It’s interesting that so many conventionally feminine singers do this - create music videos with scantily clad women - without any real criticism from feminists (other than she’s a victim participating in patriarchy).

However, let a masculine woman do the same thing and all of the sudden feminists remember internalised misogyny. Deep down, they really believe we are men.

I think it’s important to be mindful of the fact that there’s a limit to people’s progressiveness and affectations of being pro marginalised people.

If you aren’t Nigerian, you might not (or you very well might) be aware of Sugabelly, known for being a prominent Nigerian feminist and also for supposedly being anti homophobic.

Yet because I pushed back on her concerning Tweets, the mask fell.

The purpose of sharing these tweets isn’t to attack her (I don’t know her personally). But it’s to (1) make people who might be drawn in by her no nonsense style of writing to be careful about the biases they might be dealing with; (2) to more generally illustrate the point I’ve made about how lesbians really should get out of feminist spaces, seeing as the vast majority of non lesbians hold such views about us.In fact, what she’s said is actually very mild compared to what most of them think; and (3) to showcase how interesting it is to observe how “allies” behave in relation to the demographics they claim to support—when a marginalised person dares to challenge or contradict the person from the dominant demographic, the benevolent act disappears.

I know I’ve repeated this message countless times but most other women are not our allies. Their bias against us always jumps out eventually.

Full disclosure, this debacle about lesbians supposedly being misogynists arose when a het woman made a rape joke about lesbians and the Nigerian TL was full of straight men laughing with straight women about raping lesbians and while this was happening all the feminists looked the other way. When one lesbian responded in anger, all of a sudden we became the bad guys. A few feminists even wrote think pieces on “both sides, something which no feminist would ever do if a man posted a rape joke about straight women and one woman posted an insult in response out of anger. But different rules apply to us, it seems.

This is one of the most progressive people in Nigeria, for real:

Then there’s the residual anger from when we told her that she is wrong to blame “Western style gays” for the homophobia in Nigeria because we want to live openly as opposed to hiding in heterosexual relationships for tradition’s sake.

How you be allergic to salad? it’s not a specific food. It’s not. It’s an assembly method for a lovely cold-food. It doesn’t have to have dressing. it doesn’t have to have lettuce. Shredded broccoli and cheese with herbs in a oil-and-vinegar dressing. Raisins and shredded carrots in that weird sweet dressing. Weird dry salad.

I don’t know why everyone wants to be a contrarian about this. We all know they were referring to leafy green salads, which is the most common kind of salad, and lettuce is a common trigger for several GI issues (which a friend might mislabel as “allergies”). Regardless, it is possible to be allergic to pretty much every ingredient in a salad.
