Collins is gone.

Namaygoosisagagun First Nation/Collins has burned to the ground. The entire community is nothing but ashes after being quickly consumed by wildfires. They did not have any support from emergency services, and no one offered aid. The community saved themselves by escaping into boats because no one came.

Mishkeegogamang and Cat Lake have lost power. Families are ending up in shelters with nothing. Armstrong, Lac La Croix, Whitesand, Gull Bay, Lac des Mille Lacs are currently in the fires path and all members are being evacuated.

All this loss, all this devastation, and it was entirely preventable.

After steadily underfunding wildland firefighting and purposefully excluding Indigenous wildland firefighters and Indigenous wildfire organizations from wildfire operations, firefighter training, decisionmaking, and resource exchanges, in 2025, Doug Ford slashed the forest firefighting budget.

It's hard to ignore his decision to cut funding and leave us out of adequate fire training (even though we've lived with forest fires for thousands of years—far longer than settlers have been in Canada—and made sure fires like the ones we're all seeing today were prevented through kinisitotēn) when, despite making up less than 5% of the population, we account for 42% percent of all wildfire evacuations in Canada.

And when we are successfully evacuated, we face discrimination and racism—like Kashechewan—because it's always been easier to blame us than it is to blame the true culprit: denialism, corportate greed, and colonization.

The people of Collins and every other impacted community deserve better.

Right now, the AFN is currently accepting donations to help Collins First Nation. If you're able to, please consider donating.

ONWA (Ontario Native Women's Association) is another great place to donate to. They have outreach vans going to motels and inns and offering food, water, resources, and cultural support to those impacted by the wildfires.

Caused a bit of a stir at my workplace recently. Someone said something racist on the online work noticeboard thingy, and I -- a white person -- publically called her out on it.

I've since had multiple white colleagues quietly tell me that they were glad I said something because they thought someone should, but that they werent brave enough to do it themselves. Or they've asked me if I was sure I wanted to put my own neck out like that because what if management told me off for beefing with a colleague on the workplace-wide noticeboard, or they've quietly told me that I was brave for calling it out like that. Each of them did this discretely, speaking low under their breath when no one else was around to hear the conversation.

And meanwhile, I've had multiple non-white colleagues loudly and openly thank me for speaking up. For publically calling that shit out the second I saw it. Expressing gratitude that someone had said something. And we've had robust, at-volume, in-office discussions about racism in the workplace.

But here's the thing. I wasnt brave for calling that colleague out. I dont think i deserve praise or thanks or accolades or etc. I think that by the time i saw her comment, it had been up for a while, so there SHOULD have been MULTIPLE callouts from colleagues who saw it before I did. I think that my callout should have been one of several.

But it wasnt. Because my fellow white colleagues "weren't brave enough" to publically call her out, or were too worried about repercussions to themselves if they did so, or etc.

And meanwhile there were loads of non-white colleagues seeing that comment she made, and seeing that no one had challenged it, and -- how would that have made them feel, do we think? Isolated. Ostracised. Targeted. Like that comment by that racist woman was aimed at them specifically, and no one had bothered to speak up in their defence.

So this post is a reminder to my fellow white folk.

Your silent disapproval of racism is useless. In fact -- if you only ever silently disapprove of racism, then thats actually tacit agreement with racism.

I dont give a shit how progressive you are in the privacy of your mind or in anonymous online spaces. If you're not also calling out bigoted bullshit in your real life, with your social circle or your friends or colleagues or etc, then you are tacitly supporting that bigotry with your silence.

Also: leaving non-white people to either see uncontested racism or be forced to constantly be the ones putting their own mental wellbeing on the line by challenging it is a douchebag move.

It doesnt cost you anything to publically stand up against racism. All the white colleagues who were telling me "what if you get reprimanded" reprimanded for WHAT? For calling out racism? There's absolutely no way for management to spin that in a way that ends well for them; not to mention the fact that had they tried to reprimand me, i would have dragged the racist woman who started it into the consequences pit with me, and I would have ENSURED that she face more substantial consequences than me.

And "I wasnt brave enough to speak up" --- why not? What was scary about it? Did you think you'd be ostracised by your colleagues? If theyre the type to disapprove of anti-racist behaviour then their opinion is worthless anyway and their company can be shunned.

It cost me nothing to call her shit out --- but even if it HAD, it would have been worth it regardless, because leaving racist shit to sit uncontested in public is not an option. Non-white people don't get to opt out of being involved in racist nonsense. They're involved in it whether they want to be or not. And its bad enough that they cant escape racism without also leaving them to battle it alone.

Not to MENTION that if a white racist is called out by a fellow white, it has more of an impact on them. If someone who isnt white tells a racist "Hey that was some asshole behaviour," do you think the racist is going to listen? Or do you think theyre gonna ignore that feedback because it came from someone they already disrespect? But if a WHITE PERSON says "What the fuck, that was an asshole thing to say" then its going to hit harder for coming from someone with a skin colour that the racist approves of.

So this post is a reminder to my fellow whites.

Fucking SPEAK UP. Not just online. Not just in the privacy of your own mind. Speak up with your colleagues. With your friends. With your family. Call racist bullshit out when it happens -- publically.

I was so disappointed by how many white colleagues quietly thanked me for doing what they werent brave enough to do. They all should have spoken up as well. They all should have PUBLICALLY called that racist nonsense out, instead of just quietly thanking me for doing it.

So this is me, telling you: dont be like my white colleagues.

Dont leave people of colour to fight racism by themselves with no back up.

I wrote a memoir called The Bootle Boy. It tells the story of my life, and Rupert Murdoch is one of its central characters.

Murdoch has attracted admirers and fierce critics in equal measure. I worked with him for fifty years, so I had to find a way to tell my story honestly—without being accused either of biting the hand that fed me or of seeming like a brainwashed Murdoch cultist.

Now and then, he would seem vulnerable. We were about to close the $3 billion acquisition of the Triangle publishing group, which included TV Guide, with a weekly circulation of almost 17 million. It was the biggest publishing deal in US history and a high-stress moment. We were waiting in a motel near Triangle’s HQ in Radnor, Pennsylvania. Lawyers and finance people were working the phones in an ill-lit conference room, organising the wiring of cash to the seller’s banks. Rupert was standing in the lobby with me and a couple of others, talking about what we would do when we walked into Triangle’s huge offices to take over the business. Here was the tough and invincible mogul on the brink of another mega deal. But then I saw a red smear on his fingers, staining the white handkerchief he had taken from the breast pocket of his jacket. He had picked at the cuticles of his fingernails until they were bleeding.

He could be in pain when things went wrong. During a company crisis, he had to sell a stable of magazines.

He organised a dinner for the departing executives, about 50 of them, and we sat in his office early that evening discussing what he would say to them. He wanted to be sure to have a grateful remark for every individual in the room. He put down his pen at last and looked silently across his office, in the direction of a wall of television screens.

‘I feel like I’ve let them all down,’ he said.

But he could also be tough and terrifying towards the people working for him.

I became good at providing therapy to executives and editors who suddenly felt out in the cold. Sophisticated people would come to me, wounded because ‘Rupert hasn’t called me for more than a month.’ My response was always the same: ‘Lucky you.’ He was like a visiting comet and the mysterious astronomy of Rupert made it impossible to know when he would appear and how long he would stay. In meetings, he went easy on junior people; he must have seen how terrified some were. But, with senior people who displeased him, he could be savage. I consoled over drinks more than one tearful editor. Because I have so little, and I know few people personally, and Rupert Murdoch has used his unelected, unanswerable power to do so much to undermine democracy all over the world and make life worse for people like me. At a guess, he's personally responsible for shortening my mom's life by five years with all the disinformation he's spread to help put conservatives in power - maybe she'd not have made it to 60 even without his lies, but very likely at least a little further than 52.

So, bold to take a "neutral" stance towards one of the most evil men in the world. I'm sure there are people who care about what he's like personally who might be interested.
