Sebastian Vettel Shows Up At School In Gothenburg

A long yellow carpet had been rolled out to welcome Sebastian Vettel to Samskolan in Gothenburg on Tuesday.

The four-time Formula 1 world champion was met by around 150 students from the school who took him around and showed him the work they do daily to work towards a better planet.

The visit culminated in Vettel, with "Circle of Life" from The Lion King blaring from the speakers, stepping onto a stage in the school's gymnasium to be dubbed an "environmental knight".

"Thank you so much. I feel like I belong in this school now. And thank you for having me as a guest here today and showing what you do. I have three children at home and we do a lot of crafting, so I take a lot of inspiration with me," says Vettel.

Dubbed an environmental knight

So what exactly is an environmental knight? The title was something that Catherine Nestenborg, a teacher at the school, came up with together with a colleague over ten years ago. "We thought, what can we do for the children to work with the environment? And then we came up with this. An environmental knight never misses a trash can and always dares to tell their parents," she says. The children are given ten missions to complete both at school and at home – all connected to the environment. When they have completed all ten, they are dubbed a knight and receive a medal.

Vettel: "Children understand exactly"

Since he retired from racing, Sebastian Vettel has worked to raise awareness of various types of environmental issues. He is in Sweden to receive "The Perfect World Foundation Award", an award that is presented annually in Gothenburg to individuals who have committed themselves to animals and nature. The 38-year-old is impressed by the commitment of the school students in Gothenburg. "I am very inspired by what you do and how aware you all are about the planet. I often notice when I meet children that you understand exactly what is going on. It is rather us adults who sometimes need to change ourselves and listen more to you children."
