The problem with this fandom is that we are clearly spoilt for choice and that there are more incredible fictions, poems and artworks than we have time to read and appreciate. I would have liked to read so much more in October, there are three WIPs that I’m waiting to start as soon as I at least catch up completely on the ones I’m reading, and of course the WIPs that I lost track of and want to go back to, but there are so many work-free hours in a day. And yet, even with all the fictions that are still waiting for their turn to be read, I look at this list and it’s not short! Hope you find something you like among these fics, there’s really something for everyone! Short fics, long fics, happy, dark, spooky, one-shots, multichapters, series, canon compliant, canon divergent, post canon, human AUs, ghost AUs, vampire AUs, werewolf AUs… See what I meant when I said we are spoilt for choice?
If you go and read these stories, or any story, please don’t forget to leave kudos and consider letting the author know you liked their work with a comment!
As always if you want this story taken off this list, or know someone who does, please let me know, I’ll take it off no questions asked.
I’ll try and tag all the authors and poets whose tumblr I know, if you can tag someone whose username I’m missing, that would be great.
There really are some true gems in here that deserve so much more love, please please please don’t be fooled by the number of kudos and give every fiction a chance!
Most of these fictions will be added to my side blog the nice and accurate lists of di-42, witch, keep an eye out or consider following it!
And now without further ado let me tell you all about
October’s Over-Joyous Fictions
Do you Believe In Love Afterlife? By Letha. Rated E, chapters 20/40
Compelling and intriguing human/ghost AU which gets better and better with every new chapter. Aziraphale moves into his new shop with living quarters upstairs. It doesn’t take long to realise that the shop is haunted by the ghost of the previous owner. A gentle tale of two souls finding each other with great characterisation and humour. As the story develops more layers and details are added, which I won’t spoil here, but really this is a true treat that I highly recommend!
The One-Week Husband, by @missunderstoodlyrics. Rated M, chapters 10/13.
I love this fake relationship human AU so much! It’s sooo refreshing! It’s funny, it’s touching, it’s delicate, it’s joyous, it’s perfect! It’s wonderful to witness the blossoming of the bond between this version of our Ineffables, with no drama at all. Each chapter is an injection of happiness that leaves you wanting for more!
If You’ve Got To Goat, Then Goat with Style, by @beerok23. Rated E, chapters 10/16.
Sequel to The Trouble With HELL, this human AU follows our two favourite crime podcasters as they investigate another murder mystery. Incredible banter, deep feelings, suspense, the safety of an established relationship, and. So. Much. Horniness. Seriously, boys, get a room. Actually, no, don’t!
I’m so in love with this version of them!
Better The Demon You Know, by @henriettarhippo-hrh. Rated E, 93 k.
I was obsessed with this fiction from the first chapter to the last. The suspense, the excitement, the love, the desperation, all concluding in a beautiful happy ending. Canon divergent story where Crowley was assigned to earth, but Aziraphale wasn’t. When Crowley (accidentally) discorporates Sandalphon, Beelzebub decides to reward him by giving him an angel hell captured over 150 years ago. Yes, you guessed who the angel is. This fiction is dark and angsty in a way that a non-angst reader such as myself could enjoy and love: the angst isn’t in the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley, but in the circumstances that are beyond their control, and which they overcome together, their love for each other growing stronger despite everything. Highly recommend it.
In The Margins, by @thisisshiny. Rated T, 12k.
Fantastic strangers to lovers human AU! Aziraphale and Crowley start exchanging messages in the margins (or rather, on the bookmarks left in) of the books at the London Library. Each of them is intrigued and captivated by the stranger who matches him in wit, literary knowledge, and humour. Will they find the courage to meet in person?
Oh, I LOVED this story! Great characterisation and humour, all the warm, fuzzy feelings, self discovery, some vulnerability, but no angst at all. Such a comfort read!
Regrets, Choices & Other Things, by @spectrallydistracted. Rayed E, 24K.
Trigger warning: car accident mentioned. No serious lasting consequences and no graphical depiction of injuries.
Friends to lovers human AU that will warm your heart! Aziraphale and Crowley have known each for a long ti- eeerrr, since uni. All they are is co-workers, nothing more: neither of them knows anything about the other’s private life. Until Crowley is hit by a car and suffers from amnesia. In his post-accident state, Crowley seems to think things are quite different to what they are in reality. This will lead Aziraphale to question everything he’s always believed to be true.
Accidentally In Love, by SpyGlassez @wildespyder. Rated T, 196k.
Sweet and delicate human AU. The slowest burn ever! Strangers to friends to lovers, featuring ace Aziraphale and demiromantic Crowley. Aziraphale suffers from long COVID and is rather lonely. Under the advice of his only online friend he puts an ad in a magazine to try and make new friends. This is a lovely story of ordinary life and of love in many of its forms: the falling in love and the romantic pull, but also the quiet, undemanding love of being there for your partner, whether you are officially a couple or not; a story about the strength of friendship and about found and chosen family; a story of self love and self discovery. Great fiction!
The Conservatory Demon, by Minervas_Hand, wyrmst. Rated T, 12k.
What an absolute gem this fiction is! AU where Aziraphale is a human and Crowley is a ghost and where everyone is so amazingly in character! They love each other, your honour, even when their love seems utterly impossible, just like in canon they will find a way. In my comment on Ao3 I said that I loved the (just a little bit bitter-)sweet ending, but actually, scrap that. The ending is just sweet, full stop. Love breaks every barrier. Loved it! With beautiful art.
More Strong Together, by SpectrallyDistracted. Rated E, 10k.
Very romantic vampire AU story that will subvert your expectations. This delicate fic deals with loneliness and with paying the price of finding a soulmate. I love how eager and yet tender both Crowley and Aziraphale are. Very sweet happy ending!
This collection is a little side project improvised by some of the writers in Winter Omens Big Bang discord server. Find the description and the whole collection here.
The Poster, by @luinlothana. Rated T, 2k.
Aziraphale finds a flyer taped on the window of his bookshop, if you can believe it! Lovely meet-cute human AU where they both get more than what they bargained for! Great humour and characterisation!
A Glass Half Full, by @thinkinginscripts. Rated T, 3k.
This is a compelling meet-cute human AU that will have you hooked from the first line! Fantastic humour, Aziraphale has a bit of his bastardry on display and Crowley is instantly smitten, what more can you ask for? Credible and funny side characters, you say? Well, good because this fiction has got those too! All the warm feelings, highly recommend it!
SEEKING (A Way Back into Your Heart), by SpectrallyDistracted. Rated T, 3k.
Lovely and angsty human AU (with a happy ending, of course!) A sweet story of forgiveness, of overcoming one’s insecurities and taking the difficult step of truly letting the other person see us.
Therapeutic Storytelling, by @bohoteacher. Rated G, 1k.
Post season 2 fiction where Crowley and Aziraphale try to start over.
SEEKING: A Killer, by scullyphile. @brenna. Rated T, 3k.
Great ineffable wives AU where Crowley is a werewolf and Azirapahle is helping her catch a werewolf killer. Very gripping, the ending will leave you wanting for more of this universe!
The Breakup Tango, by MM2022. Rated T 888 words.
Post season 2 fiction where Aziraphale apologises to Crowley.
My own On A Date With Tom, rated T, 7k.
Lighthearted meet-cute human AU, full of banter, chaos and bickerflirting. Aziraphale takes it as a personal offence that the gorgeous red haired man who’s walking towards him is not, in fact, his date Tom.
Other one-shots and short stories:
Thoughts From The Other Head, by @savyl(Aerenii). Rated E, 1.7K.
A second chapter has been added to this hilarious crack fic, this time from Aziraphale’s cock POV. Yes, you read that right, and if you haven't read the first chapter (from Crowley’s cock POV, needless to say), do yourself a favour and go read it now. You’ll laugh so hard your jaw will hurt.
Let’s Do It, by Tigerseye67. Rated G, 610 words.
After much consideration, Aziraphale and Crowley decide to finally do it. Hilarious, non-sensical (in the best way possible) crack fic!
Dearly Beloved, by @pirate-fanatic. Rated T, 3k.
Very sweet post canon story set in a safe future. Aziraphale and Crowley go to Nina and Maggie’s wedding and start discussing the merits (Aziraphale) and faults (Crowley) of this human ritual. Will they find common ground?
Minding Your Business, by @joyandotherstories. Rated G, 1.4k.
Hilarious outsider POV where an ordinary person walks into the bookshop, sees Crowley sleeping on the ceiling and comes to the only logical conclusion. Sweet and funny, great characterisation and just a hint of deliciously BAMF Aziraphale, you know the kind: when just half a sentence he says in a certain way sends shivers through your spine.
Bonus point: amazing art by oezalet.
Midnight Ride, by Scullyphile. Rated E, 4k.
Lovely, spooky and very surreal fiction: for a moment there I thought I had stumbled into a Samuel Beckett’s play. Human AU-ish where our favourite Ineffables find each other, like in every universe. Tender and hot.
A Series Of Fortunate Mistakes, by prettybirdy979. Rated T, 3k.
In-universe story where Crowley gets kidnapped to be offered as a sacrifice to summon a demon, and Aziraphale gets to display all his protective power like BAMF he is.
Touching What’s Not Theirs, by dandyfello. Rated M, 1.1k.
Lovely post canon, established relationship fic, featuring an adorably jealous Aziraphale.
Aziraphale’s Brief History Of Time, by @naturallyteal. Rated M, 1.1k.
In a safe, happy future, Crowley and Aziraphale are enjoying the sun in their garden. Crowley teases Aziraphale asking what he would do differently if he could travel back in time. Aziraphale starts explaining why time travel is impossible. This story is sweet and so them. Their dynamics is so in character with the added bonus of them being free to be together.
Fashionably Late, by Savyl(Aerenii). Rated M, 3k.
Oh, the sweetness, charm and humour of this story! The author masterfully interweaves the tenderness and the gentle teasing of a loving established relationship with hilarity of an… unfortunate situation, entirely of Aziraphale’s own making. Post canon, safe future AU where Aziraphale wants him and Crowley to go to Nina’s fancy dress party, and he wants to go dressed as Crowley. As always with Savyl the characterisation is spot on and so are the lighthearted vibes. You read this story and think, yes, that’s how their relationship will look like once they are free.
Form Shapes Nature, by Tigerseye67. Rated G, 2k.
This was a lovely canon compliant story told in Dog’s POV, from his Hellhound hours to him jumping over the hedge in Adam’s garden. Really cute and inventive!
Worth Knowing, by Twilightcitysky. Rated M, 3k.
Aaaahhh, one of those lovely, light, invaluable post season 1 fics that we all need from time to time, just to cheer us up! Refreshing! Aziraphale wants to get to know Crowley better after the failed apocalypse, so he invites him over and tries to make him feel comfortable. I loved this story so much! So in line with the canon vibes, so in character, so fun. Absolutely fantastic.
Chaos, Or The Art Of Throwing A Halloween Party, by SexySheep. Rated G, 2k.
Aziraphale organises a Haunted Bookshop Tour for Halloween. Crowley, of course, interferes. Lovely and sweet.
Rhyme And Punishment, by 6000years, AlwaysBeMyBaby @alwaysbemybae, @on1occasionfork. Rated E.
Brilliant, hilarious and extremely hot conversation in the form of limericks between Brother Francis and Nanny Astoreth. Fantastic!
Unity Of Opposites, by @depraveddame
Pass. The. Fan. Goodness me, these fics are so, so hot. Series of E rated, 666 word count fics where Aziraphale are enemies with benefits. Each piece is a stand-alone, but if you read them all in order you’ll see the plot beyond the smut. Like I said in one of my comments, the author takes the restraints and limitations given by the 66 format and turns them into a tool to achieve porn poetry. Every line in these fics is so powerful and pregnant with meaning, emotions, desire, want, denial. The alliterations that the author brilliantly uses throughout the works further support the prose poetry vibes, giving her writing incredible elegance and grace. I am absolutely obsessed with this series and highly recommend it. I suggest you start from the first work in the series and read them as if they were chapters of a single story, but as mentioned before, each piece can definitely be read as a stand-alone.
