneki doesn’t move on his own, he stands still and waits for the world to swallow him whole. If people push him he moves until he can achieve that point of being a tree with no need to grow again. And if people treat him badly he lets that pass and blames himself.

Kaneki is an emotionally unstable person who’s a foil to both Hide and Touka in different ways. This is how he approaches difficult situations:

his mother abused him and years after her death HE still thinks he is the one f*cked up

faced with the threat that if he doesn’t choose one person that will live by Yamori he freezes, both get killed and YEARS later he’s still reminiscing about this loss and can’t make his peace with it

he shuts Hide out of his life for fear of being abandoned, so does the abandoning instead

Arima treats him in this hot and cold way that is both trying to envelope him in warmth and throwing him into an icy lake and HE IS OKAY WITH IT because he’s never really felt any kind of parental love

once he remembers who he is he shuts out the Quinx squad and still hasn’t resolved anything with any of them, basically shattering a family that he wanted for most of his life after said family just experienced terrible loss

instead of facing the fact that he most likely killed his best friend, abandoned his new patchwork family, got brainwashed to act like a different person altogether…instead of moving on and trying to do better he suddenly wants to die in style because at least THEN he’s not a failure right?

He never becomes King on his own terms, he got set up by Arima and Eto and despite the fact that Kaneki hates to be in leader situations and avoids them whenever he can he just…let’s all of this happen

Touka tries to get close to him out of her own desires, wishes to help him overcome his suicidal tendencies and even though she succeeds it comes with that little bitter pill of not even having the courage to tell him about her pregnancy and Kaneki being totally oblivious to all of it because Kaneki is always wrapped up in his own problems and can’t properly deal with emotional problems of other people

Hide hides from him for YEARS, most likely because Hide is smart enough to figure out that showing your anxiety filled friend that he ate parts of your face would put him in a state of self malice so big we haven’t seen it in the series yet

To explore the relationship between Kaneki and Touka and Hide respectively, let’s look at how he acts around them first.

Hide:

despite being Hide’s best friend, Kaneki knows next to nothing about him

due to being so wrapped up in his own head he fails to see how much Hide knows

Kaneki puts Hide on a pedestal because he’s the closest thing to a family Kaneki has had for a long time, but is so emotionally scarred that he avoids him for a really long time and then, years down the line, can’t let go of his emotions concerning Hide

since Hide represents everything that Kaneki is not he clings to his persona even in his head because he can’t talk himself out of terrible thoughts, but his imagined Hide can

Touka:

while he didn’t know much about Hide, he straight up doesn’t let Touka into his personal bubble at all and can’t deal with the fact that she doesn’t sugarcoat things

he never truly resolves any issues he has with her, he skirts around the issues as much as he can and can’t understand why Touka is a person with such a rash nature, so he tries his best to avoid conflict with her

whenever Touka reaches out for him, he shuts himself away or has a meltdown and doesn’t know what to do

The thing is, Kaneki is an overly emotional person who prefers to stay out of conflict and pity himself instead of doing something about his situation. Hide, on the other hand, is a foil to him in that he acts almost exclusively based on logic, going to the point of hiding from his best friend for years. We don’t know who Hide is and we have almost no idea what his inner thoughts are, which makes him into such an unpredictable and dangerous figure as a whole. Kaneki never tried to understand Hide, Hide always did the understanding in his stead - even when it led him to most likely getting horribly maimed. But even Hide doesn’t know how to reach out to Kaneki, it takes him an entire series to do so and almost a whole series more to make himself known again.

Kaneki has such trouble dealing with Touka because she is both pushy but almost as bad as confiding in people as he is. And just like him she’s desperate in having some sort of healthy family. So she kisses him and sleeps with him and becomes pregnant, but hides it all from him out of fear of what he would do, how he would react, if it could put him into a downward spiral again or not. She’s utterly aware of his suicidal tendencies and hides the execution of her best friend from him because of it, because while Touka cares a ton about him, she’s utterly clueless in how to actually deal with these things. Touka lacks the clean analytical thinking that Hide uses, because she’s not ready to throw herself under the bus for Kaneki’s benefit, she wants to keep being with him - but that leads to her not being honest with him.

We have a main character that is a figurehead king full of anxieties and with no will in his bones to move on his own, a best friend who analyses everything and keeps himself away from him due to knowing how he ticks but doing nothing to reverse engineer Kaneki’s thinking mechanisms and a wife that loves him but selfishly prefers to hide major problems from him due to having no idea how to deal with his insecurities.

And none of that is healthy.

Both Hide and Touka love Kaneki - and Kaneki loves them both. But none of them had a heart to heart that results in them actually opening up to each other to the point that it changes them from the INSIDE. Kaneki hides from Hide that he is a ghoul, Hide hides from Kaneki that he knows this and then straight up hides from him for good. Touka hides from Kaneki that she is pregnant and that her best friend will be executed and Kaneki is completely oblivious to all of it, not to mention that he puts her on a pedestal for his reason to live. And she’s alright with suffering on her own and not knowing what to do because it keeps conflict that could harm Kaneki away from him, instead of tackling those issues together.

These guys all mean well. But they utterly suck at communication - and that is true for almost every character in Tokyo Ghoul. Just look at the Quinx squad and how their little patchwork family turned out.
