it is honestly amazing how much of writing and editing is just. logistics. like... do i use a name here or a pronoun? if i move this dialogue tag to the middle of this line and break it in half, does the end of the line hit harder that way? what if i move the tag to the front? what if i remove it entirely? ...wait, whose point of view am i in; can i reasonably say this character is appalled, or must i say they look or seem or sound appalled? is this a deliberate action or a step-removed one; is her hand closing on his shoulder, or is she closing her hand on his shoulder? environment environment environment, we need to break all this dialogue up with some narration, the scene is coming untethered. what! are! they doing! with! the rest of their bodies that are not hands! fuck fuck fuck FUCK i forgot we covered this two chapters ago and now i either need to cut this whole chunk or find a reason to reprise the conversation from earlier. name or pronoun? name or pronoun? name or pronoun? move this clause around in this sentence? oh i'll add this phrase-- nope, never mind, past!me added the same phrase two lines down. okay, if i add too much environmental narration it's going to take away from this bit, but not enough and it won't feel grounded. what if i move this to its own line? where the FUCK are their hands?
The fastest way to accomplish The Project is to cease being afraid of The Project. The Project cannot maim you. The Project cannot kill you. The Project is more afraid of you than you are of it. It is okay if The Project turns out differently from how it was in your head, and it is okay if it has flaws. You are capable of engaging with The Project.
What if the children go to schools unafraid of tear gas and bullets?
What if the birds come back, and the bees are healed, and every species moves from endangered, to threatened, to thriving?
What if the rainforest ADVANCES?
What if every parking lot had solar panels? What if every structure had solar panels? What if we built climbing gyms and terraced gardens in the skeletons of old coal power plants?
What if you baked your neighbor bread, and they shared their home-grown blackberries?
What if every person who needed a home, had one? What if every person who needed healing was healed?
What if every body was treasured for what it was, not what it should be?
What if every trans child's parents attended their graduation, their wedding, their new-name-day?
What if every warehouse became a closed-circle repair station? Goods flowing out, and back, and out again? What if landfills started to SHRINK?
What if the water and air were clean? What if there was enough public transit that the cars dwindled, leaving the streets safe for kids on bikes, evening deer, midnight cats and foxes?
The condors are back. The whales are saved. The sea turtles are no longer endangered. The cranes are back. The bees are recovering. The air in LA and Tokyo and London is clean again. The aquifers in the LA Basin are refilling.
Children are kinder than previous generations. Parents are stopping the abuse cycle. Being trans and queer is more acceptable than ever on a ground level.
It's hard to see if you're young, if you don't know how to step back from social media and the news. But remember--bad news sells, and the algorithm knows despair keeps you scrolling. It's a skewed lens.
We are fighting and we are winning against this adminstration's bullying. We are coming together against the bullies and they are running away scared because they don't understand that we will do that.
People are working hard every day to find ways to make sure fewer animals get hit by cars and planes and rockets.
Maker spaces are more common than ever. Solar and wind are more common than ever. Coal plants are shutting down every day.
Unprecedented numbers of acres are being bought back or given back to their rightful stewards, and the world heals because of it. People are working hard every day to learn how to help a forest recover faster.
We are not at zero. We are at decades of effort to heal the world. We've come SO far.
In 1982 there were only 22 California Condors left in the world. In 1992, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with its public and private partners, began reintroducing captive-bred condors to the wild. In 2001 the first wild nesting occurred in Grand Canyon National Park since re-introduction. In 2002 there were only 8 pairs of wild nesting birds population-wide. In 2008, for the first time since the program began, more California condors were flying free in the wild than in captivity. Today there are nearly 500 – more than half of them flying free in Arizona, Utah, California, and Baja Mexico.
When I was born, there were no condors in the wild. I'm 37 now, and there are over 250 condors flying free.
When my mom was born in 1955, there were days when she wasn't allowed to go outside to play, because of the air pollution. When I was born, that never happened anymore.
When I was born, humpback whales were critically endangered, and people thought they were going to go extinct. Today, they've recovered to exceed their recorded numbers. Other whales too!
We fixed it.
We CAN fix it and we ARE fixing it and we DID fix it.
Since 1990 extreme poverty has decreased worldwide by over HALF.
This is not the narrative media sells us. We have access to more information about suffering now than we used to, but things are getting BETTER overall. Yeah some people are trying to undo this, but we have made SO MUCH PROGRESS. Don't give up.
Waffle, no- we do not guilt people into reblogging things. Especially not positivity. You have to accept positivity yourself, no one can demand it of you.
in 2026, remember how GOOD writing feels. remember how satsfying it is to get your characters to the point you have been dying to get to, where they will experience the love, fear, relief or whatever the feeling you want to bring to life may be. let this year be the year of writing, prgress and of satisfactory endings.
A/N Since I've been a pain in the ass regarding prompts (ok, not a pain maybe) I got prompted a bunch of words from the amazing @cinnonym here. Rules they gave me: none xD Well, any pairing and with the promise of gifting them back. So I shall do just that.
Gifting this one to @rubikanon . To the horrible pun-maker that our quartet is.
(No actual rush nor push into reading this. I just felt like it)
Set on: Because I'm me, movie, about three fourths done, when Andrea sees Miranda's mask slip
Words: 3/5
"I'm feeling (a sense of ambition)" Back in A03
The cream colored walls were supposed to create and call for the luxury the Hotel was expecting to echo back to those staying within it. The light fixtures, gold and clean accents that found their twins on the matching furniture. Impressive and far too much perhaps but a whisper of comfort that bled from money and power and Miranda found that the mix of colors, while gaudy, were enough to blur her vision if she tried just that.
She did not know for how long had she been sitting at the couch, how long her eyes had remained unfocused - and how improper that was, she knew, but she relished the power over the muscles, over her brain - and how much the burning orange of the boxes and bags of gifts and clothes she was supposed to approve or comment on had cascaded as some distant, easily disregarded noise. Her skin felt cold, dry, and everything was fuzzy as she considered the conversation she had just had; the angry words, the spitting truths that did nothing truly for what it was about to happen once the news spread. She was able to replay her own words, the way she had aimed to deal as much pain as she felt she was trying to be wounded with. Not like it landed. Not with her.
Did it?
It was all about optics as much as feelings. Feelings were true. Feelings were able to be easily misconstrued. Information was just the same. And she had known where her priorities laid way before she had gotten married. Again. She had thought he had known as much, had shared as much.
Such an idiot of a man.
Anger was an emotion Miranda found to be the simplest tool to brand anything with: it created the starting point but could never be what finished the flourish of a thought. It would give too much power to the object of the anger, of course. And power was just as important as optics were. Not feelings, of course. Feelings were private.
She heard the sound of the door of her hotel room open and close, the soft thud of a card being put away, the steps of her...Andrea
If she had come to the room it must be later than she had originally planned to be. The thought on itself did nothing to hide the fact that she had no place to hide nor run nor bark a 'come later' when later was already off the table. She knew the impression, the picture, she would create the moment the younger woman would get when seeing her.
Oh, the camera angle for a picture of her, sitting as she was, gray and white against gold and warm colors a story on itself. If she had been the one directing the whole scene she would have put a little more black in some details surrounding her perhaps. Irrelevant of course, just as the younger woman entered the room, her steps halting, her eyes widening in surprise, the whole movement of her extended arms, her shoulders, one single stop.
And Miranda knew how she was known to be self-absorbed but she had seen and appreciated how the meek secretary had grown into a more assured version of herself over the last few weeks; how that thirst to impress had transformed into something that would accompany the brunette way after she left Runway. And she would. She counted on that.
She allowed for the seconds to fall onto themselves a little, to relish in the surprise as much as she hated it, as much as she was aware of how fragile the frayed details of her appearance made her look. Time, however, for one more lesson for the woman that would eventually fly and leave. And Miranda was many things -far too many according to her soon-to-be-ex-husband- but she would never stop for the constant lesson of what someone like her was to those around her: she had worked far too much for every word of hers to be something dissimilar than a constant lesson. She had paid for it, she would see it through.
It was still not perfect. She knew that. She hated that. But it was always better to be human, right? A facsimile of it, some would write her as.
"There you are" Her throat stung, dried tears she had already shed clogging what normally would be a steady timbre, worked-in vowels and crips consonants that made everyone stop and listen. Listen to her words. Listen to her ideas. Her opinions. Her.
She allowed for the mask for fall back into place but she felt the edges of it pressing against her skin in an uncomfortable angle. She pressed on, nevertheless.
"We need to go over the seating chart for the luncheon"
She saw the transformation; worry and surprise giving away to the less concerned, softly eagerness that Miranda had known to be the normal attitude from Andrea the moment the woman was given a specific goal. She had molded that reaction out of her herself, after all.
One that was still too slow for her non-stilling thoughts and so she pressed, pushed, hoping to create thin lines, bloody lines, into Andrea's eagerness. Was that, truly, what she wanted? To make her bleed? The thought was brandished by her anger, the anger and shame of feeling inadequate, for being seen inadequate as a fashion mogul, as a mother. By others. By the twins.
By Andrea. Perhaps.
She commented on the quickness of her actions -or lack, rather, through tired movements, through eyes that did not quite still, through blotchiness and redness and a deep seated sensation that gave away power into something that felt uncomfortably raw the moment the younger woman gave her the documents, hands working through the chart, names and connections sprawled open in detailed black over white.
She did not wish for the luncheon: Mirada would gladly trade the eyes of those that would look at her -some, maybe, already knowing something, depending on the quickness of the rumors that would be confirmed soon after, some already paying for information not yet given to the press, vultures and carrion both - for a different time spent away from them all. One in where everything, every single detail, would be exactly right.
Perfection was not the lack of marred edges, it was the action of using every possible detail to twist and turn and paint a picture no one else would have been able to see prior to hands pinching and moving details until it all fit, until it all was colored with the rose-hued eyes of good-natured press.
She was still not there. A thought that formed and coiled around her as she stumbled stupidly over the seating change, as Andrea's voice broke through her thoughts: angry, rapid thoughts.
"Stephen isn't coming"
And she wished Andrea would leave it there. She hoped that the woman would see enough beyond her words, was more afraid of her, afraid enough to not comment on anything else beyond that initial recollection of details.
Andrea, however, asked.
And that was perhaps what opened the gates. A genuine question that felt so inane: there was no one to fetch at the airport tomorrow. Only ashes, maybe, of another life that was already melting away into glossy pictures sell to those willing enough to pay for them. It might have been something different; how long had it been since the last time she had had the conversations she knew she would have: with everyone, with the twins. Ah, them.
It went beyond that, of course. Knowing that there would be the glares and the glances, the comments and the whispers, the shouts from the younger members of the press months after they got to know about the scoop, trying to find a single hair out of place as investors and big names watched the numbers of the magazine fall or climb, addressing every change to a man that had never been all too present. Studiously not pressent, actually, as she had wanted it so.
He had accused her of it a few hours ago after all.
Which was true. Had been. It had been exactly planned as a failsafe. If anything went wrong. If something went wrong.
As it had.
She did not wish to explain herself further into that but she heard her voice as she filled the silence, the word 'divorce' giving away context and reason just as Andrea eyed her with worry, with empathy. She would rather have her looking differently at her, power still imposing just as she preferred others to stare. The mask was still askew, however, not perfect, and so she kept on talking, cards falling to place: She would need Leslie, and prepare the questions and answers she would get, the colors she would need to wear for her next public sightings, the way she would need to shield her daughters away before she even got to explain her side, the one that she wished to be able to give rather than the one she knew she would hold not power to.
"Snow Queen. Ice Queen" Epithets she hated but used. It was better to be known than to be silenced and silence fell around those that did not play as much by breaking the rules as they did according to them: Miranda had not reached the place she had by solely creating scathing remarks but by sheer work on what it meant for her name to be solely hers. For her surname to echo back with no added name to it.
To those not new to the industry, to those women, she knew she did not need to explain how power changed and how power made one as malleable as one was accepting over the fact that some changes, something needed to be given away. Minute details, uncomfortable truths. Feelings of not belonging to a place, a place that -if played right- would eventually turn to putty so one could create a space for themselves. Not quite breaking the mold in a way that made one unsavory to the others. But enough to be given some grace, some blindness to otherwise inane details.
Such as romantic, sexual, thirsts. Within reason. Some reason.
Such as realities the world they lived in was not kind enough to accept nor divulge without remarks attached to it.
And young Andrea, new Andrea, warm and eager and yet with so much potential Andrea, felt like a morsel that, if cracked exactly just right, would give away to something Miranda would gladly consume so.
It's about power. And optics. And rage and anger. And, so therefore, about feelings.
But feelings tend to be more convoluted than the simplest descriptors utilized in Page Six about a marriage that was a failure not necessarily due to the actions of one single person. Not like Miranda would ever explain herself in as much detail as it would require.
Yet. She might simply close the gap between herself and Andrea for one night, destroy, almost certainly, the relationship of boss-employee and let it all burn for the sake of ego. An alarming resolution if she had not considered it before the trip, truly, as a half-formed thought that was born under the logistic of corruption as much as it was about the exercise of power itself.
She wondered if Andrea would move away from her, if she would be given the opportunity of choosing the full nine-yards when it came to acting: the scorned, the contrite, the ego bruised. She wondered, no, imagined, if Andrea would give in: what that would elucidate in terms of character. Would she deepened the kiss Miranda felt in the way her hands felt uncomfortably empty? Would she accept it due to need? want? curiosity? a colder angle born of need to use as much as Miranda felt her own head ask for it?
The last option felt far too far fetched and so she chuckle as she finalized her words, as Andrea's eyes were on her: pleading and soft and warm and she chuckled a second time, laughter bubbling before breaking away in a soft sound, almost inaudible.
Easy, too easy to give in.
Shame grew from the other side of a coin that could very well be lust and Miranda found herself stumbling over words as Andrea kept on looking, one hand reaching forward, an inch, less so. Miranda saw the movement and the way the fingers spread, as if about to catch something she was not entirely sure was about to drop. She imagined those hands, grasping sheets, grasping hair. She would ravish and she would spit. She would feel desired and exactly what she...
No.
At the end if was Andy's words what made her swallow and stop:
"I'm sorry, Miranda"
A beat, then two.
"If you want me to cancel your evening, I can."
Such easiness on showing her own power, such eagerness to please, such softness that Miranda had not been able to blunt nor sharpen; morphing into something different. She had thought hers to be the only way, still thought it was for those that were within the same circles than her. But Andrea was not there, she had refused to entertain that circle, despite looking more and more similar, as if she could fit in if she do desired, with each passing day.
And, a part of Miranda, mourned the loss of another girl. If only due to the stark reminder of being a life outside paper-thin walls made of pictures that would transform the world but would also encase them inside, away, separated.
"Don't be ridiculous. Why would we do that?"
"Is there anything else I can do?"
Yes, stay
It would be an easy request, Miranda would move forward, grab Andrea by her wrist, perhaps pull her closer as she did, allow herself a moment and then another so the younger woman understood what she was about to do: give her the time to pull away, to move in closer, to play at the different options she had already laid out.
And then, the morning after...
A blank, empty space. A cold bed, a letter of resignation.
Was tagged by @shadowdianne, whomst has returned to writing this year and I’ve had the absolute privilege to share my Ghost of Yotei obsession with!
total words of fanfic published: 37,929 which is more than I assumed, but wayy less than 2024.
fandoms written for: I’ve really only ever done Mirandy properly but very late in the year Ghost of Yotei (Atsu/Oyuki) came and stole my heart.
events I participated in: None. I always think it’d be fun, but especially with my health being what it is I don’t dare to take on anything extra.
fanfic i'm proudest of: Probably Should it be this difficult? - because it’s the very first fanfic I ever started back in 2017 and which I finally finished. But all my children I’m equally proud of.
other fanworks I'm proudest of: I don’t really do fanworks outside of writing but I did make this manip for something so it’ll have to count.
events I'm looking forward to next year: As always I’ll likely observe them and think it’d be fun, but then chicken out. 😌
projects for next year: Finishing A Convenient Lie is what I hope to do. Maybe pulling out one of the many ideas we’ve worked on with @rubikanon and getting something out in the world. 👀 (Would be polite to say no pressure, rubik, buut you know me. It’s definitely pressure.)
It’s likely so far in the new year already that I won’t tag anyone, unless you wish to be tagged then I absolutely tagged you.
Usually I would just hide, but you know what. After I finish my current wip, we'll see what the future holds 💪 Maybe I'll figure out which fandom feels like home now. If All_Wrong will give me some time off from my beta-reading servitude 😝
Friends, this has been an extraordinary year for the auction. We know how and why this happened: like in early 2017, everyone is scared and upset and looking for a way to do something meaningful.
And—just like in 2017, and every year since—hundreds of us have stepped up to support our most vulnerable neighbors and the organizations working to protect them.
Except this year, we did it on a scale we've never done before.
Last year, our donation total was an incredible $67,776.28
This year's donation total...
are you ready for it....
(you're not ready for it. we weren't.)
This year's donation total is:
Yes, you're reading that right. $127,204.11
We're flummoxed too—and deeply grateful to everyone who has poured their time and effort and money and love into participating in the auction this year, and into the fanworks that will come from it.
If you're curious about how those donations were distributed across the different organizations, here is the breakdown (this breakdown doesn't include employer match donations, which is why the total is a little lower):
Bellingcat: $2,636.19
Congo Leadership Initiative: $2,842
Crips for esims for Gaza: $4,762.60
Disability Law United: $3,835.39
Environmental Integrity Project: $3,712
Fight for the Future Education Fund: $3,108
Freedom to Read Foundation: $7,139.50
Global Project Against Hate and Extremism: $6,473
Hope for Ukraine: $12,613.93
In Our Own Voice: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda: $3,626
Middle East Children's Alliance: $13,572.43
National Network to End Domestic Violence: $4,999.95
Never Again Action: $4,555
News Literacy Project: $3,745.16
Young Center for Immigrant Children’s Rights: $10,072.56
Umbrella: organizations serving vulnerable LGBTQ people
Brave Space Alliance: $2,558
Kentucky Health Justice Network Inc: $2,636
Sherlock's Homes: $7,780.77
TransFamily Support: $5,387.01
TransQueerPueblo: $2,949
Other local LGBT organizations: $10,696.71
Yes, you're reading that right again. Three orgs AND the cumulative Other local LGBT orgs broke five figures.
We're especially delighted because, for the first time, the umbrella category worked the way we've always hoped it would! As you can see above, significant numbers of people used the umbrella category as a way to connect to an organization local to them.
As we learned through people's comments on the donation form, some people donated to organizations they were already familiar with (and in some cases had already donated to, or even volunteered at); others used this as a reason to learn more about their local organization and support them.
We'll share more about the "other umbrella" donations over the next few weeks—some more detailed stats, as well as the names of some of the local orgs that people donated to—and we'll invite those of you who connected up with local orgs to share your stories. We love that so many people took this chance to support groups working in their own community, and we hope that we can keep that going next year and beyond!
And speaking of the future!
Now is a great time to follow @fth2025fanworks. We'll use that blog to share any auction fanwork that gets posted to tumblr.
We urge you to keep up with the organizations you supported this year (and the others on our list!) Follow them on social media, subscribe to their newsletters, whatever works best for you. It will enable you to keep an eye on the good work you've helped support, and to find out quickly when these orgs need some extra support, financial or otherwise.
And if you're looking out at the world and feeling the itch to do more, here are some possibilities:
Follow @fthaction, the meatspace activism wing of FTH. We relaunched this project in the weeks between the end of signups and the beginning of browsing period, sharing some reading lists, an individualized activism bingo card, and an AMA with activist and organizer Kat Calvin. (We also did a test-flight AMA with ourselves, talking about the auction.) We'll probably need some time to recover from this year's auction, but we'll be back soon with more resources to share, more AMAs, and more tools for exploring all the different forms that meaningful activism can take and for figuring out which ones are right for you.
Organize your own auction! We've put together a detailed playbook that contains that contains as much information and as many resources as we can provide for getting an auction off the ground, including detailed guides. Almost everything in the playbook is fully public; there are a few forms that are access-locked because google has stupid ideas about sharing forms, but we're happy to give you access to those, too: just drop us an email.
Over here at FTH headquarters we are all in need of a long nap. But we'll be back in a couple of weeks, as promised, to share more about the umbrella orgs and to dig back into @fthaction to see what's possible.
Looking forward to a whole bunch of new fanworks!
<3 your FTH mods
We get it it's tumblr we don't like Harry Potter anymore can you shut up now?
Maybe you already get it, but a lot of people still don't understand why we're permanently boycotting JKR. I have 3 HP fanfictions out there in the world, so I feel a duty to make sure that my position is clear. But I rarely post, and last posted about HP almost a year ago, so this ask seems kind of out of the blue. Do you see a lot of anti JKR content on your dash? If so, for your peace of mind you can try blocking related tags. May your life be filled with things that bring you joy.

We're back, folks! FTH is back for be our ninth (!) auction, and there's lots of good work to be done. (What is Fandom Trumps Hate?)
In this post you'll find the calendar for the 2025 auction, along with links to some useful information, including this year's list of supported organizations. (All of these same links can be found in our masthead, but since that's not visible on mobile we wanted to make them easy to find elsewhere.) You'll also find dates for our Crafts Bazaar. (wait, the what? Read more at our 2024 Crafts Bazaar page.)
Here is this year's list of supported organizations. We'll be posting more detailed profiles of each of them over the coming weeks. We also encourage you to look at the Auction FAQ (which has lots of useful information for people thinking about signing up as creators, as well as dedicated sections on bidding and on nonprofit orgs.) If you're raring to go, you can look at our bidding policies.
Lastly, in a couple of weeks we'll be kicking off our newly-revived offscreen activism blog @fthaction. Why not give it a follow?
FTH2025 Auction Calendar
Monday, January 20th: creator signups open for both the auction and the crafts bazaar
Sunday, February 2nd: creator signups close
Friday, February 21st: browsing period begins, crafts bazaar announcement goes live
Tuesday, February 25th, 8am ET: bidding opens
Saturday, March 1st, 8pm ET: auction bidding closes
Monday, March 10th: craft stalls close
Wednesday, March 12th: proof of donations due
Wednesday, December 31st: fanworks due
...and if you're thinking the gap between the end of signups and the beginning of browsing period looks long: we have also noticed this! In order to accommodate some back-end changes that will help the auction run more smoothly, we've given ourselves an extra week to get ourselves set up. We've also got some stuff in the works to occupy that time -- we'll say more about that when the time arrives.
Together, we're going to make sure that there is at least one (1) good thing in the world with the number 2025 attached to it.
here i thought we might delay the next chapter when my co-conspirator co-writer @allbutwrong suddenly had to go to the hospital but in fact she is braver than any U.S. marine and insisted on posting anyway

question , can we buy hp merch from resellers such as depop / mecari or is it best not to buy anything at all ?
just wondering where safe endulgance of childhood nostalgia ends and detrimental suffort of a horrible person begins !
I mean, I'm no expert, but if it helps, here's the consequences as I understand it:
If you buy secondhand stuff, like an HP shirt from a thrift store, at least JKR won't get any money for it. But if you wear it in public, be aware that it might also send a message you didn't intend. Pro-JKR people might think you're one of them, while some trans folks and allies might feel wary of you.
If you also have some clear sign of support like a trans flag tattoo, it might help, but then someone who's not super informed might think the controversy isn't so serious, because hey look there's a person who is pro trans rights and still bought HP stuff! (They won't know you didn't buy it new or how hard you thought about it.)
On the other hand, if it's something that will only ever be seen by people who already know you, like a pajama shirt, then it probably has a more neutral effect.
Does that make sense? Hope it helps you figure out where to draw the line to fit your values. If anyone else wants to weigh in please do.
“You told me that it was never meant to be,” Hermione somehow managed to shout, even as her voice kept cracking, “That it could never work. Those were your words, Narcissa.”

“So, no. You don’t get to say anything to me anymore,” Hermione added her eyes filled with tears, but also with unrelenting determination. That same determination Narcissa had been first captivated by, was now used to shatter her heart.
Please, smile at me once more. Oh, what she would not have given to see even a hint of softness in her now.
Hermione backed away from her, before tearing her eyes from Narcissa and storming out. Narcissa was left standing alone and her throat ached as she fought to keep at bay the tears her heart wanted to cry out.
Please, don’t leave me. She begged in her mind.
When a sob tried to escape she covered her mouth with her hand and only then realized how hard she was shaking. A sob, muffled by her palm, finally got out and she dropped on the couch as the tears came.
Please, come back to me. But as much as she hoped, it was never going to be.
After all, it was exactly what she deserved. Her stubbornness and arrogance had cost her the only person that could love her. For real. Not for her titles or for her social status. Just for her.
Please, let me try again.
She fell on her side, hugging a pillow and her heart ached. She closed her eyes and whispered her last plea -
