I have spoken before about the overwhelming costs of food and medication in Gaza. My friend Ahmed tells me that a single tablet of the medicine his injured brother needs is over €20 euros.
However, another dimension that might help you to contextualize Palestinian life is the amount of time and energy everything takes. Ahmed described for me his daily life right now. He walks 2 kilometers to get to water, then usually waits in line for over an hour for his family's turn. Sometimes there is not enough left, and after standing in line for an hour, he must walk 2 kilometers back still thirsty with nothing to show for it. It takes two days to get 2 kilos of flour, and his family often goes 4 days without eating a single piece of bread. Their hunger leaves them faint and dizzy.
At night, it gets cold. They don't have enough blankets to warm themselves. It's hard to sleep, because sometimes there are bombings, and even when a night passes in safety, they are scared knowing bombings could happen at any time. In one of these recent bombings, their tent was torn, and they haven't yet had any funds to buy nylon to patch it. In the meanwhile, reptiles and poisonous insects easily get into the tent every night.
Ahmed's fundraiser has been vetted: @gazavetters in line (#198), but his campaign has only raised €6,500 so far. He really needs support. Please help him. Every donation helps to relieve the extent of his overwhelming circumstances.
