From Philly To Detroit, a Ghetto Song Bird Flew
“As a little wing sitting in my bedroom at night in the hood I would always hear lots of yelling in the streets, random guns shots firing off, and all types of madness. So to wake up to that beautiful songbird singing outside my window, it was hope that good things do come out of the ghetto.”
Here I am. My first rock show. Staring at a pale white wall and its meeting with a stone floor. That’s when I hear it. I hear her. Her song. Her voice. She has moves like the funky 60’s and 70’s album covers. Her boots are tall and silver. They shine as loud as a strum on her guitar. On its neck, hangs a dream catcher. To awake me from this dream. Who is she? Here in this ghetto her song flows. Who is this ghetto songbird?
Well, this fab fem bird flies in from North Philly. August 24th, 2013 Ghetto SongBird and her Roxploitation band made their official Detroit debut at the 2013 Cosmic Slop Festival at Artist Village within the historic Brightmoor neighborhood. She has been taking her urban melodic tales across the country from Philly to L.A, Maryland and right here in Detroit. With her landing in our city, she brings a dynamic perspective of femininity, self awareness and urban living through her music and artistry.
“I found my MoJo in the back room of my mom's house from listening to all of her funk/rock/soul albums.”
Heavily influenced by her mom’s old funk/jazz/soul LP’s, this songbird grew passion for performing and developing her artistry. After numerous talent shows this little wing then picked up a guitar and dived into the open mic scene.
“I soon transformed into a singer/songwriter/guitarist by ear.”
Learning from musicians who’ve performed with legends such as Jimi Hendricks, Chaka Khan, Tupac and attending the Art Institute of Philadelphia, this little birdy transformed into an artist all her own.
“I write from what I see, hear, & experience. Somehow the words write themselves as the vibrations of melody forms into music off my finger tips.”
Growing up with a father practicing Islam at the time and a Christian grandmother, Ghetto SongBird received lessons and knowledge from all people, religions and cultures. She attributes this to her elevated level of consciousness within her music and herself which she strengthens through the practice of mediation. Even if only for minutes a day.
“Now being a mother it's a power that allows me to tap into my deeper self without even trying.”
A Ghetto SongBird is what she is. Ghetto SongBird is who she is. A strong black female rocker who uses her urban experience to feed her music, her knowledge to empower her spirit and mind, her talent to explore the depth of sound and her gift as a women and mother to be divine while accomplishing it all.
“I took some time off to recharge & regenerate my creative energy by simply living life. I'm so ready to travel & connect with the world through the language of rock-n-roll.”
Rock-n-Roll. Who would have known how free the black feminine spirit is within Rock-n-Roll. As her guitar grows still and silent, the vibes within me become more apparent. I feel it as I breathe. It echoes in my speech. This Ghetto SongBird has sung the most beautiful song to me.
