hi not sure if you’ve been asked this before, just curious. thoughts on “a court of thorns and roses”? have you read it? what do you think about the fae aspects? asking the whole menagerie

I have never read it, none of us have, but it sounds like could be allegory for seelie and unseelie.

That's a presumption though, just based on the idea that one is definitely "pricklier" than the other. The seelie are very 'appearance oriented' in both the visual and social sense, and the other doesn't care how they look or come off as.

🍄/ 🧚‍♀️👑 I have noticed that whenever I start talking about the *technology* that we of the Tuatha de Danaan developed, every fae in the room gets quiet and doesn't respond to it as if my words were not even there. Why. I don't understand it. Technology itself is not anathema to us. How mortals use it, is. And the propagation of the idea this "great magic/tech divide" is affecting the fae here. Dagda's Cauldron and all of the Four Treasures, even Nuada's arm, is all effectively magitech. It is a human misconception that there is an inherent and cosmic divide between magick and technology.

Please. Stop it. Stop propagating this. In media and especially in games where its used as a game mechanic which propagates foolishness into a zeitgeist that is going to be hard to tear down. It actually impedes mortal discovery when you do.

And fae and faekin on this plane? Stop drinking the mortal kool-aid. PLEASE.

Please return to learning how these two work together. Do I need to re-teach this?

just think about ... how to even say ? suppose , how kossai experience and observe faerie existence in contrast to folklore and expectations - would be curious to hear thoughts from other faerie folk here too .

people tell stories about faeries and other mythfolk , and that is part of what make up folklore . even still , for various reasons faerie was not necessarily word of choice , even in english . these stories might come from particular regions , but also share aspects with neighbours , and sometimes even strangers farther away - to point that faerie can be unclear designation for those who study folklore .

as well , not all faerie kith have folkloric counterparts - whether because these folk stay hidden from humans through history , particular stories end up lost to time , humans observe but never find any way to categorise more specifically , only seem to emerge long after storytellers die down , or otherwise .

sometimes , someone is mythfolk that could easily categorise as faerie , but that individual reject place among faeries . sometimes , whether someone fall under category is just unclear , especially as words might refer to several different ideas and stories . other times , faerie might have form that resemble some other mythfolk , but those creatures largely not faeries . is aos sí faerie ? sure , until god . is mermaid faerie ? yes , and no , and sometimes in between . is dryad faerie ? probably not , until yes .

also , faeries not really geographically bound . even different otherworlds and underworlds that associate with particular earthly regions could potentially have entrances anywhere , especially as humans of those regions move around world and bring echoes of history along . even so , that is not to say that other regions simply " misidentify " faeries to be something else , or that faerie is correct universal term - those creatures and mythical peoples still very much separate .

faeries can be born - though that word choice can sometimes be can of worms too - in these worlds beneath earth , or , up on surface . as kossai experience and observe , but still would not say universal , such earth-surface faeries can form core connections to aspects from environment of birth . that is not to say inherently protector or guardian , but that might consider such to be important part of selfhood , and reflect this aspect bodily in some way .

all of this to say : fuck if even faeries know how to define faerie sometimes , ha ! still , appreciate those who read into faerie folklores - can definitely find patterns of faerie traits and what set faeries apart from humans and other creatures alike , just ... sometimes more wibbly than , say , what define humans . sometimes easier to define specific kith that fall under umbrella of faerie , but even then might just need to flip table and be done .

Fae usually only know for sure that they themselves are fae, by a spiritual energy that the fae have in common. Fae come in some common and identifiable forms but fae in general do not come in a particular form. The variety and diversity of fae have not and cannot be catalouged, and if you tried, by the time you succeeded, your catalouge would be obsolete.

The TL;DR is that if you rule out all common classifications such as humans, animals, and other things that are fae, then even if you don't recognize what it is, theres a high probability that they will be fae. We come in all kinds of forms, sometimes its a mix of forms, it is whatever nature needs us to be at the time.

Its important to stress how tied to nature, in all of its forms, we are. Some fae, like myself, allow nature to experience itself subjectively through us. Many of the shapeshifting fae experience this.

The final take for everyone who will read this is that as @courtkossai mentioned above, to actually expand on it, no fae that I know, no fae that is paying attention, would make a judgement on who is fae based on physical form alone, because we as a *kind* do not have fixed physical forms.

Instead, the fae energy is there, that is how we know and identify each other. Its sensible, detectable, even tangible in the mental and emotional sense. Your ears raise, maybe antennae twitch, you just end up feeling it and know it.

So something has been going on with me the last few .. months. A few months back I went to this thing called ShifterCon. there I learned about selkies. After I assessed the information I learned about them, I felt "selkie" fit me more than the merfox form I usually used when it was time to interact with the water spirits. Doing that connected me to more things than I thought. For a few years the Fae in my backyard have been calling me Anu. I didn't know why and I kind of ran with that because, well, they aren't using my name, this is good, right? Well after the selkie thing, something broke open with my identity and spirits were notably doing the Anu thing more often. Well about a week ago, Cernunnos comes around..

But then he like, changes the subject to, "But you will experience me, as you experience Nature." And I'm wondering what this is supposed to mean, and he expounds on this saying, "Because you are an incarna, Anu. You came from Nature to experience Nature." And while I'm processing all this surreal shit … and processing what he said means, I am like, "Why did I have to become mortal to do this? Why couldn't I have done this as my actual Fae self?" And He says, "because you cannot experience Nature when you are Nature. Because you're experiencing yourself."

I am Alynna, incarna of Anu Danaan and I come from Nature to experience Nature. I will continue to experience the form of any creature or animal or being that perks my faerie… curiousity… because it is my purpose and desire. To know what it is like, to be them. And what exactly do people mean when they say "if you leave, you cannot return"

I'm asking out of curiosity and general want to learn. :)

If you want to become fae ... Follow the Call when you hear it. Dance with us, leap into the CIrcle, and accept what is offered. Do roughly half of what "faerie etiquette" tells you not to.

If you leap into the Circle, you're going to Faerie, where times runs Different. By the time one day passes there, a year has here. In theory you can "come back" but the world won't be the same one you left. And you may still be you in some sense, but it won't be as you currently know it. You mortals believe you are so privileged as to be fixed in body and flesh, non-fungible, inalterable, like some sort of divinity, when in reality, you're as alterable as play-dough to us.

Why, may I ask, do you believe the fae "take you"? "Snatched away by the fae" seems to be a more comfortable term people use for those who simply followed us home ...

Anyone else get annoyed at faery etiquette guides like this that only cover what you don't do? I feel like it contributes to the fearmongering that elemental spirits are all jumping at the chance to scorn and enslave you and it's simply not true. What's the point of making a guide to interacting with the Fae if all you're gonna say is don't do this or this or this like okay but what do you do???

I've always had better luck with taking my cue from nature. The wind will show you where to go. The birds will guide your senses if you listen. If you see an interesting stump or tree compliment it. Most common tree spirits are close to humans and actually like to be thanked and appreciated. Listening is often more important than looking. A genuine smile goes a long way. If you get a trick played on you, laugh it off, it's all in good fun. Faeries appreciate a good sense of humour, childlike wonder, and carefree singing. Let them approach you rather than approaching them. If you close your eyes and rest for a moment, you will hear the whole forest breathe, and feel more connected to Spirit than ever. And as for what you shouldn't do, don't bring your phone! It interrupts your aura and makes you appear more threatening.

THESE are the things I had to learn on my own that have actually been helpful on my journey. I hope they help you too.

I get very irritated by these too. Especially because many of these are inaccurate, meaningless, and are basically human takes on fairy observations. Lets address each one for a moment. "Be polite but never thank them": There's some truth to this, it infers an obligation that, due to our long lives, we do not like to be attached to. "Never give them your name": That is a complex one. Names, at least true names, have power. I'm not sure why one would give it out to anyone. But most fae are not going to abuse this, but most fae also would know how to, which is something you couldn't say about humans. So the tl;dr is you really only want to share your name with fae you've come to know and trust. "Do not follow the music": Why not? Don't want to meet the fae? If there's music that is a call to join. That's for everyone, not just for other fae and animals. "Do not enter the circle": You may freely disregard this if you don't mind abandoning your humanity and this world. Just don't expect to return. Time runs differently where we're from. But this whole thing that if you go to fae making humans their slaves inferrs that we practice slavery or something, an absolutely ridiculous sentiment. At least for my part, I can't speak for all fae here but where it occurs, its pretty rare, my Court values freedom, tbh. "Do not take anything offered": This is how we express our appreciation, not through meaningless "thanks". This should maybe should say "Do not take anything you are not offered" instead? I don't know why humans think this. Now to be sure, there are instances where any of these "rules" might be valid, but they are exceptions really, and to make them "ironclad rules" is to apply a stereotype to all fae where in most cases they don't even apply and can even be offensive in and of themselves. There is one last thing that I might "warn" about, but to some, this isn't going to be a warning but instead a enticement. If you end up running off to Faerie, you're probably going to become fae eventually. We CAN do this, and we do, especially once one understands how to be one of us. So I think that all of these rules can be summed up into a much simpler one. "If you run off with the fae, expect to become fae. That is the presumption made when you go. If you go with the expection of remaining human and being able to return, you are making a colossal mistake, and once you go, its too late. But if it is your *goal* to become fae, feel free to follow the music and enter the circle. Most are happy to oblige, if ones heart truly wants it."
