to people that hide contraband in their assistive devices. to people that do party tricks they arent supposed to and people who will spit on you if you ask them to do party tricks. to people that weaponise the infantalisation of disabled people for their own purposes (theft et. al.). to the people who "misuse" their medication and people who dont take it at all. to my mother, who takes out her hearing aids when she doesnt want to hear shit anymore but will still pretend to be listening so you dont catch on. to people who sleep all the time and to people with "abnormal" circadian rhythms who are unwilling to alter their sleep/wake cycle to best appeal to societal (and moral) expectations. to people that complain loudly about inaccessibility and refuse to try and "make it work". to people that charge money for invasive questions and people that pretend not to understand the question at all.

before this post breaches containment and people start going “why not both hehehe” i want you to seriously consider the very long history of disabled people’s existence being pushed aside and/or seen as secondary. i promise you it’s not going to hurt to hold onto the memes and give disabled people space for visibility and celebration.

i say this as a disabled trans person whose trans identity is made front-and-center to the (mainly cis) people who know i’m trans but my identity as a disabled person is brushed off by the very same people.

Pride Month may almost be over, which can be saddening, but please remember that July is Disability Pride!! It matters just as much and deserves more acknowledgement than it gets.

Disabled people deserve the same love and care that everybody else does. You are important and awesome. You deserve a good life and plenty of accessibility (which I'd love to see more of.)

A good chunk of friendship is just looking after someone else's good like you would your own. Like you see that the grocery store has a discount on that gross thing that Nobody Else But Your One Friend In Particular even likes, and you know that they fucking love those things, so you message them like "hey you like these things, do you want some? You can pay me back later" and they immediately send you the money like "holy shit buy all of them" because you remembered they like those things.

When I went to see my friends for the pride thing last weekend, we went out to eat before that and while we were talking about stuff while waiting for our bill, one of my friends who carries a whole medical bay in their bag took out one of those nice glass-cleaning wet wipes and started cleaning their glasses with it. Focused on the conversation I didn't pay much attention to it but the next time I looked at their direction I noticed them putting away glasses with a different glasses chain (they have like 35 of them, to match every outfit)

And I thought "hold on, how the fuck do they have the same kind of glasses chain pendants as I do? I made those out of earrings I found from goodwill!" until I realised that no wait those are my sunglasses. They just cleaned them out too since my glasses were right next to their elbow on the table and they had the glasses cleaning stuff out. Didn't ask whether I'd want them to do that as a favour, just casually took care of my shit too since it was conveniently there, just the same as they take care of their own things.

It's a simple kind of love between people and a genuine care for their well-being. You don't do these things out of obligation, you do them simply because you know it'll either help that person out, brightness their mood, or just make them happy.

There have been many times where I have extra food or groceries and supplies and such, I'll make sure one of my friends gets some. Because let's be honest, it's super hard to stay stocked in this economy so anything and everything helps. We have family dinners together sometimes and I always make sure everyone goes home with something be that part of the dish itself or supplies to make their own meals at home.

Making handmade cards and art and such with the persons favorite colors or characters, or even just to give them encouragement because you love them and want only the best. Seeing things online and sending it to them or even just looking into their interests and sharing what you found; showing them you care even about the little things.
