So, in honor of the shutdown resolution, here are some increasingly concerning facts about living witu a disability in the US:
1. ACA tax credits, which allow many people to afford healthcare, are in jeopardy because of nonrenewal as part of the resolution.
2. Our cities are often unwalkable and rural areas often lack public transport, so many disabled people are unable to go to work, the store, or anywhere else outside their immediate area without driving or riding in a car with someone else.
3. We have disproportionate health outcomes and life expectancies to our health spending, and we are on track to drop to 66th in life expectancy globally by 2050, the time since 2000 to now.
4. No state in the US has a higher median wage for a person with disabilities than the living wage for a single person living alone. So, in other words, we cannot meet an able person's needs, let alone ours, anywhere in the US.
So, if anyone believes that people in the US do not need the ACA, or hiring equality (which does not exist for many reasons), or any other support given to us, we would die without them, and can barely live with them. They are not handouts for people that do not want to work, but lifelines for a fourth of the American population. Yes, over a fourth are disabled. I plan on leaving the US not because of the current political situation, the culture, or romanticization of elsewhere, but the very real chance that I could die if I didn't.
This is not my normal content, but I have been thinking of this for a while, and the shutdown resolution brought it back to my brain.
+ C is about to be the death of me because why is it so forgettable? It does something, but you do nothing with it, so it just sits there. I'm gonna fail a test not from a lack of knowledge, but a lack of additional C.
Okay, so life update: I had an endoscopy and biopsy done, and now have an extended ban on spicy food, which I am very unhappy about. I hope the results of the biopsy are fine, since they already found damage from GERD and I really don't want to have to deal with more appointments. My Calculus and Speech classes are also kicking my butt. On the bright side, I got a few scholarships sent in and found a really cool fandub! They have the most accurate Haruka I have ever heard, and she has my favourite voice in the game. One of my friends is also performing for the first time in years, and I am excited to cheer her on! Overall, it's been a time, and I can't wait for break so I can sleep well and process it.
I have a great sense of tempo, but the worst sense of time of anyone I know. I can tell you the BPM of most songs or do short tasks in the same amount of time, down to the tenths of seconds, knowing exactly how long I took, but I also think Tuesday is Thursday and forget hours in the day so frequently that it's a problem.
I hate how the Common App handles disability. They ask if you help members of your family who are disabled. They ask if you manage appointments and daily tasks. They don't ask, however, if you do those things for yourself. They don't ask about the appointments you go to or the time spent taking care of yourself or inability to do extracurriculars at your school or anything else that impacts you unless it is someone else's disability. You're evaluated the same as an able person who is given the same responsibilities but none of the inherent disadvantage unless you use your single, all-important essay to explain that, whereas they could do something infinitely more impactful and unique because the application was made by able people and for able people. My disabilities have greatly impacted my education because they limit my ability to think, my ability to move, my ability to sleep and eat, my ability to hold a job, everything about my life. My surgeries took over a year to recover from total, being bedridden for weeks at a time. But none of that matters because I want to apply for college. Because I want qualifications for the few jobs I can work and a way into a country where I won't likely end up destitute from medical debt or illness. I never recieved assistance from any of my family when recovering from surgery. I had to do everything myself, still unable to put any weight on one leg for six months at a time, which took most of my day. I fell behind in my classes because of neglect, not choice, and I have to write about that because there is quite literally no other option to explain why I'm not as good as my able peers so that I can take the chance at living life safely.
There's nothing quite like cramming two chapters of math before a test because you procrastinated to avoid the dread of not knowing, which, as a "gifted kid" comes whenever you don't know something. Unfortunately, the unknown is a prerequisite to learning and now you are eating almonds stressing more about your personal faults than the math itself, which is stressful enough on its own.
Crying to "No, Thank You" from K-On in the shower is a much different experience as a high school senior than it was as a middle schooler during quarantine and I think everyone needs to listen to the song and read the lyrics at least once before they graduate.
Got into an argument with my school's administration today over the way they handle senior sign outs. I'm in a state with a blanket ban on electronic devices in schools, so I just don't bring my phone to school. Don't like it much anyways. Regardless, they thought it would be a good idea to change the paper sheets into a QR code, which you need a phone to scan. So I did what any good miss anticongeniality would and told them that they did not think that through and gave alternatives, like prior notice through email or literally anything that did not require a cell phone. They looked at me like I was insane. Please tell me I'm the only one with a school administration this dense.
One infodump on a college discussion board that your classmates have to respond to a day keeps the never-ending barrage of thought at bay for maybe two minutes, but after that you're on your own kid.
I firmly believe that nothing tastes worse with a little dash of chili powder. It is easily my favourite thing in any spice cabinet, and more people should be open to it on things like fruit and sweets.
THE MIZU6 2DMV HAS BIRTHDAY IMAGERY I'M NOT CRYING YOU ARE.
(Spoilers under)
(It is genuinely so beautiful that she gets a new beginning through this event. Not only is her sister home from France, she also had the chance to help someone the way her sister helper her feel more comfortable in her identity. The niigo butterfly imagery in the cards also gives me hope that they will find some relief in the coming events, since they are all still finding their paths in life, just like Mizuki, and will emerge from their cocoons to find a world of possibilities beyond what they can see right now. This was such a simple event, but it made me cry so much. Mizuki really does get a new start to her life. The Mafuyu side story was also so heartwarming. We need more stories of Mafuyu just enjoying herself and learning from the group.)
I think I just found a new favourite song! The emotion and harmonies are what got me, but the instrumental is so well composed to complement the lyrics and create tension in the scene without being overbearing. The acting is also great, but I'm here for the song. I might watch the musical if I can find it though.
Officially an adult! This actually feels no different in the moment, but I am really proud of myself for not giving up when it felt like nothing I the world could be alright.
